There have been a lot of rumors and speculation growing about the potential that the Boston Red Sox will shop their star third baseman, Alex Bregman, at the trade deadline.
With Bregman reportedly willing to negotiate a contract extension, this idea doesn't make too much sense, but there's still a possibility the Red Sox want to cut ties with him to save some money and add valuable prospects.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently urged the Detroit Tigers to pursue a trade for Bregman if the Red Sox decide to shop him this season.

Maddie Malhotra/Boston"Still, while the Tigers probably won't pursue Bregman after being spurned, they should. They, much like the Yankees, are left-handed heavy," Rotman wrote. "Adding Bregman's bat would allow the Tigers to comfortably split up lefty sluggers Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene, and would give a young team a battle-tested veteran to lean on in their postseason push.
"Bregman would fit perfectly while reuniting with former manager A.J. Hinch. It'd be risky, knowing that Bregman can opt out in a few months if he truly doesn't want to be there, but adding a player of Bregman's caliber could be the difference in a pennant race. The Tigers should be all-in. If Bregman is available, there's a good chance they can't do any better."
At the end of the day, I don't think the Red Sox should shop Bregman, but if they decide to, a deal to the Tigers would make sense.
Detroit was one of the top suitors for Bregman in free agency. A few months later, the Tigers are even better than expected and could still use the help at the hot corner.
Adding Bregman to this Tigers roster would take it over the top. Detroit could go from a streaking team to a legit World Series contender in one move.

When will the sale of the Lakers officially close?

Ever since the Buss family agreed to sell a majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, the CEO of Guggenheim Partners and the primary owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, there has been plenty of excitement about what lies ahead for the Lakers. Fans believe that the days of penny-pinching are over and that the franchise will start sparing no expense in order to bring in the best people, as much as the NBA's salary cap will allow. One question many have had is when the sale will officially be completed and how long the transition will take. According to ESPN, the sale is expected to close sometime in the second half of this year. "Businessman Mark Walter's acquisition of the majority ownership stake of the Los Angeles Lakers, in a deal that puts the franchise valuation at $10 billion, is expected to close in the third or fourth quarter of this year." Walter has owned the Dodgers since 2012, and during that time, they have finished first in the National League West while winning two of the last five World Series championships. They have become one of the best, if not the best, organizations in all of Major League Baseball in terms of how they have been run from top to bottom. The hope is that the Lakers will soon operate in a similar manner, instead of being allegedly run like a mom-and-pop small business, as they have for years under the ownership of the Buss family.

Jeanie Buss and Mark Walter issue statements on sale of Lakers

Last week, it was announced that the Buss family had agreed to sell a majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, who has been the primary owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2012. Walter has guided the Dodgers to lots of success, including two World Series championships, in recent years, and fans have been excited about the Lakers earning similar results in the years to come. The Lakers are reportedly being sold at a valuation of $10 billion, which makes it the most expensive sale of a sports franchise anywhere in the world. The Buss family has owned the Lakers since 1979, when the late Dr. Jerry Buss purchased them from previous owner Jack Kent Cooke. Dr. Buss' daughter, Jeanie Buss, who has been their governor for many years, issued a statement on the transaction on Wednesday. Via ESPN: "From the day our father purchased the Lakers, we have been determined to deliver what the City of Los Angeles deserves and demands: a team that is committed to winning -- relentlessly -- and to doing so with passion and with style," Jeanie Buss said. "I have gotten to know Mark very well over time and been delighted to learn how he shares those same values. For the last four years, Mark has been an excellent partner to us, and we are thrilled to keep working with him to continue the Lakers' extraordinary legacy." Walter also commented on the sale. "Since Dr. Jerry Buss first purchased the team in 1979, they have truly set the standard for basketball in one era after another, which is why you can find people anywhere in the world wearing Lakers shirts and jerseys," Walter said. When the elder Buss owned the Lakers from 1979 until his death in 2013, they won 10 NBA championships and missed the playoffs just twice. But since then, they have failed to reach the playoffs seven times, and despite winning it all in 2020, some would say the franchise has lost quite a bit of its former luster. But now Walter will have the 26-year-old Luka Doncic to build around, so perhaps another world title won't be that far off.

Cubs Called 'Best Fit' In Potential Trade For $45 Million Star

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are one of the better teams in the league this season, but their roster still has some glaring holes. Most notably, the holes on the Cubs roster are seen in the pitching staff. The starting rotation has been crushed with injuries, including a season-ending injury to Justin Steele. The bullpen was never the best unit in the league, but it's been a bit worse than expected. Chicago will need to turn to the trade block to find the right fits if it wants to be a World Series favorite down the stretch. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel recently listed the Cubs as one of the best fits in a potential trade for Kansas City Royals star pitcher Seth Lugo. More"Lugo has posted mid-3.00s or lower ERAs for five seasons despite having below-average fastball velocity and good-not-great strikeout rates. His ability to strand runners and limit hard contact comes in part due to his nine different pitches," They wrote. "With a Nathan Eovaldi-type contract awaiting Lugo in free agency, Kansas City could opt to move him, especially if Cole Ragans' injured shoulder doesn't improve." Lugo has been spectacular with the Royals this season, but Kansas City has struggled as a whole. With Cole Ragans on the sidelines and a deep pitching staff, the Royals could comfortably trade Lugo before his contract expires. This would be a win-now move from the Cubs. But Chicago is no stranger to making these kinds of moves this season. The front office could package a few prospects together to land a top-of-the-rotation talent like Lugo with the hopes of extending his contract at the end of the season.
