'Outstanding Carver has left big shoes to fill'
Departing Scotland assistant John Carver "has left big shoes to fill" says Steve Clarke as his right-hand man focuses solely on his role as Lechia Gdansk manager.
The 60-year-old took over the Polish top-flight team in November and will focus on his club job after being handed an extended contract.

Carver has been with Scotland since August 2020 when he replaced Alex Dyer as head coach Clarke's assistant
Speaking after the 4-0 friendly win over Liechtenstein in Vaduz, Clarke said: "John's leaving. He's got a full-time contract, three years in Gdansk. So he's going to move on. The only surprise for me is that it's taken five years for somebody to take John off me.
"We came across each other way back in 1998 at Newcastle when I was a young coach and John was an even younger coach. He was looking after the younger players at Newcastle.
"We always said that we'd try and work together. It took us a long time to get there. But we did. He's been outstanding for us.

"For me as a head coach, John's been a fantastic assistant. Obviously, I wish him all the best in the future. Now I've got to start the job of looking to fill his shoes, and they are big shoes to fill."

Powell 'honoured' by support over grandson's cancer
Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell has said his family have "stuck together" after his grandson Clarke was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in January. The club are raising money for Candlelighters Trust, which provides practical and emotional support to children with cancer in Yorkshire, at Sunday's home game against Leigh (14:30 BST) which will be broadcast live on BBC2. Advertisement "It has been a really difficult and emotional time for my family, especially for my daughter Kegan and her husband Eamonn," he told BBC Radio Leeds. "It's very difficult for families when something like this happens, particularly when it is someone so young - he was just before his first birthday when he went into hospital." Powell added: "He's had six months of constant treatment. LGI [Leeds General Infirmary] and the oncology ward have been unbelievable in treating Clarke. "We've done what families do and stuck together and supported one another. "It's the start of a journey and we're hopeful that he's going to be well. He's happy and smiling at the moment whilst still going through a very difficult time. Advertisement "He's been very brave and handled it so, so well. We're hoping he doesn't remember anything of it." Wakefield's players will wear special jerseys in Sunday's Super League game which will be auctioned for the charity. Powell credited the players and the club for the backing he and his family have received. "When he first got diagnosed I explained to the players and told them I just wanted them to treat me the same because I want to come here and this to be my diversion from the difficulties at home," he said. "The players have been phenomenal. "The shirt has got Clarke's name and the charity on the front of it and I'm proud and honoured that the club have done that." Advertisement He added: "A lot of my family will be here on Sunday and it will be a big day for the charity. They've been unbelievable providing support in all sorts of different ways. "I can't speak highly enough of the charity and the support it has put around my family at this very difficult time."

Poland coach resigns after dispute with star striker Robert Lewandowski
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The coach of Poland's national soccer team announced Thursday has resigned as head coach, days after a spat with star striker Robert Lewandowski. 'I have come to the conclusion that, given the current situation, the best decision for the good of the national team is my resignation from the position of head coach,' Michał Probierz said in a statement published by the Polish Football Association. Probierz stripped Barcelona striker Lewandowski of his position as team captain on the eve of a World Cup qualifier against Finland earlier this week, and named Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zieliński as the new captain. Lewandowski reacted by saying he would no longer play for the national team as long as Probierz remains head coach. Poland went on to suffer an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Finland, to put its qualifications hopes into jeopardy. The 36-year-old Lewandowski, who has played a record 158 games for his country and is the leading scorer with 85 goals, is arguably the most outstanding player in the history of Polish soccer. Lewandowski pulled out of last Friday's friendly over Moldova, citing tiredness from a La Liga title-winning season with Barcelona. Probierz, who took over in September 2023 after the disappointing tenure of Fernando Santos, managed to secure qualification for the 2024 European Championship but has since struggled. The Polish Football Association's president, Cezary Kulesza, had summoned Probierz on Wednesday to discuss the matter. 'I give coaches a lot of freedom, but with that comes responsibility.
