Prehistoric fun: T-rex races highlight Bay County Chamber of Commerce Block Party
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Bay County residents came together Thursday night for an evening of fun. The annual Bay County Chamber of Commerce block party brought out people of all ages.
Chamber members say the event celebrates growth in the community.
'It's really to give back into our community here in Bay County is so supportive of our businesses. So we want to give back. And we are chamber of commerce, but we're also chamber of community,' Bay County Chamber of Commerce President Patrick Chapin said.
Completed Econfina Creek improvements promote safety and efficiency
Crowds lined the streets, stopping to listen to live music by arcade sounds. Dozens of local businesses joined in, handing out free food, drinks, and ice cream.
Kids burned off energy with hula hoops and the bounce house. The bounce house is one of the many things here for kids to enjoy.
But the main event of the night is the t-rex relay race. 20 teams competed against each other in three engaging mini-games that participants must complete before reaching the finish line.Handlers led the t-rexes through each challenge.
'They each have a handler. Now, the handlers are really the heroes of all of it because these things are mean animals,' Chapin said.
Short arms proved to be a challenge for the T-rexes.

'The claws did not work very well with the water balloons, but other than that, it was super fun,' Dinosaur Beth Klein said.
Even Captain America and Black Widow showed up to get in on all of the fun.
In May, the Bay County Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating tourism appreciation month. One of those events will be 'Punch on the Porch' at the Mexico Beach Welcome Center on May 3rd.

The protests, which first began in the sanctuary city on Friday and continued over the weekend after ICE agents carried out raids in heavily Latino parts of Los Angeles, including a downtown clothing warehouse. Trump's deployment of the National Guard on Sunday further escalated tensions. Both California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass publicly denounced the move as unwarranted escalation. On Monday, Newsom confirmed that California will be taking legal action against Trump over his deployment of the National Guard. 'This is exactly what Donald Trump wanted,' he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). 'He flamed the fires and illegally acted to federalize the National Guard. The order he signed doesn't just apply to CA. It will allow him to go into ANY STATE and do the same thing. We're suing him.' Several celebrities have attended the protests, including Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and Finneas O'Connell, the latter of whom had shared that he was tear-gassed "almost immediately at the very peaceful protest." The Grammy-winning musician and older brother of Billie Eilish accused authorities of "inciting" the chaos, and in a different Instagram Story post, added, 'F--- ICE.' The BET Awards aired live from Los Angeles on Monday, hosted by Kevin Hart. This year's ceremony celebrated a milestone for the awards — 25 years of cultural excellence and spotlighting the most influential names in music, film, television, and sports. Doechii graciously accepted her first BET Award on Monday, but not without taking a moment to address the protests in Los Angeles over the Trump administration's ongoing immigration raids. 'As much as I'm honored by this award,' the rap star, 26, began her acceptance speech from the Peacock Theater in downtown LA, 'I do want to address what's happening outside of the building.' 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,' the Grammy winner continued. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest. And I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us.' The Grammy winner boldly called out how 'people are being swept up and torn from their families' before ending with a unifying message. The rapper's biting criticism of Trump comes after U.S. officials said the president authorized the deployment of 2,000 additional National Guard members to stop protests that erupted in LA over the weekend in response to the president's aggressive immigration policies. According to Reuters, the U.S. military will also temporarily deploy roughly 700 Marines to the city until more National Guard troops can arrive. Trump first ordered the National Guard to LA on Friday, as law enforcement clashed with protesters who criticized raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Some of those protesters were met with tear gas and pepper spray, NPR reported, after they gathered outside of a detention center on Sunday where detainees were initially held. On Saturday, ICE wrote in an X post that it arrested 118 immigrants as it attempted to enforce immigration law in the area. In his own Truth Social post, Trump slammed the 'Radical Left protests' while thanking the National Guard for a 'job well done' in responding to them. Since the protests began, Trump has floated the idea of invoking the Insurrection Act, which would give him the authority to respond to civil unrest by deploying the military. On Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to stop further deployment of the National Guard. After winning the BET Award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Doechii set aside a traditional acceptance speech to instead address the Trump administration's crackdown on protests in Los Angeles. The ceremony was held Monday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, just blocks from where protests against a series of brutal ICE raids have been held in downtown Los Angeles. The 'Alter Ego' rapper noted that proximity in her remarks, saying, 'as much as I'm honored by this award, I do want to address what's happening right now outside of the building.' 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order. Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us,' she continued. Since then Trump, falsely claiming that Los Angeles is beset by foreign invaders and citywide riots, federalized the California National Guard to suppress protests and is also sending U.S. Marines. Trump administration officials have also literally threatened to arrest Gov. Gavin Newsom for objecting to this. In addition, SEIU President David Huerta was arrested by ICE agents on Friday and is now facing federal criminal charged for protesting ICE activities.
