Lady Vols defeat Eastern Kentucky in Midstate Classic
No. 7 Tennessee (26-4) defeated Eastern Kentucky (19-7), 8-0, Tuesday in the Midstate Classic at Ripley Sports Complex in Columbia, Tennessee.
The Lady Vols led, 2-0, in the second inning after senior catcher Sophia Nugent hit a two-run home run. Nugent, who went 2-for-2, also hit a grand slam in the third inning against the Colonels. Destiny Rodriguez went 1-for-1. She recorded one RBI and scored one run for Tennessee, which collected six hits in the contest. Taylor Pannell also went 1-for-3 and scored one run.
Tennessee pitchers Karlyn Pickens and Erin Nuwer combined for a one-hit shutout. Pickens (10-3) pitched four innings. She allowed one hit and three walks, while recording seven strikeouts. Pickens totaled 66 pitches., including 43 strikes, while Nuwer pitched one inning and recorded two strikeouts. Nuwer totaled 29 pitches, including 20 strikes, for Tennessee.
The Lady Vols are now 14-0 all time against the Colonels. Tennessee will return to action Saturday, opening a three-game SEC series against Arkansas at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. First pitch for game No. 1 is slated for 5:30 p.m. EDT and the game will be televised by SEC Network. The Lady Vols enter the series against the Razorbacks with a 10-0 home record.

Biles went after Gaines as the fairness in women's sports advocate reacted to a transgender pitcher competing in the Minnesota state softball championship. Cavaliers' Darius Garland has toe surgery, out 4-5 months
Cavaliers guard Darius Garland had surgery Monday on the injured left big toe that hampered him during Cleveland's exit from the playoffs. The Cavaliers said the procedure was performed by Dr. Nicholas Strasser at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, in consultation with team physician Dr. James Rosneck and Dr. Bob Anderson. The All-Star guard missed the final two games of the regular season and four games during the playoffs with the injury, which was described as a sprain. "Definitely wasn't myself. It was pretty uncomfortable but trying to do everything to win the game. It was frustrating because I wasn't 100 percent," Garland said after the Cavaliers lost to the Indiana Pacers in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Garland is expected to spend 4 to 5 months going through a progression of treatment and rehabilitation before resuming basketball activities by the start of training camp. Garland averaged 20.6 points and 6.7 assists during the regular season to help the Cavs finish atop the Eastern Conference. In just five playoff games, he dropped to 18 points and 5.2 assists per game, and while Cleveland won the two games against the Miami Heat that Garland sat out due to his toe, he also missed two of the four games that the Cavs dropped to the Pacers in the conference semifinals. Tyler Adams to miss US-Switzerland friendly because of foot injury
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — U.S. midfielder Tyler Adams will miss Tuesday night's friendly against Switzerland because of a foot injury. 'I hope it's not a big issue,' coach Mauricio Pochettino said Monday. 'I think we can manage in a good way and rest him a few days and then see if he can be ready for the Gold Cup.' Adams played the second half of Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey. The Americans open the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. They already are missing are Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Antonee Robinson, Sergiño Dest, Yunus Musah, Folarin Balogun and Gio Reyna. Some are hurt, some want time off and some will be at the Club World Cup. The U.S. will be trying to avoid its first four-game losing streak since dropping five straight in 2007.
