Explosives looted by Maoists in Odisha recovered from Jharkhand's Saranda Forest
In a major breakthrough, Jharkhand and Odisha police, along with central security forces, have recovered 2.5 tonnes of explosives during a joint operation in the Saranda forest of West Singhbhum district, officials said on Tuesday.
The explosives were part of a cache looted by Maoists on May 27 from a stone quarry in Relahatu Yanko, located under Keblang police station in Odisha's Sundargarh district.
On May 30, an earlier operation had led to the recovery of 150 kg of the stolen explosives from the Tirilposhi area of the Saranda forest.
According to officials, around two tonnes of explosives still remain in Maoist possession, and an intensive search operation is going on.
The armed Maoist squad had earlier intercepted an explosive-laden van which was on the way to a quarry and diverted it into the dense Saranda forest, where they unloaded approximately 200 packets of explosives.
The incident triggered a heightened alert in both Odisha and Jharkhand. In addition to police efforts, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) also launched an investigation, while Odisha Police had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
Police sources said a significant portion of the looted explosives had been buried underground by the Maoists in the Tirilposhi area under the Jaraikela police station. The recovery was made during a joint operation by Jharkhand Police, CRPF, Cobra Battalion, and Odisha Police.
Rourkela Police of Odisha confirmed the recovery via a post on its official social media handle.
The expansive Saranda forest continues to serve as a major Maoist hideout. However, sustained counterinsurgency operations over the past two years have pushed the extremists into smaller pockets of the region.
Maoists routinely plant explosives along forest routes to target police and paramilitary personnel. In the last two years, at least four security personnel and more than ten civilians have lost their lives in such landmine blasts.

Cops identify Maoist mastermind behind theft of explosives
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Odisha police have identified Anmol, a Jharkhand-based Maoist leader, as the mastermind behind the recent theft of around 5,000 kg of explosives from a stone quarry at Banko in Sundargarh district. Anmol, 45, also known as Anmol da, Samar, and Lalchand Hembram, is a state committee member (SCM) of the outlawed CPI (Maoist). He carries bounties of Rs 15 lakh in Jharkhand and Rs 20 lakh in Odisha. Originally from Itwabeda Jarwa village under Penk-Narayanpur police station in Jharkhand, Anmol was previously active in the Bihar-Jharkhand-Odisha regional committee. Until 2018-19, he coordinated Maoist operations in Sambalpur-Deogarh-Sundargarh division of Odisha and led several attacks on security forces along the Odisha-Jharkhand axis. His knowledge of Naxal operations in Odisha and tactical proficiency facilitated the bold theft at the stone quarry in Banko, under K Balang police limits in Rourkela on May 27. The location's proximity to Jharkhand's Saranda forest, with its thick vegetation and challenging terrain, offered suitable cover for Anmol and his associates. "Of the approximately 5 tonnes of gelatin sticks stolen, 3.8 tonnes have been retrieved. All credit goes to the personnel engaged in the massive joint search operation, which is still continuing. We aim to make complete recovery," Khurania said. The DGP acknowledged that the Sundargarh Naxal incident revealed areas for improvement. "We came across some learning points. We are reviewing standard operating procedures for explosive transport, storage in Naxal-affected areas, and compliance verification. Corrective and remedial measures would be implemented," Khurania said. He said police have begun inspecting firms involved in explosive trade in the state, particularly in Maoist-affected regions. Odisha police said they would not suggest to the ministry of home affairs (MHA) to reinstate Sundargarh under the Centre's security-related expenditure (SRE) scheme for Naxal-affected districts. Sundargarh was excluded from the SRE scheme after being removed from the left-wing extremism (LWE) affected areas list last year. The top cop reported a significant reduction in Naxal operations in Odisha, expressing confidence that law enforcement will successfully support the Centre's objective of establishing a 'Maoist-free India' by March 2026.

Kargil Police Faces Legal Roadblock For Sunita Custody, NIA Mumbai May Join Probe
1 2 Nagpur: Kargil police team, which arrived in Nagpur on Tuesday to take custody of Sunita Jamgade, who illegally crossed into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), encountered a legal roadblock on Wednesday when a Nagpur court demanded a physical production warrant from a Kargil before allowing her transfer. Zonal DCP Niketan Kadam confirmed that without proper documentation, the Nagpur court cannot issue a local production warrant or release her into Kargil team's custody. Now, Kargil police, which had moved court here, will remain in the city for at least another day. Nagpur police are also coordinating with National Investigation Agency (NIA) Mumbai. Kadam said the NIA shared a list of questions for Sunita, and local investigators will send written responses. "If NIA finds a terrorism angle, their team will travel to Nagpur," he added. Earlier, the Kargil police team visited Sunita's home in North Nagpur. Senior PI Satish Ade confirmed the visit, noting that while Sunita's mother was not at home, her brother remained tight-lipped and reluctant to talk. "Some dubious apps were found, and we are conducting a forensic analysis," Kadam said. "So far, no direct link to espionage has been established, but cyber experts are verifying if any of the apps contain Pakistani malware." The forensic probe also revealed Sunita communicated with individuals across the border under the pretext of starting a gemstone business — conversations that later shifted toward discussing how to enter Pakistan. Meanwhile, police mapped her route and pinpointed the exact location from where she crossed the border. They also confirmed Sunita travelled from Srinagar to Kargil with local help and J&K police have identified the individual. A probe is underway to track him down. "Her teenage son has shared crucial details with us and appears to be aware of many events that occurred during the journey," Kadam said. Her son is currently with the child welfare committee, Nagpur. Sunita, 43, is currently in judicial custody and under intense scrutiny after being charged under the Official Secrets Act (OSA), the Passport Act, and sections related to national security.
