Funeral arrangements announced for Brenham girl swept away by floodwaters
BRENHAM, Texas (FOX 44) – Funeral arrangements have been announced for the Brenham girl who was swept away by floodwaters last week.
According to the obituary for ten-year-old Devah Marie Woods, funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Lewis Funeral Home and Allen Dave Funeral Home. Both the public viewing and funeral service will be held at the Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, located at 9180 Hwy 105 in Brenham.
All public viewing will take place on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., due to limited space at the church. Funeral services will last from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. and are reserved for immediate family, close friends, ministers, school officials, government servants, civic leaders, and church members.
The service will be broadcast live on the church website and their YouTtube channel starting at 1:45 p.m. for all who would like to join virtually.
Flowers can be delivered directly to the church on Saturday, May 17, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. If you would like to plant Memorial Trees in memory of Devah, you can click here.
This comes after the Brenham Independent School District said last week that third-grade Brenham Elementary student Devah Woods was reported missing following the severe weather on May 5. The City of Brenham confirmed on May 6 that Devah was found dead in Higgins Branch, between FM-2935 and Old Independence Road, following a two-day intensive search.

Bell County Emergency Management assessing storm damage
BELL COUNTY, Texas (FOX 44) – The Bell County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is assessing damage from two rounds of severe storms. According to county, these storms occured on Monday, May 26. These resulted in power outages, structural damage, and debris-covered roadways. The first round began around 7 a.m., followed by a second round around 8 p.m. Bell County Emergency Management (OEM), along with Bell County Road and Bridge and the Texas Department of Transportation, worked through the night to clear debris from roadways. The county says storms moved from west to east, producing heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and some hail. Wind gusts reached 80 to 85 miles per hour, knocking over trees and power lines and damaging homes and outbuildings. The county says no tornadoes have been confirmed. The Office of Emergency Management has not received any reports of major injuries. ONCOR crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. However, the county says this process may take time due to numerous downed power poles and lines. Property owners who sustained damage are encouraged to report it through the Texas Division of Emergency Management's (TDEM) Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT). The county says this tool allows people to report damage to private homes and businesses, helping emergency officials assess the extent of the impact. Cove water main break leads to Disaster Declaration
COPPERAS COVE, Texas (FOX 44) – A Declaration of Local Disaster and an Order for Stage 4B Implementation has been issued after a water main break in Copperas Cove. The city says a public notice was released on May 1, announcing a pending temporary upgrade to Stage 4 Water Conservation in support of WCID 1's construction projects. The planned construction dates were confirmed for May 26-30, and the city has been preparing and publishing public notices for customer notifications. However, the city says its water system has suffered a water main break on one of its main transmission lines prior to the scheduled WCID 1 event. This is compromising the water system's ability to meet customer demand while the line is being repaired. Copperas Cove Mayor Dan D. Yancey issued a Declaration of Local Disaster on Monday morning, in addition to an Order for Stage 4B Implementation. The order is anticipated to be in place through the WCID 1 project completion on May 30. All Copperas Cove citizens are encouraged to review and be familiar with the Stage 4B Restrictions as they are outlined in the document below, or on the city website here. Any person who knowingly or intentionally allows the use of water in violation of the order may be issued a citation for a Class C Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of $100 to $2,000. Officials Urge Water Safety Ahead of Summer Season
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — May is recognized as National Water Safety Month and as summer approaches and temperatures rise, many Central Texans will be looking for ways to cool off — and taking a swim is often the go-to solution. However, experts warn that it's crucial to stay safe and be prepared before heading into the water. Chris Bradford is the associate executive director of the YMCA in Waco. He says drownings happen more often than people may realize. 'The leading cause of accidental death in children between the ages of one and four is drowning,' Bradford said. 'Children are more likely to drown than they are to be in a motor vehicle accident. So if your child cannot learn to swim, the best thing that you can do is put them in swim lessons or make sure that they are in that U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.' This same advice applies to area lakes, including Lake Waco. 'Life jackets only work if you use them, so we highly recommend that you're wearing them when you're out on the water,' said Arianna Jacinto, Lake Waco's lead park ranger. 'We have designated swim beaches here around our lake. We have Twin Bridges and we have Airport Park, and both of them are delineated with swim buoys to help keep boats out, and we also have life jacket loaner stations.' Jacinto said the life jacket loaner stations are free to use, and are available for anyone on the water. Visitors are encouraged to return the jackets after use so others can stay safe, too. Whether you're swimming at home this summer, at a public pool or out on the lake, the message remains the same — stay aware, be prepared, and always prioritize safety, no matter your age. 'You are more likely that your child does not learn to swim if you yourself cannot swim. Fear is transferable to our children. So if you have a fear of the water, your children will have a fear of the water,' Bradford said.
