Canva now lets candidates use AI during interviews: What this means

India Todaya day ago

Canva has officially changed its technical interview process by introducing AI-assisted coding, allowing and even expecting candidates to use tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude, and Cursor during interviews for engineering roles. The move is a big change in how the company evaluates software engineers, aligning the hiring process with the tools its in-house developers already use on a daily basis.Until now, Canva's coding interviews, particularly for backend, frontend, and machine learning roles, relied heavily on conventional Computer Science Fundamentals assessments. These tests, which involved solving algorithm-based problems without any external help, were no longer the day-to-day reality at Canva as engineers now regularly depend on AI tools to navigate large codebases and accelerate development.advertisementRealising that this disconnect limited the company's ability to assess true on-the-job performance, Canva has now introduced what it calls "AI-Assisted Coding" interviews. Candidates are not only allowed but also encouraged to use AI during interviews. The company says that the idea is to understand how well they can collaborate with AI tools, how effectively they break down complex problems, refine machine-generated code, and make sound technical decisions.
Talking about the trials done for this, Canva head of platforms Simon Newton said, "Our AI-assisted interviews feel more engaging for both candidates and interviewers, and they are providing strong predictive signals about candidate performance. Most importantly, they are helping us identify engineers who can leverage AI thoughtfully and effectively. Exactly the kind of people we want building the future of visual communication," he said.advertisementThis change comes amid growing debate around the use of generative AI in hiring. While some companies continue to view AI in interviews as a form of cheating, Canva says it is trying to restrict AI use is counterproductive in an industry where such tools are already an integral part of development workflows. Instead, the company is prioritising transparency and encouraging candidates to use AI openly during interviews. The company revealed that candidates are now judged on how they guide the AI, evaluate its suggestions, and maintain production-level standards in their final solution. The interviews also test how well candidates debug flawed AI code and deal with unclear product requirements."Interestingly, candidates with minimal AI experience often struggled, not because they couldn't code, but because they lacked the judgment to guide AI effectively or identify when its suggestions were suboptimal," Newton said. "We believe the future belongs to engineers who can seamlessly blend human creativity and judgment with AI capabilities," he added.

Air India plane crash: LIC eases procedure of policy settlements for victims' families

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) on Friday announced a range of concessions to help ease the financial hardships faced by the families of those killed in the Air India flight Al 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. In a press release, LIC expressed grief over the deaths of passengers, crew members, and people on the ground who lost their lives in the tragedy. To provide financial relief to policyholders' nominees, LIC said it would expedite the processing of death claims and relax certain conditions normally required for settlements. — LICIndiaForever (@LICIndiaForever) As per the announcement, instead of a death certificate, LIC will accept any Government record confirming the policyholder's death due to the incident, or proof of compensation disbursed by the Central or state government or Air India authorities. Live Events The state-owned insurer assured that all efforts would be made to reach policyholders' families promptly and settle their dues at the earliest. Claimants in need of assistance can contact their nearest LIC branch, division, or Customer Zone. Additionally, a helpline, 022 68276827, has been set up to provide support and information. AI-171 crash: India's worst air disaster in nearly a decade The crash of Flight AI‑171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, is one of India's worst aviation disasters in nearly a decade. The aircraft, heading from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick, came down in a residential area just moments after takeoff, claiming 265 lives (230 passengers, 10 crew, 2 pilots, 5 doctors and others yet to be identified), with only one survivor confirmed. Eyewitnesses described the impact as sounding 'like an earthquake,' with thick black smoke engulfing the crash site and rescue teams struggling to reach the wreckage. The plane struck a hostel building near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, complicating rescue efforts amid intense heat, a large fuel blaze, and debris. Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that soaring temperatures and around 125,000 litres of fuel onboard made the crash unsurvivable. This tragic incident marks the first fatal crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since the model's inception and comes at a crucial time for Air India, which is undergoing a transformation under Tata Group's privatisation efforts.

Temasek joins Microsoft, BlackRock and MGX to develop AI infrastructure

Temasek has joined a consortium backed by Microsoft , BlackRock and tech investment company MGX to invest and expand artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to BlackRock's investor day presentation slides on Thursday. The Singapore state investment company has joined AI Infrastructure Partnership , a group that also includes BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners, the slides showed. AIP, formed in September with a goal to initially invest more than $30 billion in AI-related projects, is one of the world's largest efforts to invest in data centres and energy facilities needed to power AI applications such as ChatGPT. It aims to mobilise up to $100 billion including debt financing for such investments, which will focus on the United States. Temasek's participation comes after the Kuwait Investment Authority joined AIP earlier in June. The sovereign wealth fund of Kuwait was the first non-founder financial anchor investor to join the consortium, which also counts partners including Nvidia and billionaire Elon Musk's xAI. "Temasek's investment in the AI Infrastructure Partnership reflects our focus on the big shifts and trends of the future," Ravi Lambah, Temasek's head of strategic initiatives, said in an email to Reuters. "AI is potentially the most transformative and impactful technology for all sectors and businesses," he added. Temasek did not disclose financial details of the investment. The global investment company had a net portfolio value of S$389 billion ($304 billion) as of March 31, 2024, according to its website.
