Iconic Englewood pizzeria's future uncertain after 64 years in business

ENGLEWOOD Colo, (KDVR) — A popular Englewood pizzeria that has served families for 64 years soon has to close their doors and find a new location.
The owners of 'Frank the Pizza King' say they have rented the building for more than six decades on South Broadway. Now it has been sold and the new property owners made it clear they'll have to leave.

'The pizza is great,' said regular Misty Steinhauer.
She's talking about the food at the popular Frank the Pizza King.
'303-789 2279. that's the number I have memorized to order this pizza,' said customer Steven Laflar.
He would know because he has been ordering his favorite meal since 1983.
'I get a coke and a 10-inch sausage since I started getting pizza here,' he said.
'I was in a little walker running through the kitchen,' said co-owner Matt Krascek. '64 years ago my grandfather started the business when he came to America. He immigrated from Italy.'
Since then Frank the Pizza King has started sharing his recipes with the community.
Krascek's family has called the building home for more than six decades. Last week he learned the new owners have different plans for the only place his family has known.

'Our old owner contacted us on Thursday and said he was getting ready to accept the offer for the new owners to take over and they want us to evacuate,' he said.
He created a post on Facebook announcing the news. It garnered a lot of attention.
'This is one of those places that just feel like home,' said Steven. 'I'm super bummed.'
Customers started a petition that now has more than 1,700 signatures with people hoping the popular pizzeria will stay.
'It's meant a lot and really shows how much Frank means to this community,' said Krascek.
While the future of the generational business is uncertain, Krascek wants his faithful customers to know one thing.
'We love you, you're a part of the Franks family and you always will be. The Krascek family and our employees are so grateful for you. Grateful for the 64 years you've been with us,' Krascek said.

Krascek has not yet had a conversation with the new owners but hopes the petition will help them see how much this place means to the community. Right now there's no official date set for the closure.
'If you want to come in come in as soon as possible because we're not sure how much longer we'll be here.' said Krascek.'Come enjoy it and be a part of the family one more time.'
FOX31 also reached out to the owner but did not immediately receive a response.

Xcel Energy's 2025-2027 wildfire mitigation plan approved

DENVER (KDVR) — Xcel Energy's wildfire mitigation plan, which expands work and programs to reduce wildfire risk, was approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, the company announced Friday. The plan was approved on Thursday, and Xcel Energy-Colorado president Robert Kenney said it allows the company to implement projects to protect customers and communities from the risk of wildfire. 'We worked closely with a large coalition of stakeholders representing customers, businesses, government and agencies to put forth a plan designed to keep our customers and communities safe, while keeping bills low,' Kenney said. Xcel said the 2025-2027 Wildfire Mitigation Plan outlines goals and reporting methods to better communicate the mitigation work with customers and communities, including during events like public safety power shutoffs to prevent potential ignitions from energized electrical facilities. Previous: Boulder enters agreement with Xcel Energy to quicken wildfire safety upgrades Here are the proposed investments and improvements that Xcel listed: Greater Situational Awareness: Implementing advanced fire modeling and analysis tools, adding weather stations and tripling AI cameras for early smoke detection. Technology-Enabled Inspections: Accelerating inspections in wildfire risk areas using aerial and drone methods. Infrastructure Improvements: Multi-year program to upgrade equipment, underground power lines and rebuild transmission lines. Vegetation Management: Expanding efforts in high-risk areas with new standards for inspections and pruning. Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings: Increasing remote safety settings, sectionalizing lines and adding new technology. Public Safety Power Shutoff Program: Providing interactive outage maps, proposing a backup energy rebate and improving customer support and communication. Organizational Growth: Expanding the Wildfire Risk team by improving capabilities in meteorology, fire science, risk management and analytics. 'This is a significant step toward making our community safer and more resilient in the face of growing wildfire threats,' said Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde, City of Boulder City Manager. 'With the Public Utilities Commission's approval, we're thrilled to see this plan move forward. I am proud of the work our city team did to ensure the voices of our community—and our neighboring communities—were heard and to help shape a plan that better protects the people and places most at risk.' The company said the plan is also designed to keep customer bills low by 'securitizing eligible company investments.' Xcel said the plan was verbally approved and the PUC is expected to release a written decision later this summer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. My father-in-law, Frank Noble, retired at the age of 55 after a successful career in forestry in Australia. At 86, he's now been retired for roughly the same amount of time as he worked. He said that if given his time again, he'd still follow the same path and choose to retire early. After chatting with him about his decision, I learned key lessons I plan to follow now that I'm 40 and working to plan my retirement. Related video Own your home outright and have several private investments before retiring One key thing that made Frank's early retirement much easier was that he owned his home outright before he retired. He sold his family home in Tyers and bought his current place — a more affordable one in Bright — in cash so he didn't need to take on a mortgage. My husband and I would like to be in the same mortgage-free position by the time we retire. We currently have two investment properties that we're paying off, and we may sell one or both in the long run in order to pay for our future "forever" home in cash. Frank also attributed his successful retirement to having private investments on top of his pension. We've also started investing in shares and reinvesting the dividends in order to build long-term wealth. Stay active My father-in-law grows his own vegetables. Courtesy Frank Noble My father-in-law is extremely fit, and people often remark that it's hard to believe he's approaching 90. At 86, he still goes to the gym three days a week, spends hours in his garden each day, and chops all of his own wood for the winter months. All in all, he just stays moving. I was reminded of Frank recently while reading a great book called "Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life." In it, the authors talk about how water moves and is at its best when it flows and doesn't stagnate, and how the human body is the same. That analogy resonated with me and reminds me of Frank: As you age, it's important to keep moving each day in order to keep your body running for a long time. I plan to follow his lead and focus on working out and staying active as I age — if I can stay in good health, retiring early will be far more enjoyable. Related stories Business Insider tells the innovative stories you want to know Business Insider tells the innovative stories you want to know Have hobbies that inspire you My father-in-law found joy in gardening, going to the gym, and playing golf when he retired. He's also travelled with my mother-in-law throughout Australia and overseas. Frank said all of these hobbies and passion pursuits have given him a much-needed sense of adventure and purpose in retirement. It's inspiring that he follows his passions and I feel lucky that one of mine, writing, is also what I do for a living. When I retire, I plan to continue spending most of my time writing — hopefully even a few novels. I also enjoy travel, so I plan for that to be a big part of our retirement (money permitting). Nurture your relationship with your spouse My kids are so important, but so is my relationship with my husband. Melissa Noble Frank told me it's crucial to have a solid relationship with your partner if you plan to retire early, as you'll spend a lot of time with them. He and my mother-in-law have been married for almost 60 years and still spend almost all day every day together. I love my husband dearly and he's my best friend, but I'm guilty of focusing a lot of my time and energy on our three young children. My husband tends to be at the bottom of the pyramid in our household. After chatting to Frank, I know I want to make some changes with our relationship, and to make my husband more of a priority. To start, maybe we'll plan more date nights or take time to map out our retirement goals together. At the end of the day, the kids will move out some day, and it will just be him and I, so we need to keep the magic alive.
