Mum's gender reveal ruined by Card Factor in the 'worst way'
A mum claims her baby's gender reveal was 'ruined' when she found out in the 'worst way ever'.
Jess Gildenhuys was in Card Factory's Hardwick Road store in King's Lynn with her husband Josh Gildenhuys, 33, buying her mum a birthday card when the couple spotted gender reveal confetti cannons and balloons for sale.
The 33-year-old had just had her 20-week ultrasound that morning, and the doctor put the gender of her baby in an envelope as she was planning on having a gender reveal party with her family.
The soon-to-be mum-of-three wanted to buy the items, but first checked with a staff member that the store could ensure the colour of the products could be kept a secret from her and her husband.
Jess, owner of her own business, Hello Moon Crystals, claims the staff member told her they could keep the gender a secret from her by removing the labels from the cannons.
However, the business owner said that when the couple went to buy the items, the colour of the confetti cannon came up on a screen in front of the till as 'coastal blue.'
Jess was 'shocked' and even more frustrated to see the colour of the cannon was visible on the receipt too.
She had been looking forward to finding out the gender of her new baby with her two daughters, Jupiter and Athena Gildenhuys, aged six and three.
Jess, from King's Lynn, Norfolk, said: "It's the worst way ever to find out the gender of your baby, you couldn't even write it.
"You absolutely do not expect your gender reveal to be inside a Card Factory.
"I was so shocked. It's hard to be shocked in that situation and keep your cool when you're in a public place. I didn't want to make a big deal of anything.
"I've already got two girls. I was convinced this was a girl because I thought I was destined for girls. I'd already bought girl's clothes as well.
"It was disappointing because we didn't find out as a family but it's also a funny story to tell I guess.
"I mean what can you do in that situation apart from just laugh about it?"
She said she sent Card Factory an email a few days later and said they asked which store this had happened in and that they were sorry for her disappointment.
Footage shows the couple using the confetti cannon and balloon at a family party with her family, where their daughters found out they would be getting a new baby brother.
But sadly, Jess and Josh already knew the gender of their baby, as for them, the surprise had been ruined.
Jess said: "Because this is our last baby for sure, we wanted to make things a bit more fun and do something as a family.
"It was disappointing the way we found out. It was ruined in that way. At least it made it fun for everyone else. I am a very positive person in those kinds of situations.
"At least it wasn't just me, at least I was with my husband.
"I didn't want to say anything to the person at the time either because I didn't want to come across rude or disrespectful or anything.
"I just can't believe I'm going to be a boy mum. I'm like, 'oh my god!'
"It's exciting though, it'll be fun, I'm sure."
She shared a video of her experience on TikTok with the words: "@CardFactoryUK ruining our gender surprise."
The situation left viewers divided in the comments.
One said: "You can't blame them, they've simply scanned the barcode, not realising it would come up as blue or pink."
Another wrote: "Oh dear haha. Maybe next time, get a friend or family member to get the items."

A third commented: "Imagine finding out in Card Factory."
A fourth said: "You poor thing. I can't imagine going through such a thing in my whole life. Sending so much sympathy to you and your family."
A Card Factory spokesman said: "We've been in touch with Jessica to offer our sincere apologies.
"We've also issued reminders to our teams to advise customers that these items can show up on our till screens and receipts.
"We would like to try help make amends to Jessica and her family and encourage her to make contact with our customer service team."

Dani Dyer is married! TV personality stuns in an off-the-shoulder gown as she ties-the-knot with Jarrod Bowen during intimate ceremony
Dani Dyer and Jarrod Bowen married during an intimate ceremony surrounded by their closest friends and family on Saturday. The TV personality, 28, stunned in an elegant off-the-shoulder gown to tie-the-knot with the West Ham captain, also 28. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Days before the ceremony, Dani opened up about the touching role her dad Danny would play in her wedding to Jarrod. Her father, beloved EastEnders star Danny Dyer, 47, will walk her down the aisle - a moment Dani says will be 'filled with emotion'. Speaking on their joint podcast, Live and Let Dyers, Dani revealed she was keeping her wedding dress a surprise from her dad until the big day to honour a special tradition. 'Have you not seen that first look when the dad sees their daughter in their dress and that? Oh, it's lovely,' she shared. 'Yeah, your dad's not meant to see it – it's a moment for the dad as well!' Dani has had a whirlwind few months, filled with two lavish hen parties and all the excitement of getting ready for her big day. Speaking to Heat magazine earlier this week, Dani said: 'I have finally done my table plans now. Until you are in there writing names out, making sure you have tables of 10, it's the most stressful experience ever - that's the only thing I've not enjoyed.' Dani also revealed she will take on a double-barrell surname after the wedding, becoming Dyer-Bowen. She said: 'I am going to keep the Dyer - I am going to do Dani Dyer-Bowen just because of my work. I feel like if I am Dani Bowen, it takes that thing away from me. We are double-barrelling it.' The wedding will undoubtedly be an emotional day for Dani's father Danny Dyer, with the reality star saying he and West Ham star Jarrod are very close. 'We've joked so many times that Jarrod is marrying the wrong Dani Dyer!' she said. The mother-of-three added she has really enjoyed the build up to the big day, which included a recent hen night in Ibiza with her pals. Sparing no expense with her lavish nuptials, the bride-to-be shared a glimpse of her wild celebrations on Instagram, which included a boozy brunch, a boat trip and a raucous night in the lavish nightclub Ushuaia. A source told The Sun that Dani really splashed the cash during her hen celebrations, including a VIP night at Ushuaia that cost at least £8,000. The insider said: 'Dani might have flown on a commercial flight but they splashed the cash when they landed. 'She spent Friday night at Ushuaia where they were on a VIP table with a minimum spend of £8,000. The next day they hired a boat to go around the coast before spending the rest of the time chilling at the Hard Rock hotel. 'Dani also had a boozy brunch at Beso Beach where her mates put on Jarrod masks and sang ABBA songs with her. 'They spent their last night at super club Hï Ibiza where they had a VIP booth. There were some sore heads when they touched down at City airport.' Meanwhile, Jarrod jetted off to Las Vegas for his stag do as he prepared to marry the Love Island star.

Millions of bees escape after lorry overturns
There was a buzz in the air in Washington state as about 250 million honeybees escaped after a lorry overturned. The vehicle hauling an estimated 70,000lb of honeybee hives rolled over close to the Canadian border near Lynden, Whatcom County Sheriff's Office said in social media posts. The driver appears to have lost control on a tight turn, causing the trailer to roll into a ditch, county emergency management spokeswoman Amy Cloud said. The driver was uninjured. Emergency services and several bee experts responded to the scene, and local beekeepers helped to recover, restore and reset the hives, according to the sheriff's office. The plan is to allow the bees to return to their hives and find their queen bee in the next day or two, according to the sheriff's office. The goal is to save as many of the bees as possible. 'Thank you to the wonderful community of beekeepers: over two dozen showed up to help ensure the rescue of millions of pollinating honey bees would be as successful as possible,' the sheriff's office said. The public were advised to avoid the area on Friday, and sheriff's deputies dived into their patrol cars at times to avoid being stung. Honeybees are crucial to the food supply, pollinating more than 100 crops including nuts, vegetables, berries, citrus and melons. Bees and other pollinators have been declining for years, and experts blame insecticides, parasites, disease, climate change and lack of a diverse food supply. In 2018, the UN General Assembly sponsored the first World Bee Day on May 20 to bring attention to the bees' plight. Beekeepers often transport millions of bees from one location to another because leaving them in one location for too long can deplete resources for other pollinators, the Seattle Times reported. Alan Woods, president of Washington State Beekeepers Association, told the newspaper the state should have a standardised 'emergency bee response' for bee vehicle crashes. In 2015, 14 million bees escaped from a truck north of Seattle on Interstate 5 and started stinging people, the newspaper reported at the time.

Sabalenka, Alcaraz face US challengers in French Open round four
May 31 (Reuters) - The French Open fourth round starts on Sunday with women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka and men's defending champion Carlos Alcaraz both facing American opponents, while Iga Swiatek continues her quest for a fourth straight women's singles title. TOP WOMEN'S MATCH: ARYNA SABALENKA V AMANDA ANISIMOVA Three-times Grand Slam champion Sabalenka has built up to her latest push for a maiden French Open title with a solid run of form in the clay season, winning the Madrid Open and reaching the finals of Stuttgart and Italian Opens. The 27-year-old is yet to drop a set and did not make a single double fault during Friday's win over Olga Danilovic. Her toughest test yet comes in the form of American 16th seed Anisimova, who has won five of their seven previous meetings. Former semi-finalist Anisimova is looking to become a top contender again after taking a break from tennis in 2023 over burnout and mental health concerns. "We're both pretty big hitters, so I'm sure we're going to be going at it back and forth a bit," the 23-year-old said. "She is number one.... I really enjoy the fight and the challenge that she brings on." TOP MEN'S MATCH: BEN SHELTON V CARLOS ALCARAZ American 12th seed Ben Shelton said he never played a match on red clay before 2023. The next year, he won his first title on the ATP tour on the surface, and now he has reached the French Open fourth round for the first time, against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. "This is a challenge. Not my natural surface that I grew up playing on, but a surface I want to become great on," the 23-year-old Shelton said. No American has reached the French Open men's singles final since Andre Agassi in 1999. "This is a tournament that Americans have not had huge success in... I think this is a really cool opportunity for Americans. You do something big in an event like this, it really means something," he said. Shelton, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals this year, may prove to be a tough test for Alcaraz, who has dropped a set each in his last two matches. Four-times French Open champion Iga Swiatek could not keep a straight face when asked if she would prefer her fourth-round opponent to be Jelena Ostapenko, who beat the Polish fifth seed in all six of their previous matches, or Elena Rybakina. "Am I a good liar? Let's say it doesn't matter, really," Swiatek told reporters, smiling. "Oh, my God. I couldn't play poker." While Swiatek has avoided another clash with Ostapenko, her quest for a sixth Grand Slam title could face its biggest challenge yet against Kazakhstani 12th seed Rybakina. Rybakina beat Swiatek both times they met on clay, in 2023 and 2024, in the middle of Swiatek's dominant reign on the surface where she won successive French Open titles. Overall, they are tied on head-to-head after eight meetings. "Of course, she is very comfortable on these courts. But I think every day, every match is different," Rybakina said. FRENCH OPEN ORDER OF PLAY ON SUNDAY (prefix number denotes seeding): COURT PHILIPPE-CHATRIER (Play begins at 0900 GMT) 4-Jasmine Paolini (Italy) v 13-Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) 12-Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) v 5-Iga Swiatek (Poland) 13-Ben Shelton (U.S.) v 2-Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) 8-Lorenzo Musetti (Italy) v 10-Holger Rune (Denmark) COURT SUZANNE-LENGLEN (Play begins at 0900 GMT) 25-Alexei Popyrin (Australia) v 12-Tommy Paul (U.S.) 19-Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) v 8-Zheng Qinwen (China) 1-Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) v 16-Amanda Anisimova (U.S.) 15-Frances Tiafoe (U.S.) v Daniel Altmaier (Germany)
