Iraq, ILO work towards generating large-scale job opportunities

Iraqi News20-05-2025

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Planning, in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO), held an extended consultation workshop on Wednesday as a crucial step toward creating large-scale employment opportunities and fostering long-term socioeconomic growth.
The workshop was intended to study strategies for creating and executing a National Public Works Program (NPWP) in Iraq, according to a statement released by the ILO.
The initiative is part of the ministry's larger attempts to link employment policies with social protection and climate change plans by investing in labor-intensive projects that potentially provide significant job opportunities.
The strategy focuses on vulnerable labor market groups, such as job searchers enrolled in the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs' database and social protection network beneficiaries.
The workshop concluded with several practical proposals, including finalizing the National Roadmap for the Public Works Program, which covers design, finance, governance, and execution mechanisms; launching prototype projects in solar energy, afforestation, construction, and digital infrastructure; increasing the capacity of local actors, partner institutions, and beneficiaries; and fortifying collaborations with civil society and the commercial sector.
This workshop is part of the Building Equitable and Inclusive Transformation (BEIT) project, which is funded by the European Union and seeks to accelerate economic growth in Iraq by generating considerable employment opportunities, expanding affordable and sustainable housing projects, and improving the construction sector.

Egyptian firms discuss natural gas developments in Iraq

Baghdad ( – Egypt-based Modern Gas and Alexandria Petroleum Maintenance Company (Petromaint), a prominent provider of oil and gas services in Egypt, engaged in discussions with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil regarding potential participation in natural gas network projects for power plants, brick industries, and cement plants in Iraq. Mohamed Qandil, Chairman and Managing Director of Modern Gas, and Ibrahim Motawea, Chairman and Managing Director of Petromaint, met with Ezzat Saber, the Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil for Gas Affairs, on the sidelines of the inaugural edition of the Iraq Oil and Gas Technology Exhibition (OiGatech 2025), held recently at Baghdad International Fairground in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to Egypt Oil & Gas. The two parties discussed supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to residential areas, buildings, and hotels, aiming to maximize the use of the significant quantities of available LNG. These negotiations are in line with the Iraqi government's ambitious growth plan for residential complexes, which aims to build one million housing units. This proposal calls for the construction of an underground LNG network system with central stations, which will include phases such as design, installation, operation, and maintenance. Additionally, to improve the environment and reduce carbon emissions while also increasing output through the reuse of available resources, the meeting addressed options for collaboration on the utilization of flared gas.

Iraq carries out promising projects to stop gas flaring

Baghdad ( – Iraq is carrying out ambitious projects to reduce gas flaring associated with oil operations, achieve self-sufficiency in gas, and meet the fuel demands of multiple industries and power plants. The Iraqi Ministry of Oil has significantly increased its utilization of associated gas from 53 percent to 70 percent. Iraq has successfully increased its dry gas production from 1.3 billion standard cubic feet per day to 1.8 billion standard cubic feet per day. This achievement is the result of several promising projects carried out by local companies in collaboration with specialized foreign firms. Eliminating gas flaring in Iraq is an essential aspect of Baghdad's goals to attain self-sufficiency and lower its import costs, as well as meet its climate pledges. To meet growing demand and limit imports, the Iraqi government plans to reduce the amount of gas it unproductively flares by approximately 20 percent in 2025. The government's strategy intends to cease gas flaring in oil fields over the coming few years and achieve a production rate of three billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030. Amid plans to stop gas flaring in oil fields by the end of 2028, the government's plans include converting flared gas into clean energy to support power plants and related industries, as well as protecting the environment and public health, in accordance with Iraq's international commitments, including the 2016 Paris Agreement to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
