Greenpeace joins anti-Bezos protest with Venice banner complaining about billionaire tax breaks
Greenpeace on Monday joined the smattering of protests in Venice against the upcoming wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.
A half-dozen protesters unfurled a giant banner early Monday in St. Mark's Square reading: 'IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.' Local police quickly folded it up and took it away.
The demonstration followed other anti-Bezos initiatives last week including a banner draped from the San Giorgio bell tower, one from the lagoon city's famous Rialto Bridge and posters plastered up around town complaining about the upcoming wedding and the effects of overtourism on Venice.
The 'No Space for Bezos' movement — a play on words also referring to the bride's recent space flight — has united a dozen Venetian organizations including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups.
Activists argue the wedding exemplifies broader failures in municipal governance, particularly the prioritization of tourism over resident needs.
Greenpeace said it teamed with the British group 'Everyone Hates Elon,' which has smashed Teslas to protest Elon Musk, for Monday's banner. Greenpeace said it wanted to draw attention to the comparitively low taxes many billionaires pay while allegedly exacerbating the climate crisis with environmentally unsustainable lifestyles.
Italian and Venetian officials have strongly criticized the protests and welcomed the Bezos-Sanchez nuptials, which are scheduled for later this week.
Over the weekend, as the protests continued to make headlines in Italy, a Venetian environmental research association, Corila, said Bezos' Earth Fund was supporting its work with an 'important donation.'
Corila, which unites university scholars and Italy's main national research council in researching Venetian protection strategies, wouldn't say how much Bezos was donating but noted contacts began in April, well before the protests started.

Amazon to invest £40 billion in the UK over next three years
LONDON — Amazon will invest £40 billion ($54 billion) in the U.K. over the next three years, the e-commerce titan announced Tuesday. The company said it plans to spend the money on building four new fulfillment centers — large warehouses where it prepares orders for delivery — as well as upgrades and expansions to its existing operations buildings across the country. The announcement was cheered by the British government, which has been courting investments from major tech players of late as it looks to boost domestic growth and productivity. U.K. monthly gross domestic product shrank 0.3% in April, as U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariffs and domestic tax rises kicked in. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement that the investment would create thousands of new jobs — and was a sign the government's growth plan was working. Amazon said the new roles as a result of the investment would include 2,000 positions at a previously announced fulfillment center in Hull and an additional 2,000 jobs at another site in Northampton. The firm also plans to open two new buildings at its corporate headquarters in East London, improve its transportation infrastructure throughout the U.K. and redevelop Bray Film Studios — which it acquired last year — in Berkshire. Last year, Amazon announced a five-year £8 billion investment to build and operate data centers in the U.K. to boost compute capacity for artificial intelligence. The tech giant isn't alone in making big bets on the U.K. Earlier this month, TikTok announced plans to open a new, 135,000-square-foot office in London's Barbican area. The country also received praise from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who called it an "incredible place to invest." At the same time, tax hikes introduced by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves have led to criticisms from tech entrepreneurs that the U.K. is not a welcoming enough environment for high-growth startups.

Take a look inside the factory building America's first robotaxi fleet
Zoox, an Amazon-backed robotaxi company, has opened what it said is the first serial production facility in the US designed to manufacture purpose-built robotaxis. Located in Hayward, California, the 220,000-square-foot facility will serve as the launchpad for Zoox's plans to launch a commercial ride-hailing service, starting in Las Vegas and San Francisco, with operations in other cities like Austin and Miami expected in the coming years. In a press release, the company said the factory will eventually be able to produce more than 10,000 vehicles a year. "Today, we're producing roughly one robotaxi every day, and we will continue to scale this over the coming year," a Zoox spokesperson told Business Insider. That capacity will scale based on market demand, Zoox said. Unlike many competitors, like Tesla, Nvidia, and Waymo, which retrofit existing cars, Zoox is focused on building autonomous vehicles from the ground up without a steering wheel or driver's seat. The facility handles nearly every aspect of production: vehicle assembly, hardware, software integration, end-of-line testing, and shipping. While the process incorporates some automation — robots apply adhesive and move vehicles down the line — most tasks, including installing interiors and calibrating sensors, are done manually. The modular robotaxi moves through the facility via an automated track guided by QR codes. One of the final steps before a vehicle is considered road-ready is a series of quality and safety checks. Each unit rotates in a calibration bay to synchronize its camera, lidar, radar, and infrared sensors. It then undergoes wheel and headlight alignment, a 75-mph run on a dynamometer, a water-tightness test via simulated rain, and a final inspection under a light tunnel. Once testing is complete, the vehicle is sent to an outdoor track for a short autonomous run to validate its basic functions, including navigation, braking, and rider pick-up and drop-off behavior. Zoox said it expects the facility to create hundreds of jobs, including operators, logistics workers, and assembly specialists. "Zoox does use automated machines for a few parts of the process, such as moving the vehicles from station to station," Zoox's spokesperson said, "but it is primarily done by hand, given the complex software and hardware integrations that are needed." Zoox is already operating limited public rides in Las Vegas and aims to bring its service to San Francisco next. "Zoox will be launching our commercial ride-hailing service in Las Vegas later this year, with San Francisco to follow," the spokesperson said. But the company's expansion comes as its technology faces increased scrutiny. In May 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into Zoox after two motorcyclists collided with Zoox-equipped vehicles that reportedly braked unexpectedly while operating autonomously. Both incidents resulted in minor injuries. The NHTSA is also reviewing the company's self-certification process for its robotaxi model. A Zoox spokesperson told Business Insider at the time that the company is cooperating with regulators and remains committed to transparency and safety. Zoox, which Amazon acquired for $1.2 billion in 2020, remains in testing mode and has not announced a commercial release date for its robotaxi.
