Paul Haggis: Rape case against Oscar-winning writer dropped in Italy
An Italian judge has dismissed sexual assault charges against Oscar-winning writer Paul Haggis, three years after he was arrested.Haggis is known for writing and directing the Oscar-winning 2004 film Crash, as well as co-writing James Bond films Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.He was arrested in Brindisi in 2022 after being accused of rape by a British woman who had attended a film festival with him."A false allegation is a terrible thing," he told reporters in the city on Thursday. "It was very hard on my family, and myself as well, I guess. I felt very bad for my family and now, really I feel grateful."
He added: "I feel very grateful to the judiciary, the judge, and for my avvocato [lawyer] for his incredible strength and for his ability to see the truth and lay it out simply and understandably so that everyone can see."Haggis's lawyers told the Reuters news agency that a court judge had ruled no sexual act took place without consent."For Mr Haggis, it is the end of a nightmare that has unfairly shattered the career of a film genius and 2006 Oscar winner," they said in a statement.The Canadian film-maker, 72, added that he had applied for residency in Italy and planned to live there permanently.In a separate case in 2022, Haggis was ordered to pay $10m in damages after being found liable in a civil trial for raping a woman. He denied the allegations and never faced any criminal charges in the case.

The eyes of the world will inevitably be on Venice later this month when financial colossus Jeff Bezos marries fiancee Lauren Sanchez. Everyone in the Italian city is expecting a staggering display of wealth from Amazon-founder Bezos, with money to burn, and Ms Sanchez, who looks like she enjoys lighting the match. And yet, despite the huge wealth and profile of the couple and their celebrity guests, it can be revealed that this will be a publicity-shy and surprisingly small event. Modest, even. With fewer than 200 guests – a fraction of what was expected – and a final bill which is said to be less than £10million, it is clear that the bride and groom are dialling down on the bling. As an impeccably placed source tells me: 'The wedding has had a make-under.' Indeed, the event is going to cost the equivalent of loose change for the groom, who is worth $220billion and spends $34million a year just to run his yacht – the $500 million Koru. The yacht will be moored at San Basilio – the closest the giant vessel can get to the centre of Venice due to regulations to protect the city's fragile ecosystem – and be in sight of the Hotel Cipriani, where many guests will be lodged. It's thought Jeff, Lauren and their immediate families will stay on the nine-bedroom yacht. Other guests will be split between the Cipriani and Aman hotels nearby. The only famous couple definitely going are actor Orlando Bloom and his wife Katy Perry. Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian are invited, but their attendance has not been confirmed. Instead, the guests of honour will be Bezos' mum, Jackie, who had Jeff when she was 17, and his adoptive father and life-long inspiration, Mike Bezos. The island of San Giorgio Maggiore will potentially be the destination for the couple's nuptials The couple loaned him $245,000, their life savings, to start Amazon in 1995 and Mike, who now runs the Bezos family foundation, is a particularly impressive individual, having emigrated to the US alone from Cuba aged 16. 'They understand that the space flight criticism was bad for a reason and are responding to it by being less 'Marie Antoinette'.' The source adds: 'People really underestimate Lauren and Jeff. Truly, they are good people. They don't want the wedding to be a lightning rod for inequities in the world. It's just a wedding.' That's as maybe, but the celebrations are still expected to take place at jaw-droppingly beautiful – and exclusive – locations. Sources in Venice believe the nuptials will happen at the Fondazione Cini – a monastery on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Crucially, it will be free on June 25 – the most likely day of the wedding – as it is closed to the public on Wednesdays. Having twice hosted the G7 summit, it can offer complete security and privacy and is close to where the Koru will dock. Sources also expect celebrations at the palazzo apartment owned by Bezos' close friend Diane von Furstenberg. Local sources indicate that all 79 rooms of the fabled Hotel Cipriani have been block booked from June 24-26. A suite in high season costs around £20,000 a night. The Cipriani boasts the largest swimming pool in Venice and the Casanova gardens, where the infamous seducer used to meet his conquests. The couple are also believed to have booked out the Aman Canal Grande, the 24-bedroom palazzo where George Clooney tied the knot with lawyer Amal in 2014. Plans are being co-ordinated with the mayor of Venice's office to minimise disruption but some locals concerned about overtourism are planning protests. 'This city is not for sale, it is not a playground for the rich,' said activist Ruggero Tallon.

Family of missing teenager vow to 'fight for the truth' after body found following month-long search for him
The family of a Scottish teenager who disappeared more than a month ago have vowed to never give up on their 'fight for the truth' after a body was found on Friday. Cole Cooper, 19, was reported missing on May 9, prompting a major search investigation that involved helicopters, divers and financial investigators. He was last seen by his family on May 2 or 3 and was captured on CCTV at about 6am on May 4 in Longcroft, Falkirk, as he unsuccessfully tried to access his father's home after a house party. After scouring 2,000 hours of CCTV footage and speaking to more than 400 people, Police Scotland confirmed that the body of a man had been found on Friday evening in a wooded area near Kilysth Road at around 4.15pm. Now, Mr Cooper's heartbroken family have shared how they are 'living in a nightmare we can't wake up from', following the month-long search for their beloved boy. Taking to Facebook to issue a painstaking update, the family published a statement that read: 'We never gave up, and we never will give up - not until we have the answers. The fight for truth, for justice, and for Cole is not over'. The family, who described Mr Cooper as their 'world' and said they were 'completely broken', also thanked the local community for their assistance in the widespread search effort to bring their missing boy home. They added: 'To the incredible community and beyond, thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. On Friday, a Police Scotland spokesman confirmed that the body of a man had been discovered in a wooded area near Kilysth Road. It added: 'Formal identification has yet to take place however the family of missing man Cole Cooper, 19, has been informed. 'Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances.' The final sighting of Mr Cooper was at 8.45pm on May 7, on the A803 at the intersection with Cumbernauld Road, Longcroft, when he asked a school friend for a lift - which was not given. Around 5ft10ins, of medium build with brown short hair, he was last seen wearing a black puffer-style jacket with black jogging bottoms. His family described the missing boy's disappearance as 'completely out of character'. In a heartfelt plea made just two weeks ago, Mr Cooper's mother Wendy Stewart begged her son to 'come home'. She said: 'I love and miss you so so so much. Where are you son? My heart is breaking I just want a big cuddle from you son.' The worried mother also posted a touching video of Mr Cooper singing into a microphone and dancing with her, with the caption 'Please help get my gorgeous, kind loving boy back to me'. Following his shock disappearance, an online portal was established to help share footage, images and possible lines of inquiry. Detectives, who said they received 'numerous' submissions from members of the public, viewed more than 2000 hours of CCTV. Officers also reported that the investigation was being treated as a missing person's inquiry rather than a criminal probe. Chief Inspector Alex Hatrick, the local area commander, said on June 6: Our priority remains tracing Cole and getting answers for his family on his whereabouts. 'We have a dedicated team, including specialist officers and national resources, following all lines of inquiry. 'Specialist search teams as well as the air support and dive and marine units have been searching Longcroft and the surrounding area. 'I would like to thank the public for the support they've shown for this investigation and all the information provided to police. It shows the community is as committed to finding Cole as we are.' CI Hatrick also urged any members of the public with information relevant to Mr Cooper's disappearance to get in touch with the force. He said: 'I continue to urge anyone with information on Mr Cooper's movements or whereabouts to come forward. 'No matter how significant you believe that information is, it could prove vital.' Any individuals with information have been asked to contact 101 quoting incident number 828 of May 9.
