Taine Basham eyes Wales recall after Dragons exit to Cardiff
The dynamic back rower has left Rodney Parade for the Arms Park after seven seasons, 109 appearances and 21 tries for the club. The 25-year-old from Talywain has previously been on the radar of English clubs but it is a desire to force his way back into the Test frame that led to a Cardiff switch. Basham, an explosive openside or number eight, won the last of his 17 caps off the bench against England in 2024 and is currently behind Jac Morgan and Tommy Reffell in the pecking order at 7 and Taulupe Faletau and Aaron Wainwright at 8. He hopes that a fresh club challenge can help him return to the form that saw him impress against New Zealand, South Africa and Australia in the 2021 autumn internationals. IMPRESSIVE: Taine Basham caught the eye for Wales against New Zealand in 2021 (Image: David Davies) 'My rise to international rugby was fairly quick and I haven't been in recent squads,' said Basham, who played at the 2023 World Cup. 'A new environment and set of peers will hopefully be good for me because I don't have the number of caps that I thought I would have by now. 'I've seen a lot of people who have stayed at the Dragons for all of their career but I felt that I needed something different and a change of scene. 'I'm going to focus on getting back to the form of 2021 when I played well against the southern hemisphere teams because I am desperate to get back in that Welsh set-up.' Basham signed a one-year contract extension in April 2024 after interest from Saracens, yet it wasn't just Wales ambitions that led to the Cardiff switch. The back rower might not be available to experience some good-natured jibes from the terrace when the Blue and Blacks look to extend their 19-game winning streak over the Dragons on Friday, October 17. SWITCH: Taine Basham has left the Dragons for Cardiff (Image: Gareth Everett) 'It was the game that I looked for first when the fixture list came out but we are expecting another baby boy around mid-October,' said Basham, who has a three-year-old son Tomas with his partner Giovanna. 'Whatever happens, happens. We've got the derby at the Arms Park that I will hopefully be involved in and I just look forward to a very 'warm welcome' whenever I do make the return to Rodney Parade!' Basham consistently caught the eye after being given his Dragons debut under Bernard Jackman at the Scarlets in January, 2018. He is one of just seven players to have scored a hat-trick for the club – in a superb display against Castres in 2019 as Wales coach Wayne Pivac watched on – and Jason Forster is the only back rower to have crossed more times. 'I was at the Dragons since I was 14 and made some really good connections and friendships,' said Basham. 'I've got so many fond memories and all of the staff have been so good to me all the way through, especially James Chapron, who was my academy manager. I've met so many good people and will stay in touch. 'I was at the Dragons for seven seasons and a big target was to get my name on the board in the Bisley Room for 100 appearances. I'm proud to have done that.'

Fognini, who has not won a tour level match this year, was driven to distraction during the contest, at one point, snapping his racquet over his knee and tossing it away. Moutet, 26, went on to win the encounter 6-4 6-7 6-3, booking a round two berth against top seed Alexander Zverev. After Fognini sliced a backhand wide, Moutet fist pumped and pointed to his head in celebration. As the pair shook hands at the net, Fognini held on for a little longer than is customary. After Moutet gave him a brief glance, the former world No9 continued to glare in his direction. The fiery star then said in French "Regarde-moi, petit cochon!" - meaning "Look at me, you little pig!" Moutet ignored the barb, instead walking back onto court to soak up the applause of the crowd. There was no love lost between the duo, with Fognini sometimes proving to be a tricky opponent for the legendary Scot. Murray infamously told the flamboyant Italian to "shut up" during a heated Shanghai encounter in 2019. Fognini confirmed in Rome last month that this will be his final year on tour. Asked for his highlights at his home tournament, the world No117 said: "One is for sure the victory in the night against Andy Murray when he was No. 1 in the world. "This one is in the special place, especially here in Rome, for sure. I'd say it's top three in my career. "I live for [those] moments. My character is like that. I play with passion, and sometimes too much. "But I think when I was playing my best tennis here, I think the crowd was really happy to see me beating Andy. I beat Gael (Monfils), I beat (Joe-Wilfried) Tsonga, I beat a lot of good players." 6 Andy Murray famously clashed with Fognini in 2019 Credit: Getty

Four Chelsea players brutally axed from Club World Cup squad by Enzo Maresca
Chelsea travel to the Club World Cup this summer to face LAFC, Flamengo and Espérance in the US and Blues boss Enzo Maresca has already made some brutal calls when it comes to his squad Chelsea have axed almost £150m worth of talent from their Club World Cup squad including Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix. The Blues are set to travel over to the US over the coming days as they get their tournament underway. Enzo Maresca 's side will take on MLS side LAFC in the group stage ahead of clashes with Flamengo and Tunisian outfit Esperance. Ahead of the tournament, the Blues boss has made a number of brutal decisions when it comes to his squad. £50m man Raheem Sterling has been left at home following his dreadful loan spell with Arsenal last season. £45m signing Joao Felix has also been axed. The Portuguese forward only returned to Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis last summer but was sent out on loan to AC Milan after just a few months. Defender Axel Disasi is also among those to have been omitted after spending the second-half of last season with Aston Villa. However, the most surprising call is potentially the decision to drop goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. The Serbian was expected to step up after Chelsea's failure to sign French stopper Mike Maignan from AC Milan. He performed excellently on loan with French side Strasbourg last term and would have provided competition for Chelsea's current crop of goalkeepers Robert Sánchez, Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders. But the West London side have reasoned that the Club World Cup represents an extension of the 2024/25 season so want consistency over their loanees - the majority of which have been left behind. The only exception to that rule is the addition of Andrey Santos who has returned to the club ahead of the tournament. A number of clubs are now interested in signing Petrovic permanently, according to The Telegraph. The 25-year-old was signed from New England Revolution in 2023 and made 31 appearances across his debut campaign before moving to Strasbourg on loan. He remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2030. Meanwhile, Maresca has already pointed to his desire to add the Club World Cup to the Conference League title that Chelsea have already won. He said: 'When you are at Chelsea, your goal is always to win. 'Our goal – each and every single game – will always be to try to win them all. You need to see it [replicating coaches of years gone by] as a source of fantastic motivation. When we're there, that will be one of our goals: to try to win it.'
