Putra Heights fire victims to get RM2,000 rental aid
SHAH ALAM: A total of 396 households affected by the recent fire in Putra Heights will begin receiving three-month rental assistance starting this Thursday, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He added that recovery efforts are ongoing as authorities await Cabinet approval on a proposed home repair plan submitted earlier.
In the meantime, Amirudin said all 396 identified and eligible households will be called in for a briefing and to receive rental aid during a scheduled event this Thursday.
The financial assistance worth RM2,000 per household will be transferred directly into the recipients' bank accounts.
"Once the Cabinet agrees, we will inform everyone. We will gather all the residents this Thursday to distribute the three-month rental assistance. At the same event, we will also provide information on the repair process happening here," he told the media after launching SELKitar programme at Shah Alam Convention Centre.
Amirudin said the authorities have categorised the rebuilding efforts into three distinct groups, which will be explained to residents at the event.
He said the efforts are being made to ensure smooth coordination, as the affected residents are from two separate areas, a village and a residential area, requiring tailored approaches.
"So we need different approaches, and that's why we're reviewing everything thoroughly. That's also why I mentioned we need a week or two," he added.

Meta Bright seeks RM21m in new capital to fuel future energy projects, facilitate debt repayment
MAIN Market-listed diversified conglomerate Meta Bright Group Bhd (formerly Eastland Equity Bhd) has today (June 9) proposed private placement of new shares to raise gross proceeds of up to RM21 mil. The fund-raising exercise will primarily support the group's growing renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) businesses while reducing the group's existing bank borrowings to strengthen its overall financial standing. This proposed private placement which allows the issuance of up to 253 million new shares or 10% of Meta Bright's issued share capital will provide quicker access to capital compared to alternative fund-raising methods while avoiding dilution and costly interest associated with bank financing. Of the RM21 mil to be raised, RM8.75 mil will be channelled into Meta Bright's on-going and future energy-related projects. The group currently manages 28 active solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and four EE projects across various states, including Selangor, Johor, Pahang and Terengganu. These initiatives are integral to Meta Bright's strategy to build sustainable, long-term and recurring revenue streams. Additionally, RM2 mil from the proceeds will be utilised to partially repay a term loan facility, thus reducing interest costs and improving the group's profitability and financial health. Another RM8 mil will be directed towards working capital to support day-to-day operations and providing flexibility for further business expansion. Above all else, the group has also allocated RM2 mil to further develop its money lending business segment which aims to broaden its market reach and enhance income streams. 'This private placement is strategically structured to support our aggressive expansion into the RE and EE sectors with the markets showing strong, sustained growth prospects,' commented Meta Bright's executive director (corporate and strategic planning) Derek Phang Kiew Lim. 'By deploying this capital swiftly and effectively, we expect increased earnings visibility and enhanced profitability in the coming years.' To-date, Meta Bright's RE and EE segments have experienced robust growth with on-going and future contracts demonstrating strong revenue potential. These projects include solar installations for manufacturers, government buildings, worship places and commercial entities. In a way, the private placement exercise is timely as it positions the group to capitalise on Malaysia's ambitious energy transition initiatives outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). 'Reducing debt levels through this exercise will directly benefit our bottom line. Lower financing costs combined with strong recurring income from energy projects will ensure long-term profitability,' justified Phang. 'We are committed to maintaining prudent financial management while actively pursuing sustainable growth opportunities.' At the end of today's (June 9) market trading, Meta Bright was down 0.5 sen or 4% to 12 sen with 120,600 shares, thus valuing the company at RM304 mil. – June 9, 2025

Opposition should acknowledge government's strength and efforts
PADANG RENGAS: Opposition leaders should accept reality and stop making excuses to deny the various positive changes and benefits currently being implemented by the government, said the Finance Minister's political secretary Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim. He dismissed claims that the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, merely looks strong because the opposition is weak. On the contrary, he said the strength of the MADANI Government stems from the hard work of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, as well as the unique multi-ethnic composition of its component parties, all working towards a better future for the country. 'The government has planned various initiatives and strategies, including programmes aimed at laying a strong foundation to revitalise the nation's economy and improve the people's well-being. 'We are not saying everything is perfect, but the government is making efforts to introduce clear policies to enhance public well-being in various areas such as the quality of education, healthcare and equitable direct assistance to the people,' he said. He said this when met by Bernama at the Korban Perdana MADANI Programme and Kenduri Rakyat for the Padang Rengas parliamentary constituency at the Dewan Terbuka Masjid Al-Taufiqiyah Chuar Kati here today. Muhammad Kamil said Anwar and the Cabinet are fully committed to improving the country's economic performance while maintaining political stability. 'We can see the indicators today — such as economic growth, unemployment rate, poverty level, inflation, trade and investment, as well as the country's fiscal position. 'The unemployment rate is stable, and poverty and inflation rates have declined. The Gross Domestic Product and total trade are both expanding, showing that our country is now on the right track,' he said. He added that these achievements prove the effectiveness of the MADANI Government's economic policies and governance in ensuring inclusive and resilient development.

Vietnam top carmaker VinFast's revenue surges as EV deliveries jump
HANOI (Agencies): Vietnam's VinFast said its first-quarter revenue more than doubled as deliveries of its electric vehicles jumped nearly four times in the three-month period. Revenue grew 150% to US$656.5 million in the January-March period compared with analysts' average estimate of US$520 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. The EV startup made the statement at a conference on expanding localization and developing supplier systems that it organised on Monday. Accordingly, the manufacturer will offer a 50% discount on land rental fees for the first three years and 20% for the next five years for businesses that are its suppliers when developing factories at two VinFast complexes in Hai Phong city and Ha Tinh province. In addition to support in terms of premises, VinFast commits to buying its suppliers' all products per plans agreed with them. It will also connect the domestic suppliers with foreign companies according to their demand. "As a result, VinFast's suppliers can receive technology and experience transfer, gradually improve international competitiveness and proactively participate in the global supply chain," it said in a release. The carmaker aims to have the localization rate of its products rise to 80% by 2026. At the end of 2024, Le Ngoc Anh, director of VinFast Vietnam, had disclosed that the localization of its EVs was more than 60%, including the body, engine, roof, and shock absorbers. Compared to internal combustion engine vehicles assembled in Vietnam, this rate is quite high, because the highest localization rate of gasoline and diesel vehicles in the country is about 40%, according to VinFast. The company noted that its method of calculating the localization rate is similar to that of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and other car companies in Vietnam. VinFast was founded in 2017 by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, who is currently the company's CEO. In 2022, it switched to the production and sales of EVs. In 2025, the firm aims to sell 200,000 cars. In the first four months of this year, it sold nearly 44,700 cars, completing about 22.3% of the year's plan and leading the domestic market. In 2024, VinFast reaped over VND44,000 billion ($1.8 billion) in revenue, up 58% from 2023. However, the company suffered a net loss of more than VND77,354 billion (over $3 billion) last year. - Reuters
