Mobile mayoral candidate Spiro Cheriogotis takes a sizeable lead in campaign contributions
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Spiro Cheriogotis extended his financial advantage over Mobile's five other mayoral candidates last month, according to campaign finance filings with the Alabama Secretary of State. Orange Beach Billfish Classic ends with record purse Cheriogotis, a former Mobile County District Judge, received cash contributions of $231,000 in May, three times more than the next candidate was able to raise, and more than the other five candidates combined. County Commissioner Connie Hudson received cash contributions of $75,200. Former Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine raised $40,900. State Representative Barbara Drummond received $29,300 in cash donations. Former City Councilman Jermaine Burrell raised $22,300. Former Police Chief Lawrence Battiste received $1,750 in cash donations. With the election 11 weeks out, Cheriogotis has almost more cash on hand than his five opponents combined. His campaign balance at the end of May was $676,400. Hudson had $397,600 on hand, Drummond $129,200, Burrell $75,700, Prine $69,100 and Battiste $5,700. Hudson carried over $158,000 from her last campaign for County Commissioner. Drummond brought $30,000 from her State Representative campaign balance. Baldwin County's first Safe Haven baby box blessed in Daphne Cheriogotis has been endorsed by outgoing Mayor Sandy Stimpson who is not running for a fourth four-year term. West Wildwood police getting help from neighboring New Jersey departments amid staff shortage
Multiple South Jersey police departments are providing support services to West Wildwood as the town deals with a staffing shortage among its own force. Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said he asked the Wildwood, North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest departments to "provide necessary manpower and resources" to keep police services in West Wildwood running, and that all agreed to help. "Their commitment to public service and regional cooperation is a reflection of the strong law enforcement community we have in Cape May County," Sutherland said in a statement. The temporary measure comes after West Wildwood made significant staffing changes to its police force back in January. Since then, the department became the subject of a review by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. In a report published earlier this month, the NJSACOP said there is "a complete lack of leadership" in the Borough of West Wildwood Police Department, the force's Internal Affairs is "essentially non-existent," training is lacking among officers and high police officer turnover is contributing to the agency's instability. The report made several recommendations about how the borough could move forward. One option would see West Wildwood invest in recruitment and retention to maintain an independent force. Other options include: Entering into a shared service agreement where West Wildwood shares a police chief with another municipality Entering a shared service agreement with another town to supply partial police services at night Disbanding the West Wildwood Police Department and entering into a contract with another jurisdiction The NJSACOP said it recommends disbanding the force altogether. "Our review demonstrates that geographically and financially this would be the best option. We also believe it would provide uninterrupted services to the Borough and its residents," the report said. "NJSACOP also believes it will provide a better service due to officer availability and enhanced patrol and investigative resources." According to the report, the 2020 Census counted approximately 540 residents in West Wildwood, though the population swells to about 5,000 during the summer season. As recently as April 28, 2025, the town's police department had just four full-time officers and one Special Law Enforcement Class II officer on its staff. In January, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office assigned Detective Mark Weeks to temporarily oversee the day-to-day operations of the department prior to the departure of Chief Jacquelyn Ferentz.

Second arrest made in Hickory Hill gas station shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A second arrest has been made in a Hickory Hill gas station shooting that left a man and a juvenile critically injured last month. Kevon Chapman, 18, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday. Chapman is charged with attempted first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and possession of a firearm by a dangerous felon. ► ORIGINAL STORY: Two injured in Hickory Hill gas station shooting On May 29, Memphis Police say they responded to the Circle K gas station on 6193 Mount Moriah Road Extended regarding a shooting call. A male victim was found sitting in he driver's seat of a Corolla suffering from a gunshot wound to his left hand and face. A juvenile victim was later found after he ran from the Corolla during the shooting. Police say the male juvenile was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left leg and abrasions to his face. They were both taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police say one of the victims is still in the hospital in critical condition and unable to speak. They say he was shot in his lower jaw and that the bullet travelled into his neck with a bullet remaining near his carotid artery. Arrest made in gas station shooting that left 2 injured On June 2, during a follow-up, one of the victims told investigators that the other victim had picked him up, and they were at the Circle K gas station when an unknown man approached them. The unknown man is accused of talking to the victims and getting into the backseat of their car. That is when he allegedly showed the victims a black gun, demanding items from a blue duffle bag inside the vehicle. All three began fighting over the bag and the suspect's gun, as one of the victims drove out of the parking lot. At that time, the suspect shot at both victims multiple times before taking off on foot. The suspect, identified as Kevon Chapman, was positively identified in a six-person photographic display and taken into custody on June 11. Another suspect involved in this case, 21-year-old Tariq Robinson, was arrested on June 3. Kevon Chapman is due in court on Friday morning. His bond has yet to be set.
