Torpedo effect: Victus, Marucci and Chandler all begin selling the uniquely shaped bats

New York Times01-04-2025

After the New York Yankees hit 15 home runs (nine of which came with torpedo bats) this past weekend, bat makers are looking to cash in on the offensive explosion. Bat companies Victus, Marucci, and Chandler Bats have all begun selling torpedo bats through their websites, with prices ranging from $199 to $239.

At Victus, customers can purchase three different torpedo bats, including the version used by Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe. The bats went on sale on the site at 7 p.m. ET Monday night. In the Yankees' opening series against the Milwaukee Brewers, Volpe hit two home runs using a torpedo bat.
Jared Smith, the founder and CEO of Victus, said the torpedo bats have been the 'most talked about thing in the baseball bat world since we started 15 years ago.' Smith estimated at least half of the pros who use Victus have at minimum reached out for either more info or their own torpedo model.
'Any time you have that kind of success with a new product that looks kind of funky and has a cool name — I mean, it's baseball season and it's hot right now,' Smith said. 'For us, I definitely think there's something to it. As far as how big it got, nine home runs in one game certainly changed that a little bit.'
Marucci is selling a torpedo bat used by New York Mets star Francisco Lindor. The site explains that their torpedo bats move more mass into the barrel's sweet spot, which 'maximizes the force exerted on the ball.'
Through Chandler, any of their bats can be converted into a torpedo model, including the version used by Yankees superstar Aaron Judge. But don't expect to see Judge swinging a torpedo bat anytime soon. He told reporters on Sunday that he has no interest in using one.
'What I did the past couple of seasons speaks for itself,' Judge said. 'Why try to change something if you have something that's working?'

Free agent Za'Darius Smith hoping to land back with Lions

Free agent Za'Darius Smith hoping to land back with Lions Former Detroit Lions edge pass rusher Za'Darius Smith made it known that he would prefer to end up back in Honolulu Blue this season. Smith, who was cut by the Lions in March, played eight games for the team in the 2024-25 season after being acquired from the Cleveland Browns following the leg injury to Aidan Hutchinson. In those eight games, No. 99 totaled four sacks and 12 tackles on a defense that was reeling by season's end. 'We both know where I want to be,' Smith told USA TODAY Sports at the 2025 BET Awards. 'Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I'm there I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit.' Smith, 32, is also in a relationship with Detroit rapper Kash Doll, with whom he attended the BET Awards. The Lions didn't make any long-term investments in edge rushers in the offseason despite letting Smith go. However, Hutchinson has been fully cleared for his return to football and Smith says he would still want a chance to work with him directly. 'I'm still a veteran. He's still a young guy. I can help him with a lot of things. He's already great but as a player there are some tools that I know that I can help him with,' Smith said. 'And there are some things as a young guy that he can help me with.' Smith is a three-time Pro Bowler who spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Cleveland Browns before his half-season in Detroit. 'I'm going into Year 11. As a veteran (a championship) is the only thing that I'm missing,' Smith said. 'I did the sacks, All-Pro, Pro Bowl, so it's really just me getting a ring now and winning a championship.'

Yankees Announce Giancarlo Stanton Injury News Ahead of Royals Game

Yankees Announce Giancarlo Stanton Injury News Ahead of Royals Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The return of Giancarlo Stanton from dual-elbow tendonitis will be a welcome sight for Yankee fans, but it also may prove challenging for manager Aaron Boone. Advertisement Given the success of Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt, Boone has a lot of shuffling to do upon Stanton's return. Rice can platoon at catcher and first base but has only made five appearances at catcher since joining the Yankees last June. Despite a long and at-times puzzling injury timeline, the Yankees made a concrete announcement on Stanton that suggests the playoff hero's return is imminent. Yankees slugger Giancarlo Carchietta-Imagn Images Stanton will begin a Minor League rehab assignment tonight with Double-A Somerset Patriots, according to Bryan Hoch. This means Stanton will likely return in no more than two weeks, with each game serving as a means for the organization to see his game readiness. Advertisement Stanton was seen taking batting practice on May 7, and appeared to be swinging gingerly. Clearly, things have changed for the slugger, and the Yankees feel he's ready to come back. The Yankees have been dabbling with ways to accommodate Stanton's return while also clearing playing time for valuable hitters like Rice, Goldschmidt and Grisham. Goldschmidt was even seen taking reps at second base in batting practice last week, which would be a first in Paul Goldschmidt's nearly 2,000 career games, the bulk of which have been spent at first base. A possible solution is to alternate Rice and Stanton at DH based on lefty-righty splits, or see if the far-away situation of putting Rice at third, Jazz Chisholm Jr at second, Goldschmidt at first and Stanton at DH has any viability. Advertisement Either way, the logjam between Rice and Goldy at first is putting the Yankees in a pickle, but Stanton's return should be welcome nonetheless.
