Huntington Park, California, city hall and mayor's home raided in $14M public funds probe

Fox News28-02-2025

A city hall building, the mayor's house and some residences of current and former council members in Huntington, California, were raided on Wednesday in a major corruption probe of a $14 million project, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman.
The investigation, named "Operation Dirty Pond," has been focusing on the "potential misuse of millions of dollars in public funds allocated for the construction of an aquatic center" since November 2022, the DA's Office said.
The Huntington Park Regional Aquatic Center, which was deemed "critical" on the city website, was expected to become a two-story building with an Olympic-size pool, gym, football field, conference rooms and more. However, residents never saw any results, according to the city's vice mayor.
"This is a project that has yielded nothing for the residents," Vice Mayor Arturo Flores said to FOX 11 Los Angeles. "It's my understanding that there's an estimated $14 million, give or take, that has been expended by the city, and that from those funds, the residents of the city have only received an empty lot with dead grass and nothing to show for those millions of dollars."
Fox News Digital also reached out to Flores and Huntington Park Mayor Karina Macias for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Former Huntington Park city council member Linda Caraballo reportedly said she sent a 282-page dossier to the DA's Office many years ago to alert them to alleged corruption. Caraballo said to the local station that "big time city officials from the city manager all the way down to the shot caller" should be prepared.
"Heads are going to roll and a lot of people are going to be really put into some serious problems," Caraballo said to FOX 11. "They all should find lawyers right away."
Valentin Amezquita, another former Huntington Park council member, said to FOX 11 that this may not be the city's only corrupt project and suggests conducting a "forensic audit of the city of current and past contracts."
"This is just the tip of the iceberg," Amezquita said to the local station. "There's many, many more."
Numerous items were seized during the searches, including public records, financial paperwork and electronic devices, according to the DA's Office.
"My office is committed to ensuring that public officials uphold the highest standards of honesty, integrity and transparency," Hochman said. "When concerns arise about the use of public funds or the actions of those in office, it is our duty to investigate thoroughly and protect the public's trust."
"I want to commend our dedicated prosecutors and investigators for their diligent work on this complex case. Their unwavering commitment to justice ensures that no one – regardless of their position or title – is above the law."

Ryan Lochte Could Be Forced Out Of His Florida Home Amid His Divorce From Estranged Wife

The divorce proceedings for Ryan Lochte and his estranged wife, Kayla Reid, have taken a dark turn since the initial news of their separation became public. Now, in a new filing, Reid is demanding sole use of one of their Florida homes, which the Olympic swimmer has pushed back on. In the legal documents, Reid also requested alimony, child support, and primary custody of their three children: Caiden, Liv, and Georgia. According to a report from Us Weekly, Reid, who filed for divorce from the Olympic Gold Medalist in March 2025, recently asked the court to grant her exclusive use of their home in Terrace, Florida. The report explains that Reid needs "the exclusive use of this home and the contents thereof, both now and in the future, for herself and the minor children." As of now, Lochte is reportedly residing at another home worth nearly $450,000, and has been doing so since March of this year. Reid's requests in the filing didn't stop there, though. Us Weekly also reports that the former Playboy Playmate claims Lochte took specific joint assets and income during their marriage and purchased other assets, some of which he put in his name. '[Those] assets are presently being held by [Ryan] in trust for and for all the benefit of [Kayla], and the court should award to [Kayla] her full interest in said assets,' her filing read. Additionally, Reid asked the court for a portion of the money from Lochte's businesses, including Lochte Enterprises LLC and Legendaryswimming LLC, claiming she had contributed significant time and effort to help improve these companies. '[Kayla] makes a claim for equitable distribution of the corporate defendant because she has been of great assistance of [Ryan], only in the marital business but also in terms of providing a home environment which supported [Ryan's] needs in every respect," the filing read. Per Us Weekly, Reid stated that the "marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken" in her divorce filing. The Florida-based real estate agent also stated that she was the primary caretaker of their three children before requesting the court grant her "sole parental responsibility." The 33-year-old also said that she's unable to support their children without Lochte's help and requested that the court award her child support and alimony, adding that she needs 'rehabilitative alimony to assist her financially while acquiring sufficient education, retraining, developing skill and/or improving her employment and income.' Reid's petition also requests that Lochte pay her attorney's fees. In his response, Lochte acknowledged that they own a Florida home together; however, he did not support her request to be granted exclusive use of the estate. He also denied the mother of three's claims about her participation in one of his businesses. The Olympian filed a counter-petition to Reid's divorce filing, too, stating in his documents that their official date of separation was April 2025. Lochte, 40, also requested that the court establish a parenting plan, determine child support, and divide their shared assets. According to a previous report from The Blast, Reid opened up about filing for divorce from Lochte in an Instagram post, where she described the decision to end her marriage as one of the most challenging she's ever had to make. "Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection," Reid wrote online. "I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. I've been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing — not from fresh, open wounds." She continued, "Sometimes we face trials we didn't choose or see coming. And in those moments, we're forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future. I've come to the understanding that staying isn't always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love — for those around me and for myself." Lochte also addressed the news in a separate post, where he said divorcing was the "right step toward peace and well-being for us both." "I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately," he finished.

Olympic Icon Mary Lou Retton Finally Addresses Recent DUI Arrest

Olympic gold medalist is speaking out for the first time following her May 17 arrest on a DUI charge in Marion County, West Virginia. The 57-year-old retired gymnast was charged with a misdemeanor for driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs. Retton was found behind the wheel of her Porsche in an AutoZone parking lot after witnesses reported erratic driving behavior. Officers at the scene noted a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and discovered an open screw-top bottle of wine in the vehicle. Mary Lou Retton failed all three phases of a standard field sobriety test and was later released after posting a $1,500 bond. In the weeks following the incident, Retton remained silent and reportedly out of contact with family members in her hometown of Fairmont. Some relatives told "Good Morning America" and Daily Mail they were unaware she was even in town until the arrest surfaced in the news. Now, Retton is addressing the situation publicly. In a statement shared with PEOPLE through her attorney Edmund J. Rollo, she said, 'I take full responsibility for my actions. What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry.' She added, 'I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.' On Tuesday, June 10, Retton appeared in court and formally entered a no contest plea to a non-aggravated DUI charge. She was fined $100, the standard penalty for first-time, non-aggravated DUI offenses in that jurisdiction. Her attorney emphasized that Retton 'asks for privacy as she moves forward with her personal and professional life.' Retton's statement comes amid growing concerns about her whereabouts in the days following her arrest. As The Blast previously reported, neighbors say her primary residence, a $550,000 home in Boerne, Texas, appears abandoned, with flyers and packages piling up at the doorstep and no sign of activity. According to those close to her, even loved ones have been unsure of her location in recent weeks. Although it's still unclear where Retton is currently staying, her appearance in court on June 10 provided some reassurance to her family, confirming that she is safe. Just months before her DUI arrest made headlines, Olympic legend Retton was in a very different kind of fight, one for her life. In October 2023, Retton was hospitalized in the ICU with a rare and severe form of pneumonia, her daughter McKenna revealed at the time. 'My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,' McKenna wrote in a now-deleted statement, per PEOPLE. 'She is not able to breathe on her own. She's been in the ICU for over a week now,' she added, also noting that her mother was uninsured and linking a Spotfund campaign to help cover medical costs. The public quickly rallied around the beloved gold medalist, raising funds and offering words of support during the frightening ordeal. In a July 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Retton opened up about her ongoing recovery, sharing that the illness left her with lasting lung damage and a daily dependence on supplemental oxygen. 'God wasn't ready for me yet,' she said. 'But my life will never be the same.' 'It's been really hard,' Retton admitted. 'My lungs are so scarred. It will be a lifetime of recovery. My physicality was the only thing I had, and it was taken away from me. It's embarrassing.' The former gymnast shares four daughters, Shayla, 30, McKenna, 28, Skyla, 24, and Emma, 23, with her ex-husband Shannon Kelley, a former college football quarterback turned real estate developer. The two divorced in 2018 after nearly three decades of marriage.
