Largest 17th of May celebration outside Norway happening in Ballard
SEATTLE - This Saturday, the largest 17th of May celebration outside of Norway is happening in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.
For the 136th year, Ballard's streets will be adorned with Norwegian flags and filled with celebration on Saturday as the community comes together to mark Syttende Mai, Norway's Constitution Day.
The 2025 grand marshal will be Norway's Ambassador to the United States, Anniken Huitfeldt. Serving as honorary marshal will be Lori Ann Reinhall, president of the Seattle-Bergen Sister City Association.
What's next
Events include live music, community events, and a parade. These activities officially kick of at 11 a.m. on May 17 and are scattered across the neighborhood.
Community landmarks like the Leif Erikson Lodge, the National Nordic Museum and Skål Beer Hall are just some of the places locals and visitors alike will enjoy the holiday.
At the heart of the festivities is the grand Syttende Mai parade, which kicks off at 4 p.m., two hours earlier than in 2024.
The parade route winds through the streets of Ballard, starting at N.W. 62nd Street and 24th Ave. N.W., then proceeds south on 24th Ave. N.W. to N.W. Market Street. From there, the procession turns east to Bergen Place before culminating at Ballard Avenue and Lone.
Spectators can expect a colorful display of floats, marching bands, and traditional Norwegian attire as the parade makes its way through the neighborhood.
Those who are driving or taking public transit are encouraged to plan ahead as several roads in the area of the parade will be shut down for most of the day.
According to parade organizers, "No parking" signs will be posted on the following streets starting early afternoon and lasting until 8 p.m. on May 17:
NW 64th Street to NW 60th Street between 24th Ave and 28th Ave NW
24th Ave NW from NW 63rd Street to NW Market Street
NW Market Street from 24th Ave NW to 22nd Ave NW
22nd Ave NW from NW Market Street to Ballard Ave NW
Ballard Ave NW from Market Street to NW Dock Street
Additionally, roads along the parade route will close shortly before 4 p.m.

Henry, who is a self-professed superfan of Sandler's work, agreed to a wager during an appearance on 'The Dan Patrick Show' where if he reaches 2,000 rushing yards in the 2025 season, Patrick would get the running back in a film alongside Sandler. Henry agreed to the proposal and the veteran sportscaster reached out to his friend Sandler. In response, the 'Uncut Gems' and 'Happy Gilmore' star sent a personal video for Henry which was shown to the 31-year-old at practice. 'Yo, Derrick, I just woke up. You know that, that's why I look disgusting, on top of the fact that I am disgusting, but I love ya. Congrats on everything, baby,' Sandler said to Henry. '2,000-plus (yards) this year not only gets you in a movie, but we'll have a nice dinner together and talk about Dan Patrick's facial hair and how hard it is for him to grow it.I love ya and keep it up.' Henry replied to the video on social media afterwards, saying: 'Dan you're a real one! Adam Sandler is da (GOAT)!! I appreciate the extra motivation!' Henry has already surpassed the 2,000 rushing yards mark in a season before, doing so in 2020 when he ran for 2,027 yards while with the Tennessee Titans. Last season, Henry finished just 79 yards short of 2,000 yards, finishing with 1,921 in his first season with the Baltimore Ravens. He is one of just nine running backs ever to reach the milestone and would become the first ever player to do it twice if he was to do it again. Earlier this offseason, Henry signed a two-year, $30 million contract extension with the Ravens. And despite being one of the older running backs in the league, he says he's not concerned about his age. 'I want to be great,' Henry told. 'No matter how good it is or how bad it is, I'm always focused on me trying to get better each and every day and each and every way I can.
