Hamas agrees to free 10 hostages alive; says war must end
CAIRO/JERUSALEM: Hamas responded to US-backed ceasefire proposals on Saturday, saying it had agreed to release 28 living and dead hostages but restating its demand for an end to the war and a withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
A separate Hamas statement said the proposal aims for a permanent ceasefire.
Israel had earlier accepted the US ceasefire proposal for Gaza, which Israeli officials familiar with the matter said would involve a 60-day pause in fighting and restore United Nations-led aid distribution to the Palestinian territory.
The Palestinian militant group said it would release 10 living hostages and hand over the bodies of 18 dead in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees held in Israeli prisons.
A Hamas official described the group's response to the proposals from US President Trump's special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff as "positive" but said it was seeking some amendments.
Arab ministers condemn 'ban' on West Bank visit
The foreign ministers of several Arab countries, who had planned to visit the occupied West Bank this weekend, condemned on Saturday Israel's decision to block their trip.
The ministers condemned "Israel's decision to ban the delegation's visit to Ramallah (on Sunday) to meet with the president of the State of Palestine, Mahmud Abbas", the Jordanian foreign ministry said. Ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain had been expected to take part alongside the secretary-general of Arab League.
Israel said Friday it would not cooperate, effectively blocking the visit as it controls the territory's borders and airspace.

Once booked for Babri play, now in dock for inflammatory speech—who is RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat
The police in Dakshina Kannada district booked Bhat on Monday for allegedly delivering a provocative speech during a memorial meeting at Kavalapaduru village on 12 May. A case was filed in the Bantwal Rural police station under Section 352(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempting to incite enmity between groups. Bhat is a prominent Hindutva activist who runs a chain of educational institutions and heads other organisations, largely based in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district. He is also seen as a mentor to several BJP leaders, including the late Ananth Kumar, Prathap Simha, Nalin Kumar Kateel and several others. Bengaluru: The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government has filed a case against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and several others for provocative speeches and attempting to disrupt peace. leader of the opposition, warned of protests if the cases were not withdrawn. 'Cases are being filed long after incidents occur. If false allegations are made and cases are filed against Hindu activists, we will take to the streets and protest,' Ashoka said Monday in a statement. The filing of cases comes days after several Muslim leaders from the Congress decided to tender resignations en masse over inaction by the Siddaramaiah government to take action against the growing environment of hate and retaliatory killings in Karnataka. There have been renewed tensions following the brutal murder of Abdul Rahiman last Tuesday in what appears to be part of the long list of retaliatory or tit-for-tat killings in the communally sensitive coastal belt of Karnataka. Rahiman's killing was allegedly in retaliation to the killing of Suhas Shetty on 1 May in a busy street in Mangaluru. Bhat is said to have delivered the speech at a condolence meeting held in memory of Shetty. However, this is not the first time that the Sangh functionary's name has featured in cases of provocative speeches and commentary on Hindu-Muslim issues. Bhat was in the news six years ago when one of the schools he administers recreated a play of the Babri Masjid destruction. Former BJP MP Prathap Simha, Sri Rama Sena chief Pramod Muthalik and several other leaders under the umbrella group, Federation of All Hindu Organisations, met senior police officers in Bengaluru, asking them to take action against the growing threats to Hindu leaders. 'At the outset, we unequivocally condemn all forms of communal killings. However, the subsequent targeting of Hindu leaders, unchecked incitement, and lawlessness demands urgent intervention,' the group said in its letter to the Director General & Inspector General of Police. Former BJP MP Prathap Simha told reporters Monday that the government was responsible for not putting an end to retaliatory murders in Karnataka. 'If Praveen Nettaru was not killed, would this series of murder have started? Who killed Suhas Shetty? If they broke the nexus of those who killed Nettaru, we would not have Kerala-style murders in Karnataka,' he claimed. Simha added that the entire coastal districts were in the grip of terror and that this was not just about the Hindus but also the Christians. He said that instead of cracking down on members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) and its affiliates, the Siddaramaiah government was going after people like Bhat and Nalin Kumar Kateel among others who were trying to allay fears of the Hindus and to keep them united. The video of the play showed students enacting the role of Karsevaks—who brought down the Babri Masjid—during their annual sports day at Sri Rama Vidyakendra School in Dakshina Kannada district. 'Each year students recreate important events that happened in the year. This year, the historic decision on the Ramjanmabhoomi prompted students to recreate the scene,' Bhat, the president of the Sri Rama Vidyakendra Trust that runs the school, had said. In November 2020, the RSs functionary referred to Ullal in Mangaluru as 'Pakistan' as the number of Muslims continued to grow in the region. 'There are many Pakistans created in India by the rising Muslim population. We must increase our population to protect our temples. Otherwise, who will protect our temples and our culture?' an ANI report quoted the Sangh leader as saying. In 2017, following the murder of RSS worker Sharath Madiwala, BJP leader B.S. Yediyurappa had remarked that any action against Bhat and the 'the entire state would go up in flames'. 'This is a warning to Siddaramaiah. If Prabhakar Bhat is arrested, then the entire state will go up in flames. BJP workers will go out on the streets and the Congress government alone will be responsible for the deterioration of law and order,' Yeddyurappa had said at the time. It is a straight fight between LDF, UDF in Nilambur, says Congress
The Congress-led United Democratic Front's (UDF) sidestepped questions about the purported political fallout from All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) State coordinator P.V. Anvar's decision to plough his own furrow in the Nilambur Assembly byelection and stressed the impending ballot box battle was solely between the ruling front and the Opposition. Inaugurating the UDF's election convention in Nilambur on Monday, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal said belated entrants into the electoral fray, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), were not a factor in the crucial bypoll. Mr. Venugopal said the BJP's indecision over fielding a candidate and cobbling together a campaign spearheaded by a political lightweight poached from another party at the last minute smacked of a sly attempt to stack the decks in favour of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Nilambur. 'I sense a replay of the CPI(M)-BJP nexus that gifted the NDA the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat in 2024,' he said. Mr. Venugopal said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said a 'betrayal' precipitated the Nilambur bypoll. He said Mr. Vijayan had betrayed Nilambur which gave the LDF two terms by demonising the Malappuram electorate as gold smugglers, hawala agents and economic offenders who fund anti-national activities. Mr. Vijayan forgot the brave martyrs of Malappuram who died fighting the colonial forces. Mr. Venugopal alleged that Mr. Vijayan had accused the IUML leadership of harbouring fundamentalist forces, forgetting that the Thangal family had played a vital role in promoting communal harmony during tense times, including the demolition of the Babri Masjid. He accused Mr. Vijayan of deliberately avoiding the site of the NH-66 collapse in Malappuram to avoid offending the BJP-led Central government. 'The Chief Minister has not uttered a word against the entrenched corruption in the construction of highways in Kerala, pussyfooting around the issue to avoid offending the powers that be at the centre and claiming credit for the scheme through embellished social media reels,' he said. Mr. Venugopal termed the Nilambur bypoll as the semi-finals before the 2026 Assembly polls. The AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, Deepa Dasmunshi, said the bypoll was more of a quarter final. 'We have the local body polls and then the Assembly polls', she said. Ms. Dasmunshi seemed seeking to dampen speculation that the IUML was upset over Congress shutting the door on TMC leader P.V. Anvar and provoking the latter to throw his hat into the ring. 'The UDF stands as one,' she said. The LDF campaign sought to make much of the fact that most of the Thangal family, including IUML president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, had not attended the UDF election convention. IUML leader P.K. Kunhalikutty said Mr. Thangal had rung him from Makkah, where the latter had gone for Haj, to enquire about the rally and other political developments. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan and KPCC president Sunny Joseph, MLA, also spoke.
