'I was approached to put my hat in the ring' - Helen Zille on possible Joburg Mayoral run
DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille confirmed with IOl that she was approached to the next mayor of Johannesburg.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council chairperson, Helen Zille, said she is considering contesting to become the next Johannesburg mayor.
This is as the political parties are gearing up for the 2026 local government elections.
In an interview with IOL, Zille confirmed that she has been approached to become the DA's mayoral candidate, but she is in talks with her family regarding accepting the nomination.
'I have been approached to put my hat in the ring for mayor. I am still considering it and consulting my family,' she said.
Although no deal was reached, Zille said they have been head-hunting candidates for over a year, with potential ones showing interest.
However, she said some potential candidates have said they cannot do the job for the remuneration offered to a mayor.
'If I decide to run, I will have to go through the same gruelling selection process as everyone else,' she said.
Zille served as the leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) from 2007 to 2015 and completed two full five-year terms as Premier of the Western Cape.

Prior to this, she was elected Mayor of Cape Town in March 2006, following the DA's emergence as the largest party in the city.
She secured the mayoral position with a narrow majority of 106 votes to 103, made possible through support from several smaller parties.
Currently, Johannesburg faces a similarly fragmented political landscape, with no single party holding a clear majority, an environment that poses significant governance challenges.
Zille has previously voiced serious concerns regarding the state of Johannesburg, attributing the city's decline to the failures of its coalition government.
She warned that deteriorating infrastructure and unreliable services, particularly the water supply, are driving residents away.
These issues came to a head in November, when the DA in Johannesburg formally called for the dissolution of the Johannesburg Water board, amid a growing water crisis.
The situation escalated further in 2025, when several areas of the city endured prolonged water outages lasting weeks, underscoring the urgency of effective governance and infrastructure management.
Meanwhile, Mayor Dada Morero has introduced a bomb squad to help address the service delivery issues in the city. This is ahead of the G20 summit later this year.

A court ruling this year stripped most members of the mayoral committee of their bodyguards and luxury official vehicles. The DA in Johannesburg is requesting an urgent investigation into the use of a city-owned luxury vehicle by one of the members of the Government of Local Unity (GLU) for party activities. The party claims that one of the members of the mayoral committee travelled to KwaZulu-Natal last weekend using the City's BMW X3. This vehicle was part of the security detail for members of the mayoral committee before the South Gauteng High Court put an end to the City's controversial VIP Protection Policy. In a statement, DA shadow MMC for Public Safety, Solomon Maila, said the mayor should investigate if the implicated councillor is in contempt of court. 'The DA in Johannesburg has written to Executive Mayor Dada Morero to ensure that a full investigation is conducted into allegations that a member of his Mayoral Committee travelled to the eThekwini area in KwaZulu-Natal for party-political activities during the weekend of 30 May to 1 June 2025 using the City's official BMW without consent. 'The DA understands that this vehicle was procured as part of the City's implementation of the VIP Protection Policy that was declared unconstitutional and invalid Gauteng High Court on 2 January 2025,' he said. The municipality bank card is used for fuel Maila said whistleblowers had informed them that the BMW X3 had been refuelled twice over the weekend when it was in use at the ratepayers' expense. 'Which suggests that it travelled for more than 1000 km in that period. 'According to the DA's sources in the city, the First National Bank (FNB) card linked to the said vehicle was used for the refueling and the payment of tollgates to and from KwaZulu-Natal,' Maila said. He said this was an abuse of municipal resources if the allegations are true. 'These allegations point to a possible unlawful use of a motor vehicle without the necessary consent. If proven, these allegations would mean that the said MMC has also acted in contempt of the High Court, which is another criminal offence,' he said. The DA says it wants the mayor to investigate the movements of the vehicle between May 30 and June 1, 2025. US travel advisory reveals 'bigger issues at play' in diplomatic ties

Image: AFP The United States government has revised its travel advisory to South Africa after President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Donald Trump at the White House, raising concerns that these may be further attempts to paint the country as a no-go zone. This latest level 2 travel advisory warning its citizens to be cautious when visiting the country, issued on May 27, comes hot on the heels of Ramaphosa's recent visit to Washington where he and his delegation pleaded with Trump to reconsider some of his recent views about a white genocide in South Africa. The advisory urges American citizens to exercise increased caution in South Africa due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. 'Violent crime is common and includes robbery, rape, carjacking and mugging. There are also "smash-and-grab" attacks on vehicles. Violent crime is more common in the downtown areas of big cities, especially after dark. "Kidnapping is a threat in South Africa. Kidnappers target US citizens and other foreign travelers to steal money. Captors often force victims to withdraw cash or give online account passwords before they are let go. International relations expert Dr Noluthando Phungula said the US was trying to vilify South Africa as part of a bigger issue. "We respect the sovereign right of all nations to provide guidance to their citizens travelling abroad. We also acknowledge the recent meeting between Presidents Ramaphosa and Trump and the subsequent media coverage that has followed. However, it is important to offer broader context and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all visitors to our country. Furthermore, the advisory states that there is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity, in South Africa. "Due to the risks, U.S. government employees working in South Africa must obtain special authorisation to travel to many informal settlements (townships) in and around Cape Town. U.S. mission staff must use fully armoured vehicles when visiting and visiting hours are limited to 10am to 3pm," it states.

Merafong residents brace for major tariff hikes after municipal budget approval
Residents of Merafong are set to experience significant increases in municipal service charges from 1 July 2025, after the 2025/2026 municipal budget was officially approved during a Special Council Meeting on 28 May. The newly approved budget outlines steep hikes across various services: Water tariffs will rise by 15.30% Electricity tariffs will increase by 8–11%, depending on usage Sewerage services will go up by 9.5% Refuse removal will increase by 6% Sundry tariffs will also rise by 6% In addition, property rates for residents living in towns will rise by 5%, while agricultural properties and Public Service Infrastructure (PSI) will see a 3% increase.
