The Houston Texans will begin their quest back to playoff contention with a showdown between master and protégé out west in an interconference battle. Nick Caley might have left Los Angeles for H-Town, but his career as the Texans' offensive coordinator begins back at SoFi Stadium.
With the NFL schedule finalized, the Texans will visit Matthew Stafford, Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1 to start a gauntlet over the first month of the season, which includes a primetime battle on Monday Night Football against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2 in what would be the hope opener.
The Texans will close out the regular season at NRG Stadium for the first time since 2020, hopefully locking up a playoff bid over the Indianapolis Colts on a to be determined date.
While the Texans retooled their offensive line this offseason, adding veterans Trent Brown and Cam Robinson, as well as rookie Aireontae Ersery, there are no guarantees for success. Houston still has holes on the interior and plans to trot out at least two members of the unit that allowed 56 total sacks in 2025.
By the strength of schedule metric alone -- using both last year's win totals and this year's projected win totals -- the Texans have one of the easier paths back to the postseason. Despite five matchups with first-place teams, Houston remains in the chatter for a third straight AFC South title.

The Rockets will be a much more expensive team in the NBA's 2025-26 season, owing largely to salary increases for Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green. Depending on moves this offseason, Houston could be in luxury tax territory. The Rockets also have at least two younger prospects — Reed Sheppard and Cam Whitmore — that they would like to find more minutes for. With those types of considerations in mind, the 2025-26 Rockets might not have as much room in the budget for veteran players near the end of the bench. In 2024-25, Jeff Green, Jae'Sean Tate, and Aaron Holiday made $8.0 million, $7.6 million, and $4.7 million, respectively. While Houston seems to have some level of interest in retaining each of them, it might require a paycut for those players to stick around. Per Kelly Iko of The Athletic: A larger chunk of playing time for Sheppard would diminish veteran Aaron Holiday's role. Holiday emerged as a trusted option under Udoka over the past two seasons. He has a $4.9 million team option for next season, but the Rockets, who have expressed a desire to retain him, would likely wait and see how the rest of the roster pans out, along with the market, before circling back. Jeff Green and Tate, both of whom Houston is fond of, fall into a similar category. There's a possibility that only veteran minimum contracts would be available. Green recently expressed interest in a return, and Tate is a five-year NBA veteran who has only played for the Rockets over that time. All three are beloved in Houston's locker room and looked upon fondly as veteran leaders and mentors. Green was a consistent rotation player as recently as 2023-24, and Tate and Holiday had rotation stints in 2024-25. The latter two are accomplished defensively, where Houston ranked in the NBA's top five last season. So, there is definitely appeal to having them around as insurance options for head coach Ime Udoka. However, because of the changing composition of the roster around them, each might need to take a paycut in order to stick around. Time will tell if they choose to do so. The Rockets are allowed to negotiate with their own free agents as soon as the 2025 NBA Finals conclude, and negotiations with other teams and players across the league can begin on June 30. Minimum salaries are slotted according to NBA experience, though even the highest (for a player with 10+ years of experience, such as Green) is still below $4 million annually. Laremy Tunsil displaying leadership while away from the Commanders
New Washington Commanders left tackle Laremy Tunsil may not have been with the team throughout the voluntary offseason program. Still, he found ways to exhibit veteran leadership, specifically with rookie first-round pick Josh Conerly Jr. Natalie Spala of ABC News 7 in Washington, D.C., recently caught up with offensive line coach Bobby Johnson after OTAs this week in Ashburn. Johnson revealed that Tunsil was the first person to reach out to Conerly after the Commanders selected him 29th overall in the 2025 NFL draft. Advertisement "He was the first guy to reach out to Josh when Josh got drafted," Johnson said. "So, you automatically see a guy who is willing to be a leader and how he can help this young guy. I'm excited to see how fast that accelerates Josh's development. Because here is a guy who has done it at a high level, who's very talented, that can kind of give Josh the answers to the test." This is interesting because, reportedly, Tunsil's play wasn't the issue in Houston. Here's what Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote about the Tunsil trade from the Texans' perspective: In short, DeMeco Ryans feels like the culture he wants across the board is in place on defense but not on offense and that a toxic atmosphere in the offensive line room was a root cause. And while Tunsil wasn't a bad guy (he was actually well-liked), he wasn't the type of leader to turn the ship—and needed to be as one of its captains. Essentially, Houston preferred going younger at offensive tackle and didn't want to give Tunsil (31 in August) another lucrative extension. The Commanders were thrilled to land Tunsil to protect quarterback Jayden Daniels' blind side. Washington believes Tunsil has several years of high-quality play remaining. Advertisement When Tunsil reached out to Conerly after the draft, it was a positive sign that put some of those rumors from his time with Houston to bed. Tunsil will be in town with the team next week as the Commanders hold their mandatory minicamp before breaking for training camp, which begins next month.
