Mamelodi Sundowns found the right emotions in Fifa Club World Cup triumph, says Miguel Cardoso
Iqraam Rayners celebrates after scoring the only goal for Mamelodi Sundowns against Ulsan HD. Photo: AFP Image: AFP BRING on Borussia Dortmund, right? Following their 1-0 victory over Ulsan HD in the Fifa Club World Cup opener early Wednesday morning South African time in Orlando, Florida, Mamelodi Sundowns can be excused for being cock-a-hoop ahead of a match they ordinarily would be dreading. When the draw for this extended global spectacle was made and the South African champions were drawn into Group F, the one match that stood out as a toughie was the one against the German giants – Dortmund. Football is, however, pretty fickle at the top, and the opening results of the Club World Cup have not been what many would have predicted. Sundowns are top of the table after beating their South Korean opposition, while Dortmund are joint second with Fluminense of Brazil – the two teams having played to a goalless draw. Masandawana face Dortmund in Cincinnati on Saturday evening (6pm SA time start), and are sure to be full of confidence they can give as good as it takes against the Europeans. They were good value for their 1-0 win over Ulsan courtesy of an Iqraam Rayners goal – the striker having actually found the net on three occasions in the first half. But two of his goals were ruled out by the VAR, the first because the ball had touched his arm before going in, and the other due to him having been in an offside position when Lucas Ribeiro Costa threaded through a killer pass. Next Stay Close ✕ Coach Miguel Cardoso was understandably smiling from ear to ear post-match when he addressed the media, the Portuguese mentor happy to have somewhat laid the ghost of their CAF Champions League final defeat by Pyramids FC to rest. 'We are very happy to be in this experience, fulfilling dreams, and making it an objective of winning a game at a Fifa Club World Cup in this new format of the tournament. It's not easy to achieve victory, it was a long way until this moment,' he said. 'As time goes by, having a margin of 1-0 in the scoreboard, normally there will be an intention to keep the result, so the last minutes, we didn't play as much as we'd like. 'But we created chances, and we're happy for the first win of the tournament. I'm happy for the players and the joy they give to the country, their families and to the club.' Cardoso was understandably delighted with his team's first-half showing in a match whose kick-off was delayed by an hour due to adverse weather conditions, the delay coming after the teams had already walked onto the field. 'We made a very wonderful first half. It was important that we could keep the pace and not go away from the game-plan to try and score the second goal, which was small details, centimetres... we could not do it.' Cardoso continued to shower his team with praise. 'We used a lot of energy in the right way, before, during and after.

Kolisi hails Proteas triumph as Boks assemble for high-stakes 2025 campaign
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is back in familiar territory and fired up for another demanding international season. As the team completes their second week of training in Johannesburg, Kolisi spoke of the emotional value of reunion and the excitement of getting back to work with old teammates. 'It's always tough to say goodbye at the end of a season, so being back together is very special,' said Kolisi. The flanker praised the intensity of training sessions and the team's focus ahead of the historic clash against the Barbarians — their first ever on South African soil. He also expressed enthusiasm about seeing injured veterans like Lood de Jager rejoin the group, noting that team spirit is already high. Away from rugby, Kolisi made a point to celebrate South African sport more broadly. He congratulated the Proteas for their ICC World Test Championship victory over Australia, describing it as a 'fantastic' moment that united the nation. 'The way they won, especially after so many doubted them, was inspiring. It shows what South Africans can do when we believe.' Kolisi's message mirrors the Springboks' own mantra of unity, resilience, and pride as they aim to build on their World Cup legacy and set new standards this season. The match between the Barbarians and Springboks will be followed by back-to-back Tests against Italy – first at Loftus in Pretoria on 5 July, and then at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on 12 July. The mid-year match schedule series will then conclude with a clash against Georgia in Nelspruit on 19 July, a side known for their physicality and scrummaging power. Proteas ‘overwhelmed' by welcome from fans, says captain Bavuma
Thousands of people turned up at OR Tambo International. Proteas captain Temba Bavuma and top-order batter Aiden Markram interacting with fans after returning home from the World Test Championship final in London. Picture: Alet Pretorius/Gallo Images Returning home to a rapturous welcome from fans on Wednesday, captain Temba Bavuma said the magnitude of the Proteas team's achievement in London last week had only really sunk in when he and his squad entered the arrivals haul at OR Tambo International. Bavuma admitted the Proteas were taken aback by the thousands of people who turned up at the airport to welcome the team home after they won the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's four days earlier. The victory ensured they ended a 27-year trophy drought for the national cricket side, who last won a championship final at the 1998 Champions Trophy tournament. 'It was quite overwhelming. I've never seen a lot of people like that (on arrival in SA) before,' Bavuma said. 'It was quite different to the last time we came back from a World Cup. We have a lot more happier faces this time. And I think for us as players – at least for myself – you don't really realise what you've done, but to start to interact with people back home, to see the emotion and to hear the things they're saying really gives us a proper insight into what we've done. 'So we're proud, obviously, as a team to have been able to achieve something like this, but we're even happier that we've made our people proud. 'I think the biggest thing if you look at our team and the guys at the helm, we've done it the proper South African way, which is something I think is unique to this group, that we've embraced everything it means to be South African.' McKenzie delighted with coach and captain Sports minister Gayton McKenzie heaped particular praise on Bavuma, who we called 'the greatest SA captain in the history of Test cricket', as well as head coach Shukri Conrad, who he referred to as the 'best cricket coach in the whole world'. McKenzie lauded the squad for securing the global title, and he confirmed they would be invited to have dinner with President Cyril Ramaphosa following their historic victory. 'You must not underestimate what you've achieved, both on and off the field, and what you've done for South Africa,' McKenzie told the players. 'You represent who we are and who we aspire to be, and you are true champions.' Another chance for fans Supporters who could not make it to the airport on Wednesday will have another opportunity to celebrate with the Proteas team on Thursday at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton between 1pm and 3pm. The first 100 fans to arrive at the event will receive an exclusive WTC Champions shirt. There will also be spot giveaways throughout the celebratory event, and one supporter will be invited on stage for a photo with the national squad.
