Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder
As Iowa baseball retools its roster this offseason following a relatively promising 33-22-1 campaign this spring that eventually fell short of making the NCAA Tournament, the Hawkeyes got a commitment from former Wagner College outfielder Bryce Phelps in the transfer portal.
The Denver, Iowa, native began his collegiate career at Southeastern Community College and spent each of the last two seasons with Wagner.
As a junior for the Seahawks, Bryce appeared in 33 games, where he batted .195 over 177 at-bats, including 15 hits and eight RBIs.
This past season, Phelps had a breakout campaign by starting 51 games and slashing a batting average of .399, an on-base percentage of .482, and a slugging percentage of .423, with 75 hits, 14 doubles, one home run, and 33 RBIs. Phelps' strikeout rate finished at just 11.7% in his 222 plate appearances and reached base via walk or hit by pitch in 14.0% of those appearances.
With his impressive 2025 season at Wagner, Philips earned himself a spot on the First Team All-Northeast Conference list.
'(It was) a combination of location, coaches, and teammates,' said Phelps in an interview with HawkeyeReport. 'Knowing that Iowa can be a place where I can go and compete with a bunch of guys that want to win, like my former Southeastern CC teammates Kooper Schulte and Caleb Wulf.'
'Just wanted to find the right fit at the highest level I could play at. The visit at Iowa was just as I remembered, felt like home. Having worked security at football games when I was at Southeastern Community College, I had a good feel for the outside of campus. Coach Heller and I had a great conversation. Talking about life, the program, and how I can fit in within the program as well. Talking to the coaches gave me the reassurance that I was wanted in the program. Having been recruited by them in high school and not working out I'm glad it circled back around.'
As for where Philips could land in the Hawkeyes' lineup, he will have a chance to earn one of the corner outfield spots with centerfielder Miles Risley returning and Kellen Strohmeyer in line to earn the other corner position.
Philips is just the third pickup for the Hawkeyes in the current transfer portal period, with Iowa likely to utilize the transfer pool as a valuable resource over the next few months while they patch up holes from their own departures.

Jared Jones' early go-ahead homer helps send LSU to CWS bracket final with a 9-5 win over UCLA

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jared Jones hit a go-ahead three-run homer before rain suspended play Monday night, freshman reliever Casan Evans pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings after play resumed Tuesday, and LSU advanced to its College World Series bracket final with a 9-5 victory over UCLA. The Tigers (50-15) next play Wednesday night against the winner of Tuesday night's elimination game between Arkansas and the Bruins (48-17). LSU, going for its second national championship in three years, needs one more win to reach the best-of-three finals starting Saturday. Advertisement LSU was up 5-3 at the end of the third inning Monday night when the game was suspended following a 2-hour, 53-minute delay. The Tigers had Evans (5-1) take over for starter Anthony Eyanson when play resumed. Evans, who pitched the ninth inning of a 4-1 win over Arkansas on Saturday, limited UCLA to four singles and struck out five. UCLA had two runners on base with one out when Evans turned the game over to Cooper Williams in the eighth. The Tigers had to get through some anxious moments when Williams walked the bases loaded and the Bruins pulled to 8-5 on Payton Brennan's groundout and Blake Balsz's infield single. Another walk reloaded the bases, prompting coach Jay Johnson to call on Chase Shores, who needed one pitch to get an inning-ending groundout. Jones' RBI single in the ninth gave the Tigers a four-run cushion, and Shores pitched a clean ninth to send the Bruins to their first loss in seven NCAA Tournament games. Advertisement The Tigers took a 7-3 lead in the fourth against freshman Wylan Moss, who gave up three hits and a walk and recorded only two outs. UCLA starter Landon Stump (6-2) had gone to the mound for the bottom of the first Monday night with a 3-0 lead, but it evaporated when Jones' three-run homer put the Tigers ahead 4-3. Jones' 21st homer of the season barely cleared the fence in right center and was the 63rd in his career, third most in program history. ___ AP college sports:

Notre Dame named in two Top 10 non-conference best matchups for 2025

Notre Dame named in two Top 10 non-conference best matchups for 2025 The 2025 college football season is inching closer and closer, and there are a slew of juicy non-conference matchups on tap. One of those clashes includes Notre Dame hosting Texas A&M, the back end of a home-and-home series that began last year. It's clearly a notable matchup, and ESPN analyst Greg McElroy named it No. 5 on his Top 10 list of non-conference games this fall. "Coach Mike Elko enters into the second year," McElroy said on his Always College Football podcast. "They get everybody back on the offensive line. The offense in general should be excellent. And their quarterback Marcel Reed should be a lot more advanced than he was last year. He didn't even play against Notre Dame in Week 1. So, now, that should be an incredible matchup when the Aggies head to South Bend there in the middle of September." Last season, Marcus Freeman's squad scored a 23-13 win in College Station, a game that featured the Irish leaning on their rushing attack. They compiled 198 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, with Jeremiyah Love leading the way with 91 yards and a score. Meanwhile, the Aggies had just 100 passing yards in the loss, though adding playmakers at receiver was a priority this offseason. So this should be a different Aggies offense in the rematch. The Irish have the fourth-best nonconference game, as well, according to McElroy. ND opens the season at Miami, a team McElroy is high on. Mario Cristobal has the Hurricanes set up to contend for the ACC title with the likes of Clemson. "Miami has restocked and reloaded," McElroy said. "Carson Beck is now their starting quarterback. They have great personnel on both lines of scrimmage. Mario Cristobal has a legitimate ACC title contender again this year. At least one of the top two teams in the ACC." The new season can't get here soon enough. Contact/Follow us @IrishWireND on X (Formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Notre Dame news, notes, and opinions.
