Russian court orders house arrest of politician accused of discrediting the Russian army

Reutersa day ago

MOSCOW, June 11 (Reuters) - A court in Pskov said on Wednesday it had ruled that opposition politician Lev Shlosberg be placed under house arrest for two months and face unspecified restrictions on his activities at the request of state prosecutors.
Shlosberg was detained on Tuesday and charged with discrediting the Russian army after describing the war in Ukraine as a game of "bloody chess", his party said.
The 61-year-old made the comment in a video debate in January in which he urged an end to the war. The liberal Yabloko party, of which Shlosberg is a senior member, said his arrest was linked to those remarks. He denies the charge, it said.
The court service of the Pskov region, which borders Estonia, on Wednesday published an image of Shlosberg at a court hearing standing up inside a courtroom cage.
It noted that the authorities had already designated Shlosberg "a foreign agent," a label which carries negative Soviet-era connotations and complicates designees' lives.
Shlosberg, one of relatively few opposition politicians remaining in the country, faces up to five years in jail if convicted.

Peru weighs sending foreign prisoners to El Salvador

LIMA, June 12 (Reuters) - Peru is weighing sending what it considers highly dangerous foreign inmates to prisons in El Salvador, the prime minister said on Thursday, potentially following in the footsteps of the U.S.' deportations of migrants to the Central American nation. Peruvian Prime Minister Eduardo Arana did not immediately detail what such an agreement with El Salvador would look like, but the U.S. has paid El Salvador to imprison Venezuelan migrants it alleges are gang members. "The government is evaluating bilateral cooperation mechanisms for the transfer of highly dangerous foreign inmates to their countries of origin, including specialized centers such as the CECOT in El Salvador," Arana told Congress. He did not clarify whether Peru would only send Salvadoran prisoners to the nation or whether other foreign inmates could be sent as well. The prime minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The CECOT is El Salvador's notorious maximum-security prison known for its harsh conditions, which have drawn sharp outcry from human rights groups. Arana added that the Andean nation was seeking development bank financing to build more prisons of its own as it deals with overcrowding and a recent crime wave. Peru has declared states of emergency in regions across the country in recent months, including in capital Lima, to tackle crime. In May, illegal miners kidnapped and killed 13 mine workers in Peru's northern district of Pataz.

Trump launches website for $5m Gold Card – and is mocked for its cheap look

Donald Trump has officially launched his promised gold card which will grants U.S. residency to foreign investors for $5 million – but instantly faced mockery for the supposedly cheap-looking website he's selling them on. 'THE TRUMP CARD IS COMING! Thousands have been calling and asking how they can sign up to ride a beautiful road in gaining access to the Greatest Country and Market anywhere in the World, ' the president wrote on Truth Social. Trump added that the waiting list for the card was 'NOW OPEN' but did not offer further details as to when the cards may be coming available. As if to counter the clunky appearance of the site, a note is included at the top of the page that it is an 'official government site.' The website also does not offer information on a specific launch date – or indeed further information of any kind. A mostly black web page greets visitors with the words: 'Trump Card Is Coming.' Interested parties are encouraged to enter their information into a form to be notified 'the moment access opens.' The site also features a picture of the gold 'Trump Card,' which has the president's photo and signature on the front. Trump showed a version of the card to reporters onboard Air Force One back in April. Social media was quick to react to the news, with one user writing: 'We live in an idiocracy' and another adding: 'This government is a f****** joke, holy f***.' More piled in on the cheap look of the site. 'Lmao this is literally the entire site,' wrote another user, in a short video showing the minimalist page. 'This is the cheesiest thing I've ever seen in my life....' added another. Others noted what they interpreted as a more sinister side of the offer. 'Can we take a moment and realize how disgusting the idea of a trump card is (the instant immigration card for 5 mil),' wrote one user. 'That's so damn dystopian like hey yeah pay me an ungodly amount of money and instantly get treated better than natural born citizens because you're upper class.' 'Abhorrent. Is this what you all voted for? Selling an America fast-pass to people like Russian oligarchs and the like?' added another. The information form on the page to apply for the card requests users fill out their name 'My name is (First, Last),' where they are from, 'from Region' and why they are interested in applying for the card. The gold Trump Card was first announced by the president in February, who said it would grant those with them the same privileges as green card holders, who have permanent residency in the U.S. Administration officials previously suggested that the card will replace the EB-5 immigrant investor visa program, which provides a path for foreign nationals to achieve permanent residence (a green card) in the United States. The program requires a minimum investment of $800,000 in the U.S. to qualify but was 'poorly run,' according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Trump said in February that the money from the gold cards would be used to 'pay down a lot of debt,' though did not elaborate. The president has also said previously the card was a way to get 'wealthy people' to invest in the U.S. by 'spending a lot of money, paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people.' Asked whether he would consider selling the cards to Russian oligarchs, Trump responded: 'Yeah, possibly. I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people.' The president has previously said he does not need the go ahead from Congress to launch the program. It is uncertain how applications for the Trump Card will be processed and who by.

UK forces chief praised ‘responsible' China on Beijing visit

The head of the armed forces sought to build ties with Beijing and drive a wedge between it and Moscow in a speech the British government did not want public. Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of the defence staff, told future Chinese military officers that the UK 'respects China', which was a 'responsible nuclear power' like Britain. By contrast he accused President Putin of engaging in 'irresponsible nuclear rhetoric', which he said was a 'concern for the whole world', in particular the UK and China. 'This [Ukraine war] is more than struggle over borders on a map. It is a challenge to global order. The chaos and instability unleashed by Russia is being felt by countries near and far,' he told the People's Liberation Army National Defence University in Beijing. The Times revealed in April that Radakin had travelled to China in the first visit by a head of the British armed forces in a decade. Government officials had hoped to keep the visit hidden from the public, it is understood. The trip coincided with the escalation of a trade war between the US and China. The secrecy enabled China to dominate the narrative. Its defence ministry said the two sides had discussed 'co-operation with the two militaries'. The Ministry of Defence and the Chinese embassy in London declined to provide a copy of Radakin's speech but it was released after a freedom of information request. Radakin later said he visited China to ensure that lines of communication existed between the two militaries, should there be a need to deal with an escalation of tensions and prevent miscalculation. It is understood he regrets the fact that communication with Valery Gerasimov, his Russian counterpart, has been lost. Gerasimov had not returned Radakin's requests for a call since the Ukraine invasion, a military source said. • Britain faces decades of security threats, says military chief Radakin told his Chinese audience that the UK sought a 'constructive relationship, and an open dialogue between us' and at the same time would ensure its national interests were protected. 'The more we talk, the more we will find our common interests and approaches to transnational challenges,' he said. He also appeared to pave the way for the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales or, more likely, one of its escort ships to sail through the contentious Taiwan Strait this year. The carrier strike group is on its way to the Indo-Pacific region. Radakin said the principles of navigation and law of the sea mattered, and this was why British naval vessels 'regularly exercise right of freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea'. He added: 'I am glad to say most of these exercises happen without incident. Our interactions with Chinese forces are normally safe and professional.' China claims self-governed Taiwan as part of its territory and the US believes Beijing is preparing for a full-scale invasion of the island. • China accuses Hegseth of 'Cold War mentality' after Taiwan warning Radakin also made some pointed remarks about China's one-party dictatorship, saying that after the death of Queen Elizabeth and numerous changes in government in Westminster, 'the wheels of government continued to turn'. He added: 'There was no panic. No civil unrest. The outgoing prime minister stood outside Downing Street to wish their successor the best. Our uncodified constitution balances continuity and change with great effect.' China has ramped up its activities in the waters and airspace around Taiwan in recent months. In a display of Beijing's growing military reach, two Chinese aircraft carriers were spotted operating in separate areas in the Pacific on Saturday, both near remote southern islands belonging to Japan.
