South Africa v Australia: World Test Championship final cricket, day one

Title: Preamble
Content: Hello and welcome to live coverage of the first day of the World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa.
The ICC's red-ball showcase might still be some distance short of becoming the pinnacle of the format but the hype will be real once Australia and South Africa step onto Lord's to renew their one-time fierce rivalry. Australia are out to become the first side to retain the title (which, admittedly, will only be awarded for the third time), while South Africa have more than just silverware – in this case, the WTC mace – on the line after three decades of pain and suffering at the pointy end of global cricket tournaments.
South Africa secured their place in the decider – somewhat surprisingly – as the No 1 side across the two-year WTC cycle. The Proteas arguably made the most of a friendly fixture as they avoided crossing paths with the defending champions, as well as England, and only faced two-time runners-up India in a tied home series. But they could now respond to the critics of their path to the final in the most satisfying way.
South Africa have in fact only met their old foes Australia in a single Test series – for three matches away in 2022-23 – in the past seven years, in one of all too many signs of the ever-widening divide that now exists between cricket's 'Big Three' and the remainder of the Test-playing nations. But the winner-takes-all WTC final at Lord's feels like neither the time nor the place to be laying out all that has gone wrong with the purists' preferred format, especially with play due to start in an hour.
First ball will be at 10.30am local time or 7.30pm AEST / 11.30am SAST. The toss will take place 30 minutes before that. I'll be seeing us through to drinks in the second session, when the tone will inevitably shift as self-confessed South Africa tragic, Dan Gallan, takes the reins.

Erasmus backs university student Makhaza to be future Springbok

June 12 (Reuters) - Coach Rassie Erasmus does not foresee an immediate Springbok cap for Ntokozo Makhaza, but believes the winger will one day wear the green and gold having been called into the South Africa squad without playing a game of professional rugby. Makhaza, 23, who found out about his selection for the start of the international season on social media, plays for the University of Cape Town in South Africa's Varsity Cup competition and is a reliable goal-kicker and speedy on the wing. He is studying for a degree in psychology and social development and has never been tested against professional players. "It's been a pleasure to work with him," Erasmus told reporters on Thursday. "He's consistently been the top Varsity Cup player, and especially in terms of point scoring, probably one of the best in the competition's history. "You sometimes wonder, is this one of those players who slipped through the cracks? It's been good to see what he brings." Erasmus suggests the June 28 meeting with the Barbarians in Cape Town, and July's two tests against Italy and one versus Georgia, might come too soon, but believes Makhaza could wear the jersey in the future. "We definitely think he's someone who could play for the Springboks one day. It might be a bit early now. He's slotted in really well, but we're also being realistic. Having said that, he's certainly not far off the pace," Erasmus said. "I think he's going to make it one day. And if we hadn't given him this chance, we'd never know." Erasmus revealed there are several players with long-term injuries that are unlikely to feature for the Springboks this year – props Trevor Nyakane and Frans Malherbe, hooker/loose-forward Deon Fourie, and loose-forwards Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom. Better news is the return to fitness in the coming weeks of several World Cup winners, including flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit, number eight Jasper Wiese and scrumhalf Grant Williams.

Paul Kent drops bombshell about the mind-blowing revenge plot carried out by one of the NRL's most unassuming stars

Rugby league reporter Paul Kent has issued a bombshell revelation on why footy coach Ivan Cleary decided to return to Penrith. The four-time premiership-winning coach has previously opened up on the turn of events that led him to leave the Panthers back in 2015 after he was sacked by NRL legend Phil 'Gus' Gould. He and Gould have maintained a strained relationship since then, with the then-Panthers General Manager opting to wield the axe against the Premiership-winning coach because Cleary 'looked tired' and needed a break. But in a shocking revelation, Kent has claimed that Cleary returned to Penrith because he had 'unfinished business' before explaining that he went on to 'neck' Gould. During a Q&A session on Fanatics TV, Kent was asked: 'Can you tell us about the time Gus punted Ivan and his return?' 'I tell you what,' Kent said, appearing at first to choose his words carefully. 'Gus got rid of him [because] he said he was tired. Now my understanding of it was that Ivan had figured out that he probably didn't need Gus anymore. 'Gus recognised that. Gus moved him on. That's up for debate, you can look at that any way you like. 'Ivan went back and surprised a lot of people. I know he had a conversation with someone. 'They said: "Mate, why would you go back there after everything that had happened before?" 'And he said: "Because I've got unfinished business there." 'On the way through he's gone and necked Gus... so there's your mic drop.' In his book, Not Everything Counts But Everything Matters, which was released last year, Cleary paid tribute to Gould for his work at Penrith, but claimed their relationship had soured so much that it had ultimately culminated in his sacking in 2015. 'He did so much good for me, but he hurt me too,' the 54-year-old wrote, reflecting on his first spell in charge at the club. That fractious relationship has meant that Cleary has not spoken to Gus since he confronted Gould about his sacking when he rejoined the club in 2019. The 54-year-old ended his first spell at the Panthers with the club sitting rock bottom of the NRL. But after a two-year hiatus at the Wests Tigers, his return to the Panthers after Anthony Griffin's sacking surprised many, following his bitter exit. On his own motivations for rejoining Penrith, Cleary said that he gave the club an ultimatum that he would not take the reigns again unless Gould had zero no authority over him. 'I still feel so grateful that (former Penrith chairman) Dave O'Neill asked me for coffee that day and really put his own reputation on the line because it was controversial,' he wrote. 'When I came back initially, things weren't working out. 'Nathan wasn't playing well, I felt guilty about that. 'There was so much scrutiny and it certainly wasn't positive.' He added: 'I honestly didn't feel like I was the right man for the job, which was a lot to deal with because of how much I wanted to come back and how much it felt right.' Gould, meanwhile, left the club mid-way through 2019, and it was here that he denied that there had been a rift between the duo. 'Ivan's the right coach for the job going forward,' he said.
