NRL integrity unit investigates alleged press box incident between Warriors assistant coach and journalist
The NRL Integrity Unit is investigating an alleged incident in the press box between a journalist for Guardian Australia and New Zealand Warriors assistant coach Richard Agar during the season opener against Canberra in Las Vegas.
Rugby league reporter John Davidson, an Australian based in the UK who was in the US to cover the match as a freelancer, was allegedly pushed in the throat by Agar and verbally abused.
The incident was alleged to have occurred during half-time at Allegiant Stadium when Canberra led the Warriors 16-4. The Raiders ran out 30-8 winners over the Kiwi club.
New Zealand Warriors chief executive Cameron George said on Monday morning he was made aware 'an alleged incident at half-time involving assistant coach Richard Agar and an English journalist John Davidson from the Guardian' after the match.
'This morning I had the opportunity to speak with the NRL integrity unit. They are working through their process which will include us,' George said.
'I hope their process will be efficient and prompt so we can provide clarity on the matter.'
Agar was contacted through the Warriors but the club said there 'won't be any further comment at this stage'.
Agar is an English coach and former player who last held a head coaching role at Leeds Rhinos until he stepped down in 2022. He joined the Warriors the following year.

The British and Irish Lions tour of Australia - with their warm-up matches against the Waratahs and Invitational AU & NZ side both on the same day as Wales' Tests in Japan - also made moving the kick-off time complicated, with the Lions matches kicking off at 11am UK time. An announcement had been expected on a TV deal last week, although the situation with the kick-off time is understood to have delayed things. Horner, who had a miserable home race as he saw Max Verstappen retired on the opening lap after being hit, remains stunned that the two McLarens can operate as they are. He said: "What's truly impressive, and for me I can't see any other team being able to do it, is when you look at how close Oscar is able to run behind Lando with a car fat on fuel at the beginning of the race. He's basically making love to his exhaust pipe for lap after lap after lap, and the tyres are not dying. "I mean, that to me is, you know, that is their advantage. They've managed to create a car that really protects its tyres very well and obviously has a good balance. I can't see any other car that would be able to follow that closely and not grain the front tyres or the rear tyres. I don't really understand." McLaren are now 200 points clear in the teams' standings whilst it looks like a straight shootout between Piastri and Norris for the title, even at this stage of the season. It would be McLaren's first drivers' title since Lewis Hamilton in 2008 if they did top the standings. Norris responded impressively to his DNF in Canada and closes on his team-mate with a third win of the season as he said: "We had a great battle, that's for sure! It was a lot of fun. For me, a lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar."
