Prove ‘divisive' label, Sarawak DAP tells Sim

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Sarawak DAP has challenged Sarawak deputy premier Dr Sim Kui Hian to prove his claim that the party is 'divisive'. Sarawak DAP secretary Violet Yong reminded Sim that his Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) had worked with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and its influential component PAS when Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chose to align with PN in 2020. In a statement to FMT, Yong said this was proof that SUPP was willing to work with 'extremists' whose agendas ran counter to Sarawak's multicultural values. 'That decision alone speaks volumes about their priorities and the compromises they are willing to make in the name of political expediency,' she said. 'I challenge Dr Sim to point to a single example where DAP has ever divided Sarawakians. When have we ever played the politics of race or religion? The answer is never.' Sim said yesterday that Sarawak had enjoyed prolonged political stability because DAP was never part of the state government. The GPS vice-chairman also said that DAP was divisive and polarising, Dayak Daily reported.
Advertisement Yong, the Pending assemblyman, accused Sim of 'political ignorance and whitewashing' with his statement, calling it a 'gross insult' to the fundamentals of parliamentary democracy. She said DAP, which won only two out of 82 seats at the last state polls, accepted the results and had worked on being an effective opposition by providing checks and balances. 'That is the essence of democracy – not blind obedience to those in power, but principled service to the rakyat. Falling drones on streets and residential buildings in the northern city of Chernihiv sparked several fires, including at residential houses, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, the head of the city's military administration, said on Telegram. Four people were hospitalised, Bryzhynskyi said. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said another 20 people, including eight children, received medical assistance at the site. The service posted photos on its Telegram account showing firefighters battling blazes in the dark and medics attending to a group of children. In the southern port city of Odesa, Russian overnight air attacks damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, but there were no injuries, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov wrote on Telegram. The full scale of the overnight Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Moscow and Reuters could not independently verify the Ukrainian reports. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. Cambodia to file complaint with ICJ over Thai border disputea

(EPA Images pic) PHNOM PENH: Cambodia will file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over border disputes with Thailand, prime minister Hun Manet said today, after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a recent frontier clash. 'Cambodia hopes that the Thai side will agree with Cambodia to jointly bring these issues to the International Court of Justice… to prevent armed confrontation again over border uncertainty,' Hun Manet said during a meeting between MPs and senators. Military clashes between the Southeast Asian neighbours erupted in 2008 and have led to several years of sporadic violence, resulting in at least 28 deaths. The most recent occurred Wednesday, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a location known as the Emerald Triangle – a joint border area between Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. The day after, Cambodia's foreign ministry sent a letter to the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh demanding 'an immediate and thorough investigation' into the 'unprovoked attack'. Describing the incident as 'a violation of Cambodian sovereignty', Phnom Penh said it remained committed to resolving the issue through 'peaceful and diplomatic avenues'. Prime minister Hun Manet said that even if the Thai side did not agree on bringing the issue to the ICJ, Cambodia would still file the complaint. He added that the border dispute was being 'incited by small extremist groups in both countries', which could lead to further clashes. Thailand's ministry of foreign affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP. Cambodia's military had said they were attacked first in Wednesday's incident, while the Thai side said their soldiers were responding to gunshots. The Thai and Cambodian militaries met the following day, agreeing to ease tensions. Thailand says a joint boundary committee will meet in the next two weeks to resolve the issue. The Emerald Triangle is among the areas that will be named in the ICJ complaint, Hun Manet said. Another is Ta Moan Thom Temple, the backdrop for a video posted on social media earlier this year showing a woman singing a patriotic Khmer song which led to Bangkok lodging a formal protest to Phnom Penh. Cambodia and Thailand have long been at odds over their more than 800km-long border, which was largely drawn during the French occupation of Indochina. London police say arrested 4th suspect in arson attack on Starmer's home

The fire at the British prime minister's home occurred on May 12. As a result, the front door of the building was damaged. The prime minister's home, where he lived for almost 20 years before moving to Downing Street, is located on Countess Road in north London. UK media reported that Starmer is currently renting out his home. 'A 48-year-old man was arrested on Monday, 2 June at London Stansted Airport ... on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life,' the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Monday. The arrest is reportedly related to three incidents: a car fire on May 8, a fire at the entrance to a building on May 11, and a fire in a residential building on May 12. All incidents are connected to a well-known public figure, the statement noted.
