Greece holds Georgian suspected of fuelling Chios fire with cigarette
ATHENS, June 25 (Reuters) - Greece has arrested a Georgian woman suspected of discarding a cigarette that helped trigger one of several wildfires razing land and threatening homes on the island of Chios.
Blazes broke out on Chios in the Aegean Sea on Sunday and tore through 10,000 acres of mainly bush and pasture land in three days, Greece's climate crisis and civil protection ministry said on Wednesday.
The Georgian was charged with unintentional arson, two fire brigade officials told Reuters on condition anonymity. Witnesses saw her drop a cigarette, one of the officials said.
There was no official confirmation of the arrest or identity of the suspect.
Though the wildfires were largely contained by Wednesday, hundreds of firefighters remained on Chios to prevent rekindling and bring all fronts under control, the Greek fire brigade said.
At Europe's southernmost tip, Greece is often hit by wildfires during its hot and dry summers, but authorities say the fast-changing climate is fuelling more destructive blazes.
The Greek government has paid hundreds of millions of euros in damages related to extreme weather to households and farmers and to update firefighting equipment.
It has upped firefighter numbers to a record 18,000 this year in anticipation of a challenging fire season. They will be assisted by 294 firefighters from five European countries from July 1 to Sept. 15.

A neo-Nazi allegedly plotted a knife and crossbow attack targeting the Mayor of London, a court heard. Alfie Coleman was arrested by armed police in a Morrisons supermarket car park after he paid £3,500 for what he thought was a gun and ammunition to an undercover officer, the Old Bailey was told. It was the culmination of a 'highly sophisticated operation' in which police and agents from MI5 snared Coleman after agreeing to sell him weaponry, jurors were told. After he was arrested, police discovered an alleged plan for a potential terrorist attack identifying his initial target as the 'Mayor of London house'. The Mayor of London at the time was Sir Sadiq Khan, a position he still holds. The plan also included the postcode of the Lord Mayor of London, who in 2022 was Sir Nicholas Lyons. The court heard that Coleman 'idolised' Thomas Mair, the man who murdered Jo Cox, the late Labour MP, in June 2016. Makarov pistol Opening the prosecution case, Nicholas De La Poer KC said that Coleman had allegedly been speaking to several undercover officers for months prior to his arrest as he tried to buy a gun on various encrypted messaging platforms. Mr De La Poer said an arrangement was eventually made with the undercover officer for the supply of a Makarov pistol, five magazines and 200 rounds of ammunition. Coleman was allegedly told they would be in a Land Rover Discovery in the car park in Stratford, east London. On the morning of Sept 29 2023, the defendant left £3,500 in cash in the front passenger seat footwell and collected the bag of items from the boot. But before he had gone 30 yards, he was confronted by armed counter-terrorism police and arrested, the court was told. Inside the bag, he was carrying what appeared to be a handgun and around 200 rounds of ammunition, jurors heard. Extreme Right-wing ideology While planning a gun attack, Coleman had gathered terrorist information, carried out online research, and written a 'manifesto', jurors were told. Mr De La Poer told jurors: 'The prosecution's case is that Mr Coleman believed in an extreme Right-wing ideology which included idolising the likes of Thomas Mair, the man who murdered the MP, Jo Cox.' He believed in the 'the supremacy of white people and neo-Nazism' and collected a number of documents to help with his attack planning, the prosecutor said. The court heard that the defendant had emailed Patriotic Alternative, the far-Right white supremacist organisation, in July 2021 saying he 'would like to start participating in activism'. In June 2022, the defendant allegedly wrote a plan for a potential terrorist attack, which identified his initial target as the 'Mayor of London house' and included the postcode of the Lord Mayor of London. The note also made reference to what appeared to be a plan to put explosives in a cash machine and listed weapons including knives and crossbows, the court was told. In the event, the plans were abandoned as his thinking developed, jurors heard. The court was told of a file titled 'you can't see me' containing another attack plan, this time to hijack a plane. Mr De La Poer said that in the 'cold light of day' this plan appeared to be 'far-fetched and childish'. France attack plans In the summer of 2023, the defendant allegedly turned his attention to an attack in France and attempted to arrange the purchase of military-grade weaponry there. In a 'diary' document, he allegedly explained he had picked France because it was close to 'all-out race war' and it was 'where I feel most useful and where I can create the biggest impact'. Coleman never travelled to France due to practical difficulties, jurors were told. Two days before he was due to pick up the Makarov and ammunition in Stratford, Coleman allegedly told an online contact: 'Just something has gotta be done, how long can we sit here and talk over the internet.' The same day, Coleman ordered a Gerber Strongarm knife with a 4.8-inch blade online, the court was told. Jurors were told that Coleman accepted he had a significant quantity of extreme Right-wing material and had pleaded guilty to possessing 10 documents which contained information likely to be useful to terrorists. He has also pleaded guilty to attempting to possess both a firearm and ammunition. Coleman, now aged 21, of Great Notley in Essex, has denied preparing acts of terrorism and the trial continues.

Edinburgh school ‘protected' abusers for decades
Merchiston Castle School, which charges annual fees of up to £50,000, issued an 'unreserved apology', with headmaster Jonathan Anderson and Gareth Baird, chairman of the board of governors, describing Lady Smith's report as 'detailed, fair and, at times, a difficult read'. They added: 'It uncovers a history of unacceptable abuse suffered by many former pupils and highlights the enduring impact on their lives decades later. 'To all those who suffered abuse while in the care of Merchiston Castle School, we offer our most sincere and unreserved apology. No child should ever suffer harm, especially not in a place that exists to nurture and educate. Those who were abused by their teachers or their fellow pupils deserved better, and we are truly sorry that they were so badly let down.' The report said indecency occurred from the 1950s to the 2010s, however Lady Smith said that 'by the early 2000s, Merchiston thought itself a leader in the child protection field'. Abusers protected by 'tradition' Lady Smith said that 'references were badly handled and child protection concerns ignored', while voyeurism and indecent assaults were common. She added: 'Abusers, and potential abusers, were sometimes protected by tradition, long service, or governor loyalty.' The findings, part of the inquiry's overall boarding schools case study, found that 'in common with Loretto School, Morrison's Academy, Gordonstoun, and Queen Victoria School, children who boarded at Merchiston were exposed to risks of suffering sexual, physical and emotional abuse'. Lady Smith concluded the two main perpetrators at Merchiston were 'virtually untouchable'. Normalised abusive behaviour She said: 'From the 1950s to the second decade of the 21st century, there was a more or less continuous line of consistent indecency perpetrated by two prolific abusers, Mervyn Preston and James Rainy Brown. 'The former taught the latter, who then returned to Merchiston as a teacher, after which they worked together. 'They engaged in abusive behaviour which became normalised for generations of boys. 'In the cases of both those men, their longstanding service and positions of power in boarding houses rendered them virtually untouchable. 'In total, eight teachers abused children sexually. Seven were male and one was female. 'Conduct included voyeurism, encouraging nudity, indecent exposure, indecent assaults, and in the case of the female, it included encouraging senior pupils to engage in sexual intercourse with her.' 'Obvious abusive trends' She said the school's strong culture of rugby and sport left those who did not fit in vulnerable to abuse and bullying. She said by the millennium, the school was 'content to rely on positive but, in fact, inadequate and insufficiently critical' inspections, while 'obvious abusive trends' were missed – until 2014 when a wider police inquiry revealed many longstanding weaknesses in child protection and pastoral care. Following a poor inspection report in 2015, Merchiston was made subject to special measures by the Scottish government. It was obliged to respond, and Lady Smith said it was 'well led by its board of governors', and policies 'were corrected and became meaningful'. 'Deep and lasting harm' Mr Anderson and Mr Baird added: 'That sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children at our school was allowed to continue for so long is deeply upsetting and we respect and we thank our former pupils who had the courage and bravery to speak about their experiences in evidence to the inquiry. 'Their collective testimonies painted a picture of a school that fostered a culture of fear, bullying and abuse that is hard to fathom, and unrecognisable with the school that exists today. 'We fully accept these criticisms, we acknowledge these failures, and we recognise the deep and lasting harm that was caused. The school is wholeheartedly committed to ensuring the lessons of the past are fully learned. 'Safeguarding is our number one priority and the wellbeing of the young people in our care is of paramount importance to us. 'Following a negative inspection report in 2015, Merchiston was placed under special measures by the Scottish Government. This was a turning point and as Lady Smith recognises in her report, we responded promptly and decisively.'
