Govt to seek Cabinet nod to tweak PM Internship Scheme Based on pilot rounds
Based on the review of the two pilot phases carried out for the PM Internship Scheme (PMIS), the Ministry of Corporate Affairs is planning to undertake certain tweaks in the scheme. Work is currently underway for preparing an internal note that will be sent for a final approval from the Union Cabinet soon, a government source said.
Companies beyond the top 500 have shown the intent to participate in the scheme, the source said, adding that industry chambers such as CII and Ficci have also reached out to the government to extend its support for the proposed changes in the scheme.
'The government will bring in some tweaks in the scheme based on its experience from the pilots. It will have to be approved by the Cabinet. The Cabinet note process is on,' the source said.
Under the scheme, an amount of Rs 4,500 is provided per month by the Government of India to selected candidates through Direct Benefit Transfer, with an additional Rs 500 offset provided by the company's CSR (corporate social responsibility) funds. Many companies are providing additional compensation to the candidates along with incurring their expenses for travel, food and accommodation, sources said.
In its second pilot round, the scheme had drawn internship postings from 327 companies, up from around 280 in the first round. Announced in the Union Budget for 2024-25 in July last year, the scheme aims to provide internships to 1 crore youth in top 500 companies over five years.
In the first round of the pilot, which was conducted between October and December last year, over 1.27 lakh opportunities were posted and over 82,000 offers were made to successful candidates. The number of candidates who accepted internship offers was lower than expected in the first round, with just around 8,000 taking up offers till February 6, The Indian Express had earlier reported.
In the second round, which began in January, around 1.18 lakh internship opportunities were listed, spread across 735 districts. To improve the acceptability of the scheme, the government had made some changes like providing details of the company, the internship opportunity and the exact location (along with geotagging) so that candidates know a priori how far they have to travel. Earlier, such details were not provided upfront to candidates. The number of participants is learnt to have picked up in the second round.
The internship scheme was a part of the Prime Minister's Package for Employment and Skilling announced in the 2024-25 Budget with an overall outlay of Rs 2 lakh crore. Initially, Rs 2,000 crore was provided to the Corporate Affairs Ministry for the ongoing financial year.
In the revised estimates for 2024-25, the amount allocated for the scheme was scaled down to Rs 380 crore. For 2025-26, an amount of Rs 10,831 crore has been provided in the Budget, including Rs 59.77 crore of capital outlay.

Thinking of withdrawing your PF? A surprise 30% tax may hit you
Are you tempted to withdraw your Provident Fund (PF) savings after quitting your job? Doing that without completing five years of continuous service could dent your savings, with up to 30 per cent of the amount going in taxes. Legal experts and tax professionals say that hasty PF withdrawals defeat the purpose of long-term retirement savings and have hefty tax implications. 'Withdrawing your PF before five years of continuous service is treated as a taxable event,' said Vishal Gehrana, partner designate at Karanjawala & Co. and advocate-on-record at the Supreme Court. 'Not only is the entire amount taxable as per your slab, but if you haven't submitted your PAN, TDS (tax deducted at source) is deducted at 30 per cent.' What exactly gets taxed? Both employee and employer contributions, and the interest earned on them, become taxable income under Section 192A of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) deducts TDS if the withdrawal is more than Rs 50,000, said Gehrana. Kunal Savani, partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, said: 'The employer's share along with interest becomes taxable as profits in lieu of salary. While the employee's own contribution may be tax-free, interest on it could still be taxable, especially if thresholds are crossed.' Are there exceptions? Yes. Tax is not applicable if the withdrawal is due to ill health, business closure, or reasons beyond the employee's control. In such cases, the law provides relief. Also, once an individual completes five years of continuous service or withdraws PF after retirement, the entire amount is tax-exempt under Section 10(12) of the Income-tax Act. Mistakes to avoid Withdrawing PF instead of transferring it when switching jobs Not maintaining five years of cumulative service Failing to submit PAN, leading to higher TDS Assuming Form 15G/H always prevents TDS (they work only if income is below the taxable limit) Treat PF as long-term asset 'Instead of withdrawing PF early, transferring the account to the new employer preserves service continuity and tax benefits,' said Gehrana. He recommended maintaining documents to support your case in the event of a tax notice. A recent X post by tax professional Sujit Bangar summed it up aptly: 'Withdrawing PF after resigning job? If you've not completed 5 years, the entire amount is taxable. 30 per cent TDS. Don't act in a hurry.' Transfer your PF account when changing jobs to maintain service continuity and qualifying for tax-free withdrawals after five years. Avoid full withdrawals unless absolutely necessary. Instead, opt for partial advances allowed for medical, housing, or education needs, which are typically not taxable. Time your withdrawal in a financial year when your total income is below the taxable limit to reduce or eliminate tax burden. Submit Form 15G or 15H, if eligible, to avoid TDS on withdrawals below the tax threshold.

Elon Musk's Starlink Gets Licence For Satcom Services In India: Report
Last Updated: Starlink has received the licence and it will be granted trial spectrum within 15-20 days of applying for it, news agency PTI has reported. Elon Musk-owned Starlink has received a licence for satellite communication (satcom) services in India, the news agency PTI has reported, citing sources. This makes Starlink the third company to secure this licence from the Department of Telecom (DoT), after Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio. According to the report, DoT sources confirmed that Starlink has received the licence and stated that they will be granted trial spectrum within 15-20 days. The Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence has been approved after the company fulfilled all security compliance requirements outlined in its letter of intent (LoI). Last month, the government had issued a letter of intent (LoI) to Starlink. Before launching its services, Starlink still needs approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and must be allocated spectrum by the government. Starlink, which had been vying for a India license for some time now, has signed pacts with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which together control more than 70 per cent of the country's telecom market, to bring the US satellite internet giant's services to India. Starlink, the satellite internet arm of Elon Musk-led SpaceX, is known for delivering high-speed, low-latency broadband through a vast network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, operating just 550 km above the Earth. This is in contrast to traditional geostationary satellites, which orbit much farther out and generally offer slower, higher-latency connections. SpaceX has already deployed around 7,000 LEO satellites globally and aims to scale this up to over 40,000, enabling internet access even in the most remote and challenging terrains — from conflict zones to disaster-struck regions. With regulatory barriers being cleared, focus is now shifting to what Starlink will cost Indian users. According to reports, industry estimates suggest the monthly subscription fee could range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000, depending on the plan and location. On top of that, users will have to buy a Starlink kit — which includes a satellite dish and Wi-Fi router — priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 35,000. However, according to The Economic Times, Starlink is set to launch in India with a highly competitive initial promotional offer: unlimited data plans priced below $10 per month (roughly Rs 857). These are speculations so far and the exact price will be known once the company starts the services.
