ChatGPT could be silently rewiring your brain as experts urge caution for long-term use

Using ChatGPT on a long-term basis could have negative effects on brain function.
That's according to a study led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which found that using a large language model (LLM) to write multiple essays over a four-month period could hamper cognitive abilities.
In the study, 54 participants were divided into three groups.
One group used ChatGPT, an LLM product made by OpenAI, to write an essay.
The second group used only a search engine, and the third group used only their own brains, according to a press release from MIT.
The participants underwent three sessions where they completed the same assignment. Then, in the fourth session, the LLM group was asked to write an essay without any tools, and the "brain-only" group was asked to use an LLM for assistance.
During each session, the researchers recorded the participants' brain activity using an EEG monitor to assess their "cognitive engagement and cognitive load" and to determine their neural activity, the release stated.
The participants also provided their own individual feedback during interviews.
Human teachers and an artificial intelligence agent scored the assessments.
"EEG analysis presented robust evidence that LLM, search engine and brain-only groups had significantly different neural connectivity patterns, reflecting divergent cognitive strategies," the researchers wrote.
Participants showed less brain connectivity when they used the tools to help write their essays, the study found.
"The brain‑only group exhibited the strongest, widest‑ranging networks; the search engine group showed intermediate engagement; and LLM assistance elicited the weakest overall coupling," the researchers wrote.
"The key isn't avoiding AI — it's building cognitive strength first."
In the fourth session, the participants who switched from LLM to brain-only showed "weaker neural connectivity" and less cognitive engagement.
The LLM group also had less ability to recall information from the essays they had just written.
Those who switched from brain-only to LLM had "higher memory recall" and greater cognitive engagement.
Based on these findings, the researchers said there could be a "possible decrease in learning skills" among LLM users.
"The use of LLM had a measurable impact on our participants, and while the benefits were initially apparent, as we demonstrated over the course of four sessions … the LLM group's participants performed worse than their counterparts in the brain-only group at all levels: neural, linguistic [and] scoring," they wrote.
The findings have been uploaded to Arxiv, a preprint service, but have not yet been peer-reviewed, as the researchers noted that "all conclusions are to be treated with caution and as preliminary."
There were also a limited number of participants who were all from the same geographical area.
"For future work, it will be important to include a larger number of participants coming from diverse backgrounds, like professionals in different areas and age groups, as well as ensure that the study is more gender-balanced," the researchers noted.
Only ChatGPT was used in the study; future research could incorporate other LLMs.
The EEG technology used to analyze brain connectivity could also have some limitations, as the researchers shared plans to use fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) in future studies.
"Our findings are context-dependent and are focused on writing an essay in an educational setting and may not generalize across tasks," they also stated.
"Future studies should also consider exploring longitudinal impacts of tool usage on memory retention, creativity and writing fluency."
Dr. Harvey Castro, an ER physician and "AI futurist" based in Texas, said he sees this study as a "neuro-wake-up call," especially for younger brains.
"ChatGPT can make you 60% faster, but that speed comes at the price of neuro-engagement," Castro, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.
"Brain connectivity collapses from 79 neural links to just 42, and 83% of users can't quote their own essays minutes later. Neuroplasticity research tells us developing brains will feel this hit hardest."
In emergency medicine, Castro said, doctors call this "failure to encode."
"The brain isn't processing and storing information," he said. "When neural connectivity drops by nearly half, we're looking at what researchers call 'cognitive debt.'"
For medical students, an inability to encode and recall information under pressure could have serious implications for clinical decision-making, Castro noted.
"The same neural networks that consolidate essay information are involved in diagnostic reasoning," he said.
Using LLMs for extended periods can be convenient, but could cause cognitive muscles to "atrophy" over time, the expert cautioned.
There was one encouraging finding, however.
"When people with strong foundational skills later used ChatGPT, they showed enhanced connectivity," Castro said. "The key isn't avoiding AI — it's building cognitive strength first."
In education, he emphasized the need for periods of "AI-free cognitive development."

Stargazers, get ready to take in some awe-inspiring sights. This month offers a parade of star clusters, meteors, and various planet sightings, including the difficult-to-spot dwarf planet Pluto. Here's what to look for in the July night sky. The globular cluster Messier 22 (M22) reaches its highest point in the sky around midnight local time, specifically for observers south of 46° N latitude, since M22's position favors the Southern Hemisphere. Located about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, M22 is one of the brightest globular clusters visible from Earth. Under dark skies, M22 appears as a faint smudge with the naked eye. But binoculars or a small telescope reveal its stunning structure—a densely packed sphere of hundreds of thousands of stars. Mercury is notoriously difficult to see from Earth, thanks to its proximity to the Sun. But on July 4, Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation, meaning the planet will be at its farthest apparent distance from the Sun in the evening sky. This event marks one of the best chances to see the elusive planet this year. Look west-northwest just after sunset, keeping your gaze close to the horizon. Mercury should be visible during the evening twilight hours. If it's cloudy, don't worry—you'll still be able to see Mercury for a few more weeks. Nicknamed the 'buck moon,' July's full moon occurs on the 10th. The moniker, drawn from Indigenous and colonial traditions in North America and popularized by the Farmer's Almanac, refers to the time of year when male deer, or bucks, begin to regrow their antlers. (Yes, they shed them annually.) (Learn the origins of the many names given to each full moon.) If you have a pair of binoculars, take a close look at the lunar surface. The bright rays radiating from Tycho crater and the dark basalt plains known as maria, the Latin word for 'seas,' are especially striking during a full moon. In the predawn hours of July 16, skywatchers can catch a triple encounter: the waning gibbous moon will sweep past Saturn and Neptune in the constellation Pisces. Saturn, the brighter of the two, is visible to the naked eye. Neptune, far dimmer, requires a telescope. Just three days prior, Saturn will have entered retrograde motion, appearing to move west across the sky rather than east. Before sunrise on July 20, the crescent moon will pass within a degree of the Pleiades, a bright open cluster also known as the Seven Sisters or Messier 45 (M45). Though home to more than 1,000 young, hot stars, most people can spot just six with the naked eye. (These are the best stargazing sites in North America.) The Pleiades shine brightest from November to March, but determined stargazers can spot them in late July, too. Their pairing with the moon on July 20 creates a picturesque scene, especially when viewed through binoculars, which frame the glittering stars and glowing crescent in the same field of view. On July 25, Pluto will lie directly opposite the Sun from Earth's perspective. Simultaneously, it will also reach perigee, its closest distance to Earth in its orbit. Although still nearly three billion miles away, it will shine slightly brighter than usual—making this the best chance to view the dwarf planet this year. (Did Pluto ever actually stop being a planet? Experts debate.) That said, Pluto remains a faint speck, even at its best. You'll need a reasonably powerful telescope and a detailed star chart to locate it in the constellation Sagittarius around midnight local time. On the evening of July 29, the moon will pass close to Mars in the constellation Taurus. Visibility may be limited in some locations, as the pair will appear low on the horizon and could be washed out by sunlight. If skies are clear, look for the waxing crescent moon and Mars's distinctive reddish glow. The Southern delta Aquariids meteor shower, active from July 18 to August 12, is expected to peak overnight from July 29 to 30. This year, the waning crescent moon will set early during the peak, leaving skies dark for optimal meteor viewing. (Here are nine must-see night sky events to look forward to in 2025.) Southern delta Aquariids meteors tend to be faint, and you might not see more than a dozen or two shooting stars per hour at most. For a more dramatic display, wait for August, when the delta Aquariids overlap with the brighter Perseids.

(NewsNation) — A dead NASA satellite is the source of a brief but extremely powerful radio signal initially thought to have come from deep space. Relay 2 was one of a pair of experimental communications satellites launched in 1962 and 1964. Relay 2 operated for just a year and a half, and transponders onboard stopped responding to radio signals in 1967 when the satellite went silent. The signal was detected last June, lasting less than 30 nanoseconds. Radio signals from space aren't uncommon, with pulsars, black holes, massive galaxies, stars and other cosmic phenomena putting out signals that get picked up by satellites. States may see the northern lights Wednesday The Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder radio telescope traced this specific signal back to its origin and found it was much closer to home. But Relay 2, still in Earth's orbit, didn't come back to life to send the signal, researchers say. Instead, it's likely that electrostatic discharge or plasma discharge after a micrometeoroid impact could have caused the radio burst. Relay 2 is one of many space objects that remain in Earth's orbit despite being nonfunctional. Some satellites are deorbited after about 25 years to burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. ISS leak delays mission, raises concerns at NASA But that's only allowed when operators can show that there is less than a 1 in 10,000 chance of injury or property damage after deorbiting. If that's not possible, a controlled deorbit may direct the satellite into a remote ocean area. But satellites that don't have enough fuel for reentry are left to orbit indefinitely, instruments and subsystems shut down. That leaves the possibility of other signals from zombie satellites, making it harder to determine what signals are coming from the cosmos and which are coming from human-made objects lingering in orbit.
