NRL integrity unit investigates alleged press box incident between Warriors assistant coach and journalist

The Guardian03-03-2025

The NRL Integrity Unit is investigating an alleged incident in the press box between a journalist for Guardian Australia and New Zealand Warriors assistant coach Richard Agar during the season opener against Canberra in Las Vegas.
Rugby league reporter John Davidson, an Australian based in the UK who was in the US to cover the match as a freelancer, was allegedly pushed in the throat by Agar and verbally abused.
The incident was alleged to have occurred during half-time at Allegiant Stadium when Canberra led the Warriors 16-4. The Raiders ran out 30-8 winners over the Kiwi club.
New Zealand Warriors chief executive Cameron George said on Monday morning he was made aware 'an alleged incident at half-time involving assistant coach Richard Agar and an English journalist John Davidson from the Guardian' after the match.
'This morning I had the opportunity to speak with the NRL integrity unit. They are working through their process which will include us,' George said.
'I hope their process will be efficient and prompt so we can provide clarity on the matter.'
Agar was contacted through the Warriors but the club said there 'won't be any further comment at this stage'.
Agar is an English coach and former player who last held a head coaching role at Leeds Rhinos until he stepped down in 2022. He joined the Warriors the following year.

Wales v Japan TV channel finally announced days before game as Eddie Jones refuses to move kick-off

Wales v Japan TV channel finally announced days before game as Eddie Jones refuses to move kick-off Just days away from the first Test, there Japan national rugby union team head coach Eddie Jones (Image: Getty Images ) BBC Wales and S4C will each show one of Wales' summer Tests from their tour of Japan next month - with the coverage being announced just days before Wales take on the Brave Blossoms. The first Test in Kitakyushu on July 5 will be shown on BBC Two Wales, while the second Test the following week in Kobe will be broadcast by S4C. The first Test will kick-off at 6am UK time, with the second Test being slightly later at 6.50am. ‌ It's understood S4C's coverage of the second Test will have English-language commentary available on the red button. ‌ With the eight-hour time difference, Wales will be kicking off in the middle of the afternoon in Japan - with temperatures likely to be just above 30°C in Kitakyushu this weekend. WalesOnline understands that the BBC did try to move the kick-off back so that it wouldn't be so early in the UK. However, Brave Blossoms coach Eddie Jones has remained steadfast on the 2pm and 2.50pm local kick-off times. Article continues below The former England and Australia coach promised to "really run Wales off their feet" in the heat. The British and Irish Lions tour of Australia - with their warm-up matches against the Waratahs and Invitational AU & NZ side both on the same day as Wales' Tests in Japan - also made moving the kick-off time complicated, with the Lions matches kicking off at 11am UK time. An announcement had been expected on a TV deal last week, although the situation with the kick-off time is understood to have delayed things. Last year, England played a Test in Japan before their two-Test tour of New Zealand. However, no broadcaster came forward to cover the Test before RugbyPass ultimately ended up showing the match.

Horner's bizarre "making love" compliment to McLaren after show of dominance

McLaren produced a dominant 1-2 in Austria with Oscar Piastri sitting behind Lando Norris for large chunks of the race - which left Red Bull boss Christian Horner stunned Christian Horner was in awe of the McLaren pace on Sunday as he commented on how Oscar Piastri could follow Lando Norris so impressively it was as if the Australian was "making love to his exhaust pipe for lap after lap". McLaren enjoyed a 1-2 at the Red Bull Ring in Austria as they furthered their own lead in both championships. Norris led home Piastri with the two papaya cars in a world of their own as Charles Leclerc in third finished more than 19 seconds behind. ‌ A hallmark of Formula 1 in recent years has been the struggle to follow. Cars have looked to overtake quickly or back off with the dirty air destroying their tyres, but that hasn't been the case at McLaren. ‌ In the first stint, after Piastri was able to overtake Leclerc, he then followed Norris for the best part of 20 laps as he looked to overtake his teammate. Throughout he often followed within a second without seeing his performance die off. Horner, who had a miserable home race as he saw Max Verstappen retired on the opening lap after being hit, remains stunned that the two McLarens can operate as they are. He said: "What's truly impressive, and for me I can't see any other team being able to do it, is when you look at how close Oscar is able to run behind Lando with a car fat on fuel at the beginning of the race. He's basically making love to his exhaust pipe for lap after lap after lap, and the tyres are not dying. "I mean, that to me is, you know, that is their advantage. They've managed to create a car that really protects its tyres very well and obviously has a good balance. I can't see any other car that would be able to follow that closely and not grain the front tyres or the rear tyres. I don't really understand." McLaren are now 200 points clear in the teams' standings whilst it looks like a straight shootout between Piastri and Norris for the title, even at this stage of the season. It would be McLaren's first drivers' title since Lewis Hamilton in 2008 if they did top the standings. Norris responded impressively to his DNF in Canada and closes on his team-mate with a third win of the season as he said: "We had a great battle, that's for sure! It was a lot of fun. For me, a lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar." Horner added on the current frontrunners: "McLaren, you can see how they are racing each other, they've got a cushion to the rest of the field. For us, we just focus one race at a time. So we don't even think about championships."

What did Nick Kyrgios say after being axed from BBC's Wimbledon coverage?

Outspoken Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has publicly criticised the BBC's "very strange" decision to drop him from its coverage Wimbledon 2025. His reaction was characteristically candid and laced with snarky comments about the broadcaster's decision and his potential replacement. 3 Nick Kyrgios is not part of the commentary team for this year's Wimbledon Credit: Alamy 3 He worked as a pundit for the Beeb in 2024 Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios had been hoping to play at the All England Club for the first time since losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic. However, The 30-year-old confirmed he would not be appearing because of a recurring injury. What did Nick Kyrgios say? He said on Instagram: "Just wanted to give everyone a quick update — l've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year. "I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. "This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever. 'Thank you for all your continued support — it means everything to me. See you soon!" And on June 10, 2025, reports emerged that he won't even be there as a commentator — which he has now confirmed. Confidence in his own credentials Despite this setback, Nick clearly believes in his commentating abilities, telling the Guardian: 'I know I'm a great commentator. All I've done for 20 years is play, study and breathe this sport. 'I also think tennis needs commentators who say things that not everyone says'. He argued that his extensive experience on the professional circuit, including victories over some of the sport's greatest players, sets him apart from other pundits. Nick Kyrgios breaks silence on split with ex-girlfriend Costeen Hatzi as Wimbledon finalist reveals new look Criticism of the BBC and his replacement Nick didn't shy away from questioning the BBC's decision, describing his exclusion as 'unfortunate' and insisting: 'it's probably their loss more than mine'. Referencing his apparent replacement on the commentary team, Nick said: 'I understand they've got Chris Eubanks, but he hasn't beaten the greatest of all time multiple times. 'When someone's beaten Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic and has incredible insights, it's very strange you wouldn't want that person adding knowledge to tennis fans'. Eubanks' best run at Wimbledon came in 2023, when he stunned the likes of Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas before losing in five sets to Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. I know I'm a great commentator. All I've done for 20 years is play, study and breathe this sport Nick Kyrgios But Nick hasn't shut the door on working for the BBC again at some point in the future, explaining: "I'm sure our paths will cross again. "I only ever want to add humour, some knowledge and some great atmosphere." Nick on Wimbledon Despite his disappointment, Nick expressed his enduring affection for Wimbledon, recalling his breakthrough on the Grand Slam stage at the event in 2014 and describing it as 'the pinnacle of tennis'. He also acknowledged feeling somewhat out of place at the tournament, saying: 'I definitely feel like a snowman in the desert there, but I enjoy it'. Although Nick has now pulled out of this year's Roland Garros and Wimbledon, he is determined to resume playing this year. He added: "Yes, for sure. I'm definitely playing the US swing and I'll take it one day at a time." 3 Nick's last match at Wimbledon was losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic Credit: Getty Nick's hiring by the BBC in 2024 was met with criticism by senior MPs and women's campaigners. Women and equalities committee chair Caroline Nokes said the broadcaster should "hang its head in shame". A BBC statement at the time said: "We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only. "He has provided similar services to other major sports broadcasters in recent months. "The legal process he was involved in has concluded, is well documented, and he has spoken about it publicly." In February 2023, Nick admitted to assaulting ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari. But a magistrate in Canberra, Australia, said the 2021 incident was 'a single act of stupidity or frustration' — sparing the sports star from receiving a criminal record. The BBC is yet to issue an official public explanation for its decision.
