Huawei Global ICT Competition: Pakistani students secure 3rd place
HYDERABAD: In a remarkable achievement for the country, a joint team of students from Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, and Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, clinched third place at the Huawei Global ICT Competition 2025, held in Shenzhen, China.
The annual event drew participation from more than 210,000 students and instructors representing over 2,000 universities and institutions across 100+ countries. After qualifying through rigorous national and regional stages, only 179 teams from 48 countries advanced to the global finals.
The Pakistani team, comprising Muhammad Ishaque from SAU's Information Technology Centre and Tahseen Ahmed from MUET, excelled in the Network Track Category. The team was mentored by Suhrab Thaheem and had earlier secured second place in the Middle East regional finals.
The final awards ceremony, held in Shenzhen, marked a moment of pride for Pakistan as Huawei officially announced the country's third-place win. The achievement highlights Pakistan's growing footprint in global ICT innovation and education.
Vice Chancellor of SAU, Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal, congratulated the students and faculty, terming the achievement a 'national honour.' He extended special appreciation to team mentor Suhrab Thaheem and Dr. Mir Sajjad Talpur, Director of the Information Technology Centre at SAU, for their leadership and support.
'This prestigious global recognition is a testament to the creativity, innovation, and technical excellence of our youth,' Dr. Siyal stated. 'As digital transformation continues to reshape the world, the demand for skilled professionals in fields such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cybersecurity is rising rapidly and our students are proving they are ready to meet that challenge.'
Dr. Siyal further emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Huawei ICT Competition in bridging the global skills gap by offering students practical training, promoting industry-academia collaboration, and fostering curriculum innovation. He noted that this accomplishment not only underscores the emerging ICT talent in Pakistan but also exemplifies the strength of inter-university cooperation in achieving global recognition.
The 9th edition of the Huawei ICT Competition also introduced new segments including the 'Women in Tech' and 'Green Development Awards,' highlighting the importance of diversity, sustainability, and inclusivity in technology-driven innovation.

Upcoming JCC session: Pakistan govt finalises CPEC deliverables after progress reviews
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal, chaired a high-level preparatory meeting of the Pakistani side of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC). The meeting convened key stakeholders, including conveners of CPEC Joint Working Groups (JWGs) and secretaries from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Communications, Maritime Affairs, Science and Technology, Railways, Commerce, and Interior, to review progress and finalise deliverables for the upcoming 14th JCC session. Iqbal conducted a comprehensive review of CPEC project status across vital sectors, including Gwadar development, industrial cooperation, science and technology, transport infrastructure, agriculture, and the blue economy. He mandated all ministries to rigorously operationalise the long-term CPEC plan by ensuring their project roadmaps are fully aligned with established sectoral priorities for effective and result-oriented implementation. JCC under CPEC to meet in June: Agri tech, energy and Gwadar projects discussed The minister instructed the Board of Investment to immediately initiate strategic outreach to 20–25 major Chinese economic zones, aiming to attract experienced companies for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) development and industrial relocation to Pakistan. Emphasising science and technology as the cornerstone of future export-led growth, he directed the Ministry of Science and Technology to study China's advancements in emerging scientific fields, formulate a national scientific development agenda, and identify 10 high-potential export products for targeted research and innovation support. Minister Iqbal underscored Gwadar's critical role as a blue economy hub, demanding accelerated development in coastal tourism, fisheries, and industry through enhanced engagement with Pakistani and Chinese business communities. He also directed officials to finalise a proposal for introducing a third-party participation mechanism under CPEC to facilitate broader infrastructure projects, for presentation and approval at the forthcoming JCC session. Concluding the meeting, Minister Iqbal reiterated CPEC's immense potential for investment, relocation, and joint ventures. He demanded unified, proactive efforts across all government institutions to deliver tangible, actionable outcomes for the JCC. He called for intensified inter-ministerial coordination and strategic planning to ensure the 14th JCC session serves as a landmark event in advancing CPEC 2.0 vision for a prosperous and connected Pakistan. The minister emphasised that CPEC phase-2 is now fully integrated into the broader national transformation vision under the Uraan Pakistan initiative. As a flagship development framework aimed at turning Pakistan into a $3 trillion economy by 2047, Uraan Pakistan provides a clear roadmap through its 5Es: Exports, E-Pakistan, Environment, Energy, and Equity. CPEC phase-2's focus on industrialisation, connectivity, science and technology, and sustainable growth directly complements these pillars. The synergies between Uraan Pakistan and CPEC will not only catalyse economic modernisation but also ensure inclusive, innovation-driven development across all regions of Pakistan. Highlighting the need to deepen business-to-business (B2B) collaboration, Minister Iqbal stressed that private sector partnerships between Pakistani and Chinese companies will be pivotal in CPEC's next phase. B2B cooperation will unlock new avenues for industrial growth, technology transfer, and job creation. It will empower local enterprises, attract FDI, boost exports, and drive innovation in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, energy, agriculture, and ICT. A thriving B2B ecosystem under CPEC phase-2 will also foster entrepreneurship, upskill the workforce, and enhance Pakistan's global competitiveness — transforming economic zones into engines of opportunity and prosperity. SAPM announces formation of APCTMA, EDB committee
ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, held a high-level meeting with the All Pakistan Ceramic Tiles Manufacturers Association Friday. The meeting was attended by representatives from 10 Pakistani manufacturers and four Chinese manufacturers. Key issues discussed included the tariff policy, customs duties, exports and imports, and the need for tariff protection for the local ceramic tiles industry. Speaking at the occasion, Haroon Akhtar Khan appreciated the role played by the tiles industry in Pakistan's industrial development. 'I am fully aware of the challenges faced by tile manufacturers and I will personally advocate for your cause,' he stated. SAPM directed the tile manufacturers to submit a detailed report outlining the specific reasons why higher protection is necessary for the industry. He further instructed that the report must quantify cost disadvantages as a percentage of total production costs. In a major development, Haroon Akhtar Khan announced the formation of a joint committee comprising members of the Tiles Manufacturers Association and the Engineering Development Board (EDB). The committee has been tasked to present a progress report by Thursday. 'The government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is committed to supporting and revitalizing the industrial sector,' SAPM emphasized. 'We are strongly defending the case for industries, including tiles, in the National Tariff Policy Board.' Haroon Akhtar reiterated his vision to see Pakistani manufacturers become regionally competitive and assured that Chinese manufacturers, as partners and friends, will continue to receive full support. 'No industry will be allowed to shut down,' he affirmed. 'Revival of industries is our vision, and we are formulating long-term policies to ensure sustainable growth.' He concluded by assuring full government support to the tile manufacturing sector and reaffirmed the government's commitment to the broader development of the local industrial base. SadaPay's Turkish owner faces money laundering probe
Listen to article Papara — a Turkish financial technology company that acquired Pakistan's leading fintech SadaPay in May 2024 — is currently under investigation by Turkish authorities for alleged involvement in money laundering, illegal betting, and other financial crimes. The company's founder and CEO, Ahmed Faruk Karsl?, has been detained along with 12 others as part of a sweeping law enforcement operation. According to a report by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Karsl? was taken into custody during coordinated early morning raids across Istanbul. Authorities have seized a wide range of assets linked to the suspected criminal network, including eight businesses under PPR Holding Inc., multiple properties, luxury vehicles, yachts, and cryptocurrency wallets. The investigation, supported by data from the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT), the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), and other regulatory bodies, revealed that Papara's platform was allegedly used to facilitate illegal financial transactions. Investigators found that 102 of the 26,012 user accounts created through Papara's technology were directly involved in high-volume illegal betting and fund transfers. These transactions were routed through 274 different bank accounts and eventually funneled into 16 cryptocurrency wallets as part of an elaborate money laundering scheme. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that 13 individuals have been detained and that assets of the companies and suspects involved have been frozen. The financial crimes unit estimates that the illicit transactions amounted to over 12.9 billion Turkish lira (approximately $330 million). Papara, which reportedly has over 21 million users and a valuation exceeding $2 billion, acquired Pakistan-based SadaPaya licensed Electronic Money Institution (EMI) regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan — exactly one year ago. However, Pakistani authorities have not yet reported any links between the Turkish investigation and SadaPay's operations in Pakistan. Industry experts believe that the developments in Turkey necessitate a careful review by Pakistani regulators. A fintech analyst Muhammad Yasir urged the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to closely monitor local fintech operators associated with foreign sponsors. "This case highlights the need for enhanced regulatory oversight and continuous due diligence," noted Yasir, adding, "While the allegations pertain to activities in Turkey, the reputational impact on SadaPay is inevitable. SBP must re-evaluate its existing EMI regulations and adopt a proactive approach to managing cross-border financial risks." He added that as financial technologies evolved and cyber-financial crimes grew increasingly sophisticated, Pakistan's regulatory framework must be regularly updated to safeguard consumer interests and the integrity of the national financial system.
