John Swinney condemns Rangers fans for ‘unacceptable' Graeme Souness banner

Glasgow Times05-05-2025

A display in the Copland Stand ahead of Sunday's William Hill Premiership match against Celtic depicted former Rangers manager Souness holding a double-barrelled shotgun, with the words 'Take aim against the rebel scum' underneath.
It was one of several flashpoints that sparked police involvement following the 1-1 draw.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'We are aware of the banner and enquiries are ongoing.'

Swinney declared it was 'vital' to have respectful behaviour at matches and that the Scottish Government would 'reflect' on the display.
Mr Swinney continued: 'Obviously there was a banner displayed which was unacceptable at the weekend.
'I don't think that was an appropriate image. But it's for the club to reflect on that issue, to address any issues and for the police to make their judgement about that matter as well.'
Several items, including a glass bottle, were also thrown into Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo's penalty area in the second half.

Rangers released a statement at the weekend, condemning the bottle-throwing and making clear the club did not approve of the image.
It said: 'Rangers Football Club condemns the actions of the individual who threw a bottle during today's match. This behaviour has no place at our stadium.
'Steps have already been taken to identify the person responsible, and the club will take the strongest possible action once their identity is confirmed.
'We also acknowledge that the tifo displayed prior to kick-off crossed a line and was unacceptable. Our approach to supporter displays has always been built on trust, with the responsibility placed on groups to exercise good judgement.

'We will reflect on how these displays are managed and engage with supporter groups to ensure the right balance of trust, responsibility and oversight is maintained moving forward.
'Rangers is proud of its passionate fanbase, and we all share a duty to protect the standards and reputation of our club.'
Police also confirmed they were studying footage of a Celtic fan at the match who appeared to be mocking the deaths of 66 Rangers fans during the 1971 Ibrox Disaster.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'We are aware of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.'

Cleland has served Saints since 2009, after joining as U20s manager under Derek McInnes and then stepping up to become assistant boss to Tommy Wright. The ex-Rangers and Everton star has stepped in as caretaker several times over the years and was part of the first-team coaching staff under Valakari last term. Saints will now bring in a coach/analyst from abroad, with a domestic-based number two being targeted. Valakari's son Paavo, who joined the staff mid-way through last season, will remain in his post as performance manager. Saints said: 'The club can confirm that there will be a restructuring of the football department as we look ahead to the 2025/26 season. Celtic 'demand' £21m for Daizen Maeda as first Fenerbahce bid branded laughable amid swirls of reunion with Ange

Fenerbahce are keen on the striker but their opening bid has reportedly been laughed out of the room Celtic have reportedly chased Fenerbahce's insulting opening offer for Daizen Maeda out of the building – and told them it will take £21m to land him. The Japan striker took his game up several gears last season with a stunning campaign that culminated with him sweeping up the awards. ‌ Maeda netted 33 goals in 52 appearances, and stepped into the void vacated by Kyogo by becoming their primary central striker for long spells. ‌ With that kind of form naturally comes interest and Turkish side Fenerbahce have been sniffing around. Sozcu in Turkey say talks are ongoing over the hitman with Fener identifying Maeda as the ideal replacement for Allan Saint-Maximin. It's claimed that an opening bid of €10m (£8.4m) wasn't even entertained by Celtic and that they've been told to come back with €25m (£21m) if they want to be taken seriously. It's added that Tottenham are also tracking Maeda although that may depend on their decision over Ange Postecoglou. The Australian brought Maeda to Celtic for just over £1m in 2022, and now faces an uncertain future in North London where owner Daniel Levy is considering sacking him despite winning the Europa League last term. Martin teases Rangers transfers before Champions League tie

The club are a little over a month away from their first competitive game of the 2025/26 season. This will come in the form of a Champions League qualifier - a huge match for the team early in his tenure. The players will return for pre-season training at the end of this month. Martin has revealed that there are some major areas he and other key figures at Rangers will need to recruit for before that two-legged tie towards the end of July. "There are a few positions where we'll need to strengthen fairly quickly and fairly early on," he told Sky Sports. "I'm also willing to be surprised and I'm open to being surprised by some of the players we have here. Read more: "I think the way we're going to try and work and play is going to give them the best chance to show us what they've got and to give us the best version of themselves and hopefully one or two surprises. "We'll need some help before that game for sure, but until we get in here and assess everyone, how many we'll need before the game or how realistic that is because football and the business and transfer window can be difficult. "I'm pretty sure by then we'll have one or two people [in], to help us add to the group."
