Samastha seeks revocation of Asgar Ali Faizy's expulsion from Arabic college
The Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, the largest body of traditional Islamic scholars in the State, has sought revocation of Asgar Ali Faizy's expulsion from Jamia Nooriyya Arabic College, Pattikkad.
A meeting of the 40-member Mushawara, the topmost decision-making body of the Samastha, held in Kozhikode on Tuesday took the decision against the management of the Jamia Nooriyya Arabic College, the Samastha's flagship institution.
Mr. Faizy, a veteran scholar and senior Mushawara member, was expelled from Jamia Nooriyya in March reportedly in retaliation for his veiled criticism against Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal.
Although Jamia Nooriyya functions under the Samastha, the college is being managed by IUML leaders.
The Mushawara decided to demand the reinstatement of Mr. Faizy at Jamia Nooriyya, with Bahaudheen Nadvi submitting a dissenting note. Mr. Nadvi is known to align with the IUML on key issues where the party and the Samastha have differing views.
The Mushawara formed a panel to meet Mr. Thangal and urge him to implement a nine-point charter related to the Coordination of Islamic Colleges (CIC).
The Samastha had made the charter as part of finding a solution to an impasse it had with the CIC several months ago. But it was not implemented.
The Mushawara decided to demand Mr. Thangal's resignation as head of the CIC if he failed to implement the nine-point charter.
The Mushawara also decided to summon the leaders of the Sunni Mahallu Federation (SMF) to normalise its committee formations under the Samastha's umbrella.
The Mushawara decisions are viewed to have far-reaching consequences, especially in the light of the ongoing tug-of-war between the Samastha and a faction supporting the IUML. All the three decisions will impact the Samastha's relations with the IUML as the party leadership is directly connected with them.
Mr. Thangal holds significant influence over both the CIC and Jamia Nooriyya, putting him directly at the centre of the Samastha's latest decisions and demands. This could lead to a major showdown between the two entities.
The IUML faction within the Samastha appears to be backing Mr. Thangal for a top leadership position, seeking recognition as the supreme leader of the Muslim community. However, the Samastha asserts its authority, believing that no Muslim political leader regardless of their scholarship or social standing is above the Samastha's leadership.

NIA cracks down on Hizb-ut-Tahrir network in Raj
Jaipur: National Investigation Agency (NIA) Saturday extended its crackdown on banned Islamist group Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) to Rajasthan, conducting early morning raids in Jhalawar as part of a larger operation spanning multiple states, including Madhya Pradesh. Two locations in Jhalawar—a house at Kaji Chowk and a shop near Jama Masjid—were searched during the seven-hour-long operation that began around 4:30am. Digital devices were seized during the raids and were sent to the forensic science laboratory for analysis. The operation was launched following specific intelligence indicating presence of active HuT members in the area. The NIA was assisted by local police teams, who were deployed on site after receiving prior which conducted simultaneous raids at several locations in Bhopal, suspects Hizb-ut-Tahrir is working to radicalise young people and forge links with global terror networks such as ISIS. "The case, registered by NIA as part of its efforts to destroy various terrorist and radical networks and outfits trying to spread mayhem across the country, relates to HuT's conspiracy to radicalise and recruit vulnerable Muslim youth. The youth were being motivated to spread violence in a bid to overthrow the democratically elected govt and establish an Islamic State governed by Shariah law," the agency stated in a statement. The lead that triggered the raids came from Bhopal, where NIA detained a man last week. NCBC raises questions on Bengal's revised OBC list
New Delhi: The National Commission for Backward Classes ( NCBC ) has raised questions over West Bengal government's new list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and has sought information within three days on the recommendations and survey conducted to include new communities in the state list. West Bengal's state OBC list has been in the eye of a political storm since last year with the BJP accusing ruling Trinamool Congress of appeasing Muslim communities by including them in the state OBC list. The high court had scrapped 113 names from the list of OBCs, retaining 66, last year. This didn't deter Mamata Banerjee-led state government which added 76 castes in the state OBC list taking the total to 140 this month. Of the 113 castes scrapped by high court, 76 have now been added back, while two from the list of 66 retained by high court have been taken out. NCBC has waded into the controversy now. NCBC chairman Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said the state government had not shared similar information the Commission had sought when it had prepared the earlier list. "We have sought information on three counts from the state within three days," said Ahir. In 2023, West Bengal had recommended inclusion of 87 castes, including 80 of Muslim community, in the Central List of OBCs. This had prompted NCBC to seek information from the state and details on what basis the government had made such a recommendation. NCBC has been red-flagging anomalies in implementation of reservation policy in West Bengal. After a field visit in February 2023, NCBC had found Rohingyas and Bangladeshi immigrants had got OBC certificates and taken reservation benefits. The state government has made a survey the basis of inclusion of castes in OBC list. Now, Ahir has raised the objection that if this information was available why was it not supplied to NCBC. Citing the notifications of the state government, Ahir has written, "These notifications provide that these exercises have been carried out on the detailed survey. A copy of the proforma for the survey is attached. The National Commission for Backward Classes desires that the recommendations of the West Bengal State Commission along with the Survey reports specifically the information relating to point No. 13(C), 13(D) & 19(A) of the proforma with all the supporting documents being provided. The above sought information may be furnished within 3 working days." Points 13 (C) and 13 (D) pertain to the profession of people surveyed and how many are in government service. Point 19 (A) in the proforma asks respondents the level of education. NCBC says it has been seeking information on these counts from the state government and the reservation policy being followed.
