Ahmedabad gears up for UTT Season 6 opener: Dabang Delhi to face Jaipur Patriots
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], May 30 (ANI): Ultimate Table Tennis Season 6 will begin on May 31 and feature top Indian and international stars in action. The opening day will see Dabang Delhi TTC face Jaipur Patriots, followed by Dempo Goa Challengers taking on debutants Ahmedabad SG Pipers.
The league will feature 23 ties over 16 action-packed days, culminating in the Grand Finale on June 15. The season will be hosted at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad.
One of the league's most compelling stories is Diya Chitale, India's top-ranked national female player, who returns this season as its highest-valued Indian athlete, just years after watching the action as a fan in the stands.
'I was in the stands watching the action very keenly when the first season of UTT took place. Ever since the league started, I have been very excited about it, and always wanted to play in it. I got my chance in 2023, and it has been so exciting. Every year, I look forward to when it's going to happen,' said Diya, who will again represent Dabang Delhi in the league, as quoted from a press release by UTT.
Staged under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, UTT continues to grow as a premier professional league. This season will feature 48 players from 14 countries, including 16 Olympians, highlighting the tournament's strong international presence.
This year's opening serves up a special storyline for defending champion Harmeet Desai, who will represent the Dempo Goa Challengers in his home state of Gujarat for the first time in UTT history.
'This is the first time we are playing in Gujarat, that too in Ahmedabad, and I am delighted by it. I am from Gujarat, I was born and brought up here, and so I hope to enjoy a lot of support. This will be a good opportunity for the youngsters, too, where they can interact and learn from international players,' Harmeet said.
Making her league debut, Chinese paddler Fan Siqi is the highest-valued player this season, after securing a winning bid of 19.7 lakh tokens in the first-ever UTT auction from Season 3 champions Stanley's Chennai Lions.
Speaking on the unique gender-inclusive nature of the league, one of the only such competitions in the world, Fan said: 'I feel that both the men's and women's players play a very important role in the team events. I myself try to do the best I can and focus on every moment.'
The league also puts the spotlight on youth, with 25 Indian players under the age of 25 featuring this season. Among them are promising names like Ankur Bhattacharjee, Payas Jain, Abhinandh PB, Taneesha Kotecha, Sayali Wani, and Yashaswini Ghorpade, all eager to leave their mark on the big stage.
Reflecting on the league's growing impact, Yashaswini said: 'UTT has built a strong foundation for Indian table tennis. We are rapidly rising in the world rankings, and the rest of the nations have started seeing us as a contender. It's a big achievement and a huge step forward for Indian TT.'
The international presence in UTT this year sees paddlers from 14 nations outside India, including Germany, Italy, China, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Kazakhstan, Egypt, and more-a global mix that reinforces its status as a destination league for elite players.
Adriana Diaz, a trailblazer for Latin American table tennis and the second top-ranked player in UTT Season 6, now with debutants Kolkata ThunderBlades, returns to India with high expectations. 'It's going to be a lot of fun. There are new players, especially Fan Siqi and Dina Meshref, and many Indian players. It's going to be tough, but every time in India is fun and I hope I can enjoy myself,' said the Puerto Rican star.
Several high-profile international paddlers are making their UTT debuts this year, including Egypt's Dina Meshref, Germany's Ricardo Walther, and the USA's Kanak Jha.
Egyptian ace Meshref, who joins PBG Pune Jaguars, talked glowingly of the league, based on other players' testimonials: 'I've heard a lot about UTT from other players--and all of those good things! I heard it's a one-of-a-kind experience. I am sure any new experience will benefit me, and I am excited about it.'
Germany's Ricardo Walther, representing Ahmedabad SG Pipers, said: 'It's a bit different, but I try to play my own game. I know it's a bit shorter, I have only three games, so I need to be there from the beginning with full focus. All the sets are important, even the mixed doubles is important, we don't play it so often in Germany, but we practice it a lot here.

Bengaluru stampede: Activist lodges police complaint against Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli NEW DELHI: A police complaint was lodged against cricketer Virat Kohli on Friday, two days after a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left 56 people injured in Bengaluru. Social activist HM Venkatesh submitted the complaint at the Cubbon Park police station in the city. Police stated that the complaint would be considered under an already registered case and examined during the course of the ongoing investigation of the stampede incident, news agency ANI reported. The stampede occurred as a large number of people thronged the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), of which Kohli is a former captain and has played for since the Indian Premier League (IPL) started in 2008, were celebrating their maiden title win. In the final, held on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, RCB defeated Punjab Kings to clinch IPL for the first time, triggering wild celebrations in the country's IT capital. According to Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, 2-3 lakh fans turned up to participate in the celebrations. The ground's capacity, on the other hand, is around 35,000. Under fire, the state government suspended Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and several senior police officials, and ordered the arrest of representatives of RCB, DNA entertainment private limited and Karnataka State Cricket Association. It also handed over the probe to a one-man judicial commission of retired Karnataka high court judge, justice Michael Cunha.

Meshref's injury derails Jaguars as Challengers prove too hot to handle
The toss was done, and the line-ups were announced. But during the warm-ups, Dina Meshref – PBG Pune Jaguars' ace paddler of the Ultimate Table Tennis' sixth season – pulled out after having hurt her back during its last outing. Such was the blow for Jaguars that they never recovered from it and lost to defending champion Dempo Goa Challengers 5-10. Goa Challengers started strongly and took a 7-2 lead in the first three ties itself. Had Anirban Ghosh – the surprise package of the season – not stunned veteran Tiago Apolonia and Reeth Rishya not taken a game off Zeng Jian, the Jaguars would have faced a mauling. The 10-5 scoreline in favour of the Goa outfit eventually kept both teams in the hunt for the semifinals. As per the UTT rules, Jaguars had to pick a replacement from the choice of two overseas players. It went with South Korea's Zion Lee. But with the sudden call-up, Zion wilted under the big-match pressure as Krittwika Sinha Roy stunned the Korean 2-1. Minutes earlier, Harmeet Desai – Krittwika's husband – had edged past Spaniard southpaw Alvaro Robles in the match of the day. Harmeet and Robles – familiar foes at UTT and on the world tour – enthralled the audience with superb strokeplay. It was Harmeet's control with the backhand and powerful forehand winners that eventually set the tone for the Challengers. As expected, Harmeet and Zeng made a clean sweep against Anirban Ghosh and Zion – teaming up for the first time – in the mixed doubles to widen the margin. The results: Dempo Goa Challengers bt PBG Pune Jaguars 10-5 (Harmeet Desai bt Alvaro Robles 11-10, 11-9, 10-11; Krittwika Sinha Roy bt Zion Lee 11-5, 5-11, 11-6; Zeng Jian & Harmeet bt Zion & Anirban Ghosh 11-9, 11-5, 11-9; Tiago Apolonia lost to Anirban Ghosh 9-11, 11-8, 7-11; Zeng Jian bt Reeth Rishya 10-11, 11-7, 11-4). Dabang Delhi TTC bt Kolkata ThunderBlades 8-7 (Quek Izaac lost to Ankur Bhattacharjee 6-11, 11-6, 10-11; Maria Xiao lost to Adriana Diaz 7-11, 5-11, 11-10; Maria Xiao & G. Sathiyan bt Adriana Diaz & Ankur Bhattacharjee 11-7, 11-7, 9-11; Sathiyan lost to Quadri Aruna 11-7, 9-11, 6-11; Diya Chitale bt Ananya Chande 11-4, 11-6, 11-7). Saturday's fixtures: Jaipur Patriots vs Ahmedabad SG Pipers (5 p.m.); U Mumba TT vs Stanley's Chennai Lions (7.30 p.m.).

KL Rahul Sends Direct Message To Gautam Gambhir With Brilliant Ton As Opener
KL Rahul scored a century, making 116 runs in the 2nd unofficial Test against England Lions. Rahul's innings included 15 fours and one six, showcasing his batting prowess after five months. India A ended Day 1 at 213 for three, with Rahul contributing significantly to the team's total. Star batter KL Rahul dazzled with a commanding century on Day 1 of the 2nd unofficial Test between India A and England Lions in Northampton on Friday. Playing his first red-ball game in nearly five months, Rahul opened for India A ahead of the upcoming Test series against England. He reached triple figures in the final session after England Lions captain James Rew opted to bowl at the County Ground. Rahul dominated the Lions pacers during his stay in the middle and didn't let his confidence break. Rahul was eventually dismissed for 116 (168) by Josh Hill. He hit 15 fours and one six during his knock. Earlier, India A reached 213 for three at tea with Rahul unbeaten on 93 while Dhruv Jurel was also batting on 37. In a prolonged second session to make up for the lost time and overs in the opening one, Indian batters made merry on a sporting track with none of the Lions bowlers barring Chris Woakes (3/30) being able to make any inroads. India lost only one wicket in the second session in the form of Karun Nair (40), who was trapped leg-before by Woakes. Rahul made a watchful 93 off 143 deliveries as he hit 12 fours and a six, putting on a sturdy 89-run stand for the third wicket with Nair after India were rocked early.. But after Nair's dismissal and particularly after crossing his fifty, Rahul took the aggressive route to move close to a triple-figure mark while putting on an unbeaten 87 runs for the fourth wicket.. England all-rounder Woakes, playing in this contest to get some game-time and prove his fitness after he was named the Test side for the opening match of the five-Test series against India, seemed to be hitting his strides. Woakes continued to move the ball around dangerously and challenged the defences well to snaffle each of the three wickets fallen since the play began here at the County ground. Yashasvi Jaiswal (17) and and Abhimanyu Easwaran (11) fell in the first session. Nair, who hit four boundaries to make 40 off 71 balls, looked set for a big total but fell during a passage of play in which Woakes and George Hill troubled the No 4 batter. Woakes beat the bat a few times before finding an edge off Nair's bat which flew past gully for four outside off in the 34th over. On the next delivery, he angled one into the batter who failed to get his bat down on time.. Another England hopeful Josh Tongue, however, struggled for rhythm as he gave away 61 runs from 14 overs.. Brief scores: India A 213/3 in 52 overs (KL Rahul 93*, Karun Nair 40, Dhruv Jurel 37*; Chris Woakes 3/30) vs England Lions.
