Smart meter rollout threatens countryside with ‘oppressive' 40ft masts
A nationwide rollout of smart meters threatens to clutter the countryside with 40-foot poles.
Water companies are preparing to install dedicated wireless networks to transmit the readings of a planned 10m devices that will collect live data on household and business water usage.
Under the proposals, the so-called 'telemetry' poles will appear in already-crowded streets to handle the data, with companies exploiting planning rules brought in by the last government that effectively allow poles to be put up with little or no consultation or warnings for residents.
Regions already hit by the new devices include the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, in Northumberland, where 20 planning applications, each for multiple poles, have been lodged to support Northumbrian Water's smart meter programme.
The plans have generated a wave of objections, with locals complaining of 'an unsightly clutter of overbearing poles' that it is claimed will be 'obstructing natural light and creating an oppressive outlook'.
Similar schemes are also generating fury further south. Essex and Suffolk Water intends to put up an initial 157 poles in Great Yarmouth alone, with plans for hundreds more around the region.
Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, told a council meeting: 'I'm seriously concerned because this isn't just Great Yarmouth going to get hit, but all the major towns, all the villages are going to get these telegraph poles put up.'
Anglian Water, which provides water for the rest of Norfolk, has also been installing pillars to monitor smart meter usage. The plan has infuriated Norfolk County Council, which argued that existing networks should have been used rather than putting up scores of new poles.
Ptolemy Dean, official Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey, and author of Streetscapes, on the evolution of street architecture, said the water metering poles would be an aesthetic disaster for Britain's towns and villages.
He said: 'This is a nasty, cheap short-term fix that will damage public spaces and devalue the homes of people living nearby.'
The main contractor putting up the poles is Hull-based Connexin, which is already working for multiple water companies.
A spokesman said thousands more poles were needed around the UK. 'Water companies need data and this is the best way to collect it,' he said.
Connexin is exploiting 'permitted development' planning rules brought in by the last government that effectively allow the company to erect poles wherever it wants with little or no consultation or warnings for residents.
Under UK planning law telecoms poles which are less than 15 metres high are included under permitted development so there is no need for planning permission.
Connexin's spokesman said: 'We would like to install the wireless routers on existing infrastructure but there is often nothing suitable. It is frustrating for the owners of nearby properties but we are erecting them under permitted development rules which allow us to do that.'
Ofwat, the water regulator, which is strongly in favour of smart meters, distanced itself from the row.
A spokesman said: 'Water companies are responsible for installing their own equipment and technology and following their local authorities' rules and regulations.
'It is not for Ofwat the economic water regulator to determine how and where poles are installed locally.'

2025 Jaguar F-PACE Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims
If you've ever been attracted to the F-Pace's curves and snarling exhaust note, act now because it's not clear how much longer the model will remain in the lineup. As Jaguar shifts even further upmarket and makes the leap to an all-electric product strategy, this is likely the final model year of the F-Pace. The 2025 Jaguar F-Pace challenges rivals such as the BMW X3, Genesis GV70, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. What's New On the cusp of discontinuation, the Jaguar F-Pace enters 2025 with a few updates. The Driver Intelligence package receives a 360-degree camera and an automated parking assist system The F-Pace SVR receives a new P575 badge and an output bump to 567 hp, an increase of 25 hp over the prior model year What We Think As Jaguar's rebranding continues, the F-Pace lingers as the automaker's only model for 2025. The compact luxury SUV, which was originally introduced for 2017 and was most recently refreshed for 2021, is showing its age. The exterior styling and cabin layout remain attractive, but we'd be hoping for a total redesign for 2026 if Jaguar hadn't already confirmed the F-Pace's discontinuation. There are plenty of reasons why you might want to snap up an F-Pace before it's gone. The available turbocharged and electric supercharged inline-six makes use of mild hybrid assistance. Not only does this P400 version of the F-Pace sound sweet and deliver power smoothly, it has sharp steering and nimble handling. Braking feel and off-road capability are other positive attributes. Stepping up to the SVR model swaps the I-6 for a supercharged V-8 with a delectable engine note and outrageous power output. The six- and eight-cylinder F-Paces deliver a great driving experience, but we recommend forgoing the forgettable base engine. Inside the SUV, the infotainment system isn't as user friendly as the touchscreens found in the competition. Pricing is another issue; Jaguar charges a pretty penny for the privilege of driving its only model. Ultimately, the cost is worth it if you're able to spring for the I-6 and V-8 variants—the F-Pace remains an attractive and fun-to-drive alternative. Performance and MPGs The 2025 Jaguar F-Pace carries over with the same trio of powertrains as 2024, although the range-topping SVR model gets a power bump as a farewell present for the compact luxury SUV. All models continue to receive a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The base F-Pace P250 comes equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-four developing 247 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0-60 mph requires 6.9 seconds, which is somewhat sluggish for the segment. The EPA rates the 2025 F-Pace P250 at 22/27 mpg city/highway. The mild-hybrid F-Pace P400 uses a turbocharged and electrically supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine developing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph falls to 5.9 seconds, which is much more acceptable for a vehicle in the F-Pace's competitive class. Fuel economy is pegged at 19/25 mpg. At the top of the trim walk is the F-Pace SVR P575, which develops 567 hp for the 2025 model year. That's an increase of 25 hp over the 2024 F-Pace SVR. Torque remains the same at 516 lb-ft. Jaguar claims the updated SVR model can sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. That acceleration comes courtesy of a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine, so its thirstiness is reflected in the EPA's rating of 15/21 mpg. 2025 F-Pace SVR 575 Edition In addition to its 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine, the F-Pace SVR 575 Edition receives other upgrades to reinforce its status as one of Jaguar's Special Vehicle Racing models. Model-specific features include bigger brakes, an active electronic differential, torque vectoring by braking, adaptive suspension damping, sticky low-profile summer tires, and selectable drive modes. These are just the type of enhancements drivers expect from a super SUV capable of attaining a 178-mph top speed. Supercharged V-8 engines are on the verge of extinction, so this last-chance version of the F-Pace is also a rare opportunity to drive a rapid SUV like this. Safety Features Jaguar outfits every 2025 F-Pace with the same basic advanced safety features including: Automatic emergency braking Blind-spot assistance Driver condition monitoring Lane keeping assistance Front and rear parking sensors Rear traffic monitoring Traffic sign assistance Jaguar also makes adaptive cruise standard across the entire F-Pace lineup. SVR models get a standard 360-degree camera. Cargo Space and Interior Room The 2025 Jaguar F-Pace is on the larger side of the compact luxury SUV class. Second-row legroom is ample for adults and flipping down the rear seats opens up plentiful storage space. Technology Every 2025 Jaguar F-Pace receives a standard 11.4-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and a 12-speaker premium sound from Meridian. Jaguar offers other available tech such as a Wi-Fi hot spot and a head-up display. Value Recommended Trim Jaguar continues to offer the 2025 F-Pace in R-Dynamic S P250, R-Dynamic S P400, and SVR P575 variants. And although we'd love to have a 567-hp SVR 575 Edition F-Pace in our driveway, the F-Pace R-Dynamic S P400 is the one that makes more financial sense. Balancing strong acceleration and engaging handling with sensible fuel economy, the inline-six version of the F-Pace starts just under $70,000. If any version of the F-Pace appeals to you, however, head to a dealership now. As Jaguar rebrands, the F-Pace is getting discontinued after the 2025 model year. Shares for Dr. Martens Plc surged nearly 24 percent on Thursday following the release of a new strategic turnaround plan in efforts to return to profit growth in fiscal 2026. According to chief executive officer Ije Nwokorie, who took the helm earlier this year, the company's 'single focus' in fiscal 2025 was to bring stability back to Dr. Martens. In fiscal 2025, the UK-based footwear company reported that net revenue fell 10 percent to 787.6 million pounds from 877.1 million in fiscal 2024. Dr. Martens noted that the results were in-line with guidance, however, and came up against a challenging macroeconomic and consumer backdrop in several of its core markets. Net debt for the year was 249.5 million pounds, down from 359.8 million pounds in fiscal 2024. Net profit stood at 4.5 million pounds in the year to the end of March, down from 69.2 million pounds the year prior. By category, overall, pairs were down 9 percent, with DTC pairs flat and wholesale pairs down 15 percent as expected, as the company's wholesale partners normalized their inventory levels. 'We saw a very strong performance in shoes, with DTC pairs up 15 percent with particular success in our bestselling Adrian loafer, as well as in new shoe families, the Lowell and Buzz,' the company said in its latest earnings statement. 'Sandals also saw a good performance, with DTC pairs up 7 percent, and we continue to see a strong performance in our mules range, led by the Zebzag. Boots remained challenging, with DTC pairs down 9 percent, with our continuity boots weaker, as expected. This was partially offset by success in product newness, both as extensions of the core icons, for example through the Ambassador soft leather boot and through new product lines such as the Anistone biker boot.' As a proportion of fiscal year 2025 Group revenue, boots accounted for 57 percent, shoes 26 percent, sandals 12 percent and bags & other 5 percent. By channel, direct-to-consumer revenue was down 4.2 percent to 510.7 million pounds in fiscal 2025, while wholesale fell 19.5 percent to 276.9 million pounds, as expected. Within DTC, retail revenue was down 5.6 percent to 242.4 million pounds and e-commerce was down 2.9 percent to 268.3 million pounds. By region, EMEA revenue was down 11.0 percent to 384.2 million pounds for the year, which was driven by the UK. In the Americas, revenue was down 11.4 percent to 288.5 million pounds, and in APAC, revenue dipped 3.8 percent to 114.9 million pounds, with a good performance in Japan and China, the company noted. Looking closer at the Americas, Dr. Martens stated that the region delivered DTC growth in the second half of fiscal 2025 as the company pivoted its marketing to 'relentlessly focus' on product. 'With new products such as Ambassador, Anistone, Buzz and Dunnet Flower performing very strongly for us and our partners; we delivered 25 million pounds of annualized cost savings, at the top end of our target, with the full benefit in fiscal 2026; and we strengthened our balance sheet through a significant reduction in inventory and net debt, as well as the successful refinancing of the Group,' the company said. As for tariffs, the company noted that the entirety of its spring/summer 2025 stock is already in the market, and by the start of July, the majority of autumn/winter 2025 will be either in the market or in transit. 'We generate strong product gross margins, which is helpful given that tariffs are charged on cost, not retail price,' the company stated. 'We will continue to assess the situation carefully, but can confirm that for SS25 and AW25 we will be keeping average prices unchanged in the market. More broadly, we continue to manage all costs tightly, working closely with our wholesale and supplier partners.' The company also released a new strategic plan on Thursday. Dubbed 'Levers For Growth,' Dr. Martens said that the plan builds on the work undertaken in fiscal 2025 to stabilize the business. The new plan focuses on four 'levers' including engaging more consumers, driving more product purchase occasions, curating market-right distribution, and simplifying the operating model. Dr. Martens said that the new strategy capitalizes on the strengths of its business, including its 'iconic global brand, high quality products, world-class supply chain, modern technology systems, committed wholesale and distributor partners and passionate and talented team,' and taps into the significant new markets and profit pools that are available to the company. Over the medium-term, Dr. Martens said it expects to deliver sustainable, profitable revenue growth above the rate of the relevant footwear market, with operating leverage driving a mid to high-teens EBIT margin and underpinned by strong cash generation. 'Levers For Growth will increase our opportunities by shifting the business from a channel-first to a consumer-first mindset,' Nwokorie said. 'We will give more people more reasons to buy more of our products, whether that's our iconic boots and shoes, newer product families such as Zebzag and Buzz, or adjacent categories such as sandals, bags and leather goods. And we will tailor distribution to each market, blending DTC and B2B, optimizing brand reach and ensuring a better use of capital.' The CEO added that he is 'laser focused' on day-to-day execution, managing costs and maintaining the company's operational discipline while it navigates the current macroeconomic uncertainties. Xiaomi's Budget Tablet Costs Under $230 But Offers 2.5K Display With Stylus Support
Redmi Pad 2 Xiaomi released a couple of very powerful and capable tablets earlier this year, and the Beijing-headquartered tech giant is back with a budget tablet that's officially priced in the U.K. starting at £169, which converts to around $228. This is about as low a price as possible for what is essentially a portable computer from a major tech brand (there are even cheaper tablets out there, but from obscure Shenzhen OEMs). And as usual, Redmi is giving you better specs than the price point may suggest. For example, the 11-inch display is just an LCD panel, not OLED like pricier smartphones, but it is a 2560 X 1600 resolution panel, which puts its resolution at 2.5K. It also features a refresh rate of 90Hz. Getting such pixel density and refresh rate above 60Hz at this price point is a welcome surprise. The 500 nits display The tablet also packs a 9,000 mAh battery that is considered large for an 11-inch device that's only 8.33mm thick. This is enough juice to power the tablet for over a dozen hours if you're just streaming videos or on social media. Gaming, however, will drain it fast, so your mileage will vary. The processor, MediaTek Helio G100 Ultra, is an entry level silicon, but it does offer eight-cores and was just introduced last August, so it's relatively new technology. For typical social media and productivity use, this chip is more than enough. If you're editing videos or playing heavy games, expect some stutters. There's a single 8-megapixel camera that, again, is acceptable at this tablet's price point, but otherwise not a camera most would want to use for anything other than the most basic use (like maybe scanning documents). Redmi Pad 2 supports stylus The quad speakers are solid for the tablet's price point, but of course sound a bit flat to my ears, which are used to superior speakers from Xiaomi's higher tier tablets or Apple's iPad. the Redmi Pad 2 with optional accessories Xiaomi apparently did not design a keyboard for this tablet, instead, optional accessories include a folio cover that doubles as a kickstand (as seen in above photo) and a stylus. Pen input works as advertised, without very jarring latency, but there's no place to house the stylus with the tablet, which is annoying. The tablet also has an 8MP camera There's also a slightly pricier model with 4G SIM card connectivity, which starts at around $295. At these prices, the Redmi Pad 2 is clearly aiming at someone on a tighter budget, and I think it gets the job done. Especially for parents of young children who may want a tablet for their child without spending too much, this is worth a look.
