The Indian Express will launch its Patna edition today, eleventh across the country
The Indian Express, with its unique blend of investigative and explanatory journalism and commitment to fairness and accuracy, now comes to Bihar.
On Monday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will grace the launch of the Patna edition of The Indian Express, the 11th edition of the daily published from centres across India.
The launch of the Patna edition is taking place in the month that marks 50 years of an inglorious chapter in Indian democracy — the imposition of Emergency in 1975. And it was The Indian Express, under Ramnath Goenka, which took the lead in opposing the suspension of fundamental rights, the muzzling of the Press and the excesses of the authorities. It published a blank editorial to protest the removal of content by censors.
Goenka was very close to Jayaprakash Narayan who gave a clarion call against Indira Gandhi's government from the Ramlila Grounds in Delhi in June, a year after his call for Sampoorna Kranti from the Gandhi Maidan in Patna.
Incidentally, Nitish Kumar was among the youth leaders who responded to JP's call and played a key role in opposing the draconian measures that Emergency ushered in.
Announcing the launch of the Patna edition, Viveck Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director of The Indian Express Group, said, 'For us, this is also a homecoming. Our founder, Ramnath Goenka Ji, was born in Darbhanga and had close ties with Jayaprakash Narayan. Bihar has always been crucial in the national discourse. Launching our Patna edition is a milestone for The Indian Express because the people in Bihar, known for their acute political sense and social conscience, deserve the best of journalism that does justice to their needs and aspirations.'
Currently, The Indian Express publishes from 10 centres: Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Vadodara.
The Patna edition is being launched months before Bihar heads to crucial Assembly elections.
Bihar's rich cultural and political history and recent strides in governance — from 50% quota for women in panchayats to 35% reservation in government jobs — make it a significant state to watch.

Nishikant Dubey hits out at Rahul Gandhi, asks whether Nehru family
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has hit out at Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, asking whether his family 'imposed the 1962 war on India by supporting China.' In his 'X' post, Nishikant Dubey accused former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of creating a new slogan of the 'non-aligned countries'. Non-aligned countries were a group of those newly independent countries that neither joined the US nor the Soviet (modern-day Russia) bloc during the Cold War era. Sharing glimpses of the declaration of the 1961 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Belgrade Conference, Nishikant Dubey stated that the conference 'ordered' the United Nations to make China its only member. The BJP MP stated that India was isolated from Russia and the US, due to which neither country came to its rescue during the 1962 war with China. Patna (Bihar) [India], June 9 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, launched a sharp attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday, questioning his silence over the failure to include the 65 per cent state reservation quota in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. In a post on X, Yadav questioned Nitish Kumar's lack of response to his earlier letter, saying, 'Did Nitish Ji not reply to my letter because he does not have an answer or does he do this habitually or the officers do not show him the letters?' He also targeted the NDA leadership, including Union Minister Chirag Paswan, and leaders Jitan Ram Manjhi and Upendra Kushwaha, for what he described as 'usurpation of the rights of Dalits, tribals, backwards and extremely backwards classes.' 'Why are the parties beating the drum of social justice, and on whose strength is the Modi government is running, unsuccessful in getting the 65% reservation limit increased by our government included in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution? On Friday, the RJD leader reaffirmed his party's stand, saying, 'From the start, we are on the side of the reservation. The matter is in court, and we took part in protests earlier. If the need arises, we will fight again.' Earlier, Tejashwi Yadav launched a sharp attack on the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government on Friday, accusing it of failing on law and order and allowing the health system to collapse. Speaking to reporters, Yadav said, 'Criminals are on the loose in Bihar. Many incidents are constantly coming to light, and the police seem helpless. The government is also sleeping, and it seems as if they have nothing to do with anything.., rape happens and the Deputy CM makes promises, this is the situation. This is maha-jungle raj.' He also criticised the state's health infrastructure, particularly the conditions at AIIMS Patna and PMCH. 'If you go to the hospital, then there is no action taken against the corrupt officials. Now also, you can see there is work in action to protect Dr. I.S. Thakur. Why? I only ask one question: that retired official who was granted an extension as soon as our government collapsed.
