Deputy critically injured in southwestern Minnesota crash

A deputy in southwestern Minnesota is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash over the weekend.
According to the Nobles County Sheriff's Office
, the crash occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 90 in Dewald Township.
Officials say a 63-year-old Sioux Falls, South Dakota woman driving a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling westbound on the interstate when she collided with a 2023 Dodge Durango squad car operated by deputy Arnold Waldner, 30, of Worthington.
Waldner was taken to an area hospital where he, as of Monday, remains in critical condition. The other driver, who suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, was also taken to an area hospital.
Details on the circumstances surrounding the crash are limited. The Minnesota State Patrol says alcohol was not involved.
Waldner has been with the sheriff's office for two years. A fund account has been set up for Waldner and his family at 1st State Bank Southwest in Worthington.
Nobles County is located east of Sioux Falls along the Minnesota-Iowa border.

Jun. 5—A two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon involving a semi on Interstate-90 sent one to the hospital and congested traffic for a time. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash took place early Thursday afternoon at around 12:47 p.m. and included one of the vehicles. A 2023 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Michael William Kiesler, 62 of Waseca, was left on its side and the 2025 Kenworth semi driven by James Arthur Ward, 59, of Roland, Iowa settled part way in the ditch off of the westbound lane of I-90. Both vehicles were traveling westbound on I-90 at the time of the crash, which happened just east of Fourth Street NW. Kiesler was transported to St. Mary's Hospital Rochester with non-life threatening injuries while Ward was uninjured. The Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance responded.

Several juveniles were reportedly throwing frozen water bottles from multiple different vehicles in different areas of Leander. Bottles were thrown from the sunroof of a white 2014 Dodge Durango near San Gabriel Parkway and County Road 270 in Leander, and from the truck beds of a lifted two-tone white-and-gray pickup and a dark-colored pickup with a chrome brush guard along North Bagdad Road. Police say several other incidents were also reported in Georgetown and other parts of Williamson County. Some of the bottles that were recovered were purchased from a Circle K. The incident caused damage to many windshields, headlights, and mirrors. Two people also suffered injuries to the face. As recreational cannabis becomes more and more accessible in Minnesota, law enforcement is dealing with the complicated issue of determining when someone is driving high. A 2024 AAA survey found that nearly 85% of pot users say they drove the same day as they used. Those surveyed also said they used within an hour of driving. A Minnesota pilot program on cheek swab testing found that 87% of those pulled over for suspected driving under the influence of drugs tested positive for at least one drug, the most common being marijuana. Many might not know how cannabis impacts their driving abilities. "A lot of what we do is educating the public on that. The laws come very fast, they are confusing, so that is part of our job as well," said Sgt. Tyler Milless with the Minnesota State Patrol. For the cheek swab test, troopers are looking for what's called Delta-9. "The oral fluid device only tests for the active ingredient in cannabis, for Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol," said Milless. "Delta-9 is the primary ingredient in cannabis. That is what causes impairment." But the swab test is not admissible in court. "If there is suspected products or substances other than alcohol, law enforcement would apply for a search warrant and obtain a blood or urine sample from that driver," said Milles. One way drivers might end up having a search warrant issued for their blood or urine is that the marijuana is not stored in the vehicle in the legal way. "Our law is very clear if it is not in the original container or it's been open, it has be in the trunk or furthest most back area of the car," said Milles.
