Thailand tightens border controls for tourists after Cambodia clash (AP)
BANGKOK: Thailand temporarily closed its biggest border crossing with Cambodia to local tourists on Saturday after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a recent military clash between the two uneasy neighbours.
There has been sporadic violence on the Thai-Cambodia frontier since fighting first broke out in 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths.
A Cambodian soldier was killed in the most recent outbreak on May 28 in an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet.
The Thai and Cambodian militaries agreed to ease tensions the following day but Cambodia then said it would keep its troops in the area, despite Thailand urging it to withdraw.
The Royal Thai Army took control of the "opening and closing" of all border crossings it shares with Cambodia on Saturday, citing a "threat to Thailand's sovereignty and security".
The 1st Army Region banned the passage of six-wheeled trucks and reduced the operating hours of the border crossing between Aranyaprathet in Thailand's southeast and Poipet in Cambodia's west.
It said in a statement on Saturday that Thais and Cambodians would only be allowed to cross for work and trade purposes.

The Aranyaprathet-Poipet border crossing sees the most land traffic between the two countries with several thousand people using it each day, many of them Thais going to gamble at casinos on the Cambodian side.
The Royal Thai Army told AFP that the restrictions only applied to citizens of the two countries but that implementation "may vary from place to place".
Six other border checkpoints tightened their opening hours and issued bans on six-wheeled vehicles.
The Thai army said trade remained unaffected and Cambodian workers were still permitted to enter Thailand.
Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Phumtham Wechayachai said in a statement on Saturday it was "deeply regrettable" that Cambodia had "rejected" the proposal to withdraw its armed forces after the May 28 incident.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Monday the kingdom would file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the border dispute.
Thai authorities said a Joint Boundary Committee would meet next week to resolve the issue.

The final phase of the operation involved Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters airlifting the remaining 63 tourists from Chaten on Thursday, with follow-up sorties resuming on Friday morning as weather conditions improved. The operation was carried out in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and local administration. Earlier in the week, more than 1,600 tourists were rescued by road from Lachung and Lachen valleys in a massive ground operation led by DC Jain. The tourists, including several elderly individuals and children, were safely escorted through challenging terrain and intermittent weather disturbances. File photo NEW DELHI: Surveillance drones, bomb disposal squads and canine teams will be deployed along the two designated routes of the Amarnath Yatra , as part of heightened security measures that also include the highest ever deployment of CRPF personnel for the 38-day event. Nearly 50,000 CRPF personnel, in addition to the J&K police, will fan across the route of the yatra, engaging in road opening (ROP) duties to detect and defuse IEDs, besides having quick action teams stationed at vantage points. All approach roads and routes to the national highway will be blocked when the yatri convoys, escorted by CRPF troops who will be equipped with satellite phones, will pass through. All convoys will have jammers. The Amarnath yatra, which is much shorter than its 52-day edition last year, comes in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which killed 25 tourists and a local, and led to retaliatory strikes on terror bases in Pakistan as part of Operation Sindoor. Drones will keep an eye on any suspicious movement along the yatra routes — both through Pahalgam and Baltal — and quick action teams will swoop in to neutralise such elements before they can strike. CRPF is already providing security to the Chenab and Anji rail bridges in J&K. Joint police control rooms will be set up along the two Amarnath pilgrimage routes for enhanced coordination among the security agencies and forces, to immediately resolve issues faced by the yatris. There will be mountain rescue teams as well to aid the yatris. Another security measure on the table is to have plain-clothed security personnel as 'marshals' in the buses carrying the yatris.

Chaos at Hasanpura side entry to Jaipur Junction amid construction, lax security

However, ongoing remodelling work has turned the entry and exit from this side into a major inconvenience for passengers. Access from the Hasanpura side is via a service lane leading to a foot-overbridge that connects to various platforms. With the lane closed for construction, vehicles are being directed to take the wrong side of the road to reach the station, creating confusion and safety concerns. When TOI visited the spot Friday, several passengers expressed frustration over the lack of clear signage and safe access. While X-ray baggage scanners at the entry were functional, there was no deployment of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, raising further security concerns. "For trains arriving or departing from platforms 4 and 5, the Hasanpura side is the most convenient entry point. I went there this morning, but the service lane was closed due to construction. I was asked to drive on the wrong side to reach the station. I had to drop my daughter for the double-decker train—it was chaotic. "I live in Sodala, and this side is the easiest for me. But because of the construction and lack of clear directions, there wasn't a single autorickshaw or mode of transport available here. If the railways have opened this entry, they should ensure it's fully functional," said Ramesh Singh, a passenger who arrived from Jodhpur Friday. Expressing frustration, passengers said the railways should properly inform the public if an entry point is blocked. "When we come to board a train, we usually keep a buffer of 15 to 20 minutes. But with issues like this, it creates panic," said Ramesh Saini, who was dropped near the closed service lane by an autorickshaw and had to walk nearly a kilometre to reach the foot-overbridge from the Hasanpura side. When contacted, Captain Shashi Kiran, chief public relations officer of North Western Railways, said, "If passengers are facing this issue, we will inspect the spot and take necessary steps to clear the bottlenecks and ensure the entry is properly accessible."
