Two dead, hundreds arrested and cars set on fire in France following Champions League final
TWO PEOPLE DIED, hundreds were arrested and cars were set ablaze in France overnight as football fans celebrated Paris Saint-Germain's stunning Champions League final victory last night, the French interior ministry said today.
The epicentre of the euphoria was in Paris, which was a theatre of car horns, cheers, singing in the street and fireworks throughout the night following PSG's 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan in Munich.
The ministry said 491 people were arrested in the capital when crowds converged on the Champs-Elysees avenue and clashes broke out with officers.
Across France as a whole, including Paris, a total of 559 people were arrested, it added.
The two deaths occurred as the celebrations took place.
A man riding a motor scooter in Paris died after being hit by a car in the city's southern 15th arrondissement located just a couple of kilometres away from the Champs-Elysees.
In the southwestern town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed at a gathering feting the PSG victory, prosecutors said.
His death occurred 'during the celebrations', but the prosecutor's office said it did not know whether it was directly related to the Champions League final. It added that the perpetrator was 'on the run'.
The interior ministry said that 18 police officers in Paris were injured, along with three elsewhere in France, as were 192 people celebrating in the streets. Seven fire-service personnel were also hurt.
It said that 692 fires were reported through the night, including 264 cars that were set ablaze.
Victory parade
The PSG team are due to hold a victory parade on the Champs-Elysees today, with tens of thousands of supporters expected to gather to catch a glimpse of their returning heroes.

Overnight, AFP journalists saw police on the famed thoroughfare using a water cannon to stop a crowd reaching the Arc de Triomphe, which sits at the top of the Champs-Elysees.
Police, in a statement, said 'troublemakers' clashed with officers 'by throwing large fireworks and other objects'. One policeman was in an induced coma after being hit in the eye by a firework in the Normandy region, prosecutors said.
Elsewhere, police said a car careered into fans celebrating PSG's win in Grenoble in southeastern France, leaving four people injured, two of them seriously. All of those hurt were from the same family, police said.
The driver handed himself in to the police and was placed under arrest. A source close to the investigation said it was believed the driver had not acted intentionally. The public prosecutor's office said the driver had tested negative for alcohol and drugs.
The majority of fans celebrated peacefully, but police in Paris said scuffles broke out near the Champs-Elysees avenue, and around PSG's Parc des Princes stadium, where 48,000 had watched the match on giant screens.
Most of those arrested in the capital were suspected of illegally possessing fireworks and causing disorder, police said.
The PSG victory meant the club won the biggest prize in European club football for the first time in their history.
One 20-year-old PSG supporter, Clement, said: 'It's so good and so deserved! We have a song that talks about our struggles and it hasn't always been easy.
'But we got our faith back this year with a team without stars. They're 11 guys who play for each other.'
French President Emmanuel Macron's office said he would host the victorious players on Sunday to congratulate them.
In a message on X, Macron hailed a 'day of glory for PSG'.
Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo hailed it as a 'historic' win.
A total of 11.5 million people tuned in across France to watch the match, according to figures given by the Mediametrie audience-measurement company and one of the broadcasters, Canal+.

I held hand of Scottish gangster as he lay dying after Costa del Sol shooting
A British nurse has recounted the harrowing moment she comforted a dying Scottish gangster after he was shot in a brutal double murder on the Costa del Sol. The woman, in her 50s, was enjoying a drink with her partner at a nearby pub when masked assailant fatally shot Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr amidst shocked holidaymakers. The attack occurred at Monaghans bar in Fuengirola around 11.30pm on Saturday, just as the Champions League final concluded. The nurse, who wished to remain anonymous, described how she sprang into action upon hearing the gunfire: "I was sitting with my partner in a pub when we heard one shot followed by a gap and then four more shots. We all ran into the bar and I was shouting 'get inside'." She continued, explaining the initial confusion: "At the time they were celebrating the football because the game had just ended. Someone said a person had been shot and because I'm a nurse I ran to Monaghans bar to see if I could help." Spanish TV has since aired graphic footage of Monaghan attempting to flee his assassin. The video, taken shortly after Lyons Jnr, 46, was slain outside the establishment, captures Monaghan, aged 43, bleeding through his white T-shirt from a chest injury, trying to steady himself on a table before collapsing. Surveillance footage from the scene shows the killer, clad in black, pursuing Monaghan. Two individuals, believed to be a waitress and another man also in black, are seen fleeing from the gunman, reports the Mirror. The nurse recounted the harrowing scene, saying: "I got to the first person who was lying on his back on the terrace who I later discovered was Eddie Lyons Jnr. He was clearly dead and had what appeared to be a bullet wound in his chest and one in his abdomen. A bar lady told me there was another one in the bar." Describing the second victim, she said: "The other man, Ross, had one shot in his chest, just on the right side. He was lying on the floor and was still alive but his breathing was laboured. He was wearing a white T-shirt and shorts and trainers and he looked younger than 43." She detailed the grim aftermath: "There was blood everywhere, on the floor and around the service hatch to the kitchen. There was nothing I could do, he wasn't bleeding from his mouth so I just held his hand, stroked his hair and waited for the emergency services." It emerged that Monaghan had an exit wound in his back where the bullet had passed through his body. The nurse noted that armed police were first to respond, moving him into the recovery position and then administering CPR. Monaghan, reportedly the bar's owner, was implicated in the 2010 murder of Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll in Robroyston, Glasgow, although charges against him were eventually dropped. After surviving a shooting in Glasgow in 2017, Monaghan moved to Spain. Spanish authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the double homicide at the pub in Fuengirola. A spokesperson stated on Monday: "The investigation is continuing into the fatal shooting of two men at a pub in Fuengirola, with nothing new at the moment."

French Open: Jannik Sinner marches on in Paris with drubbing of Russian Andrey Rublev
Ruthlessly efficient from the baseline, the Italian dissected world number 15 Rublev's game in stunning fashion to make light work of the Court Philippe Chatrier night match. The 23-year-old, bidding to win a third successive Grand Slam title after his triumphs in New York and Melbourne, has won 12 out of 12 sets so far on the Parisian clay and is beginning to look unstoppable in his quest for a first French crown. Rublev did not play at all badly, but after failing to convert either of the two break points he had in the opening game he could make little impression. World number one Sinner was at least pushed hard in the third set as Rublev threw caution to the wind but he pounced to break the Russian's serve in the 10th game to stretch his streak of wins in Grand Slams to 18 matches. 'I'm very, very happy because things can turn very quickly in a bad way in best of five sets,' said Sinner, who served a three-month doping ban before returning to action in Rome last month. Rublev had beaten Sinner twice before, including once last year, and also prevailed when the two met at the same stage of the French Open in 2022, albeit when Sinner retired hurt. This time, however, the accuracy and ferocity of Sinner's ground strokes left the Russian scrambling just to try and hang on to his opponent's coat tails. Initially, when Rublev belted away a forehand winner to leave Sinner at 15-40 down in the opening game, it looked like it could be a contest. But the Italian swatted away that early danger before delivering a masterclass for the evening crowd. Only three unforced errors came off his racket in set one and he offered up only a few more in the second as he barely appeared to be breaking sweat. Sinner only had to save one more break point, at 2-2 in the third set, but by that stage the match was already heading for its predictable conclusion. He will have to face a very different sort of test in the quarter-finals when he faces Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik who stunned fifth seed Jack Draper with a spellbinding four-set win.
