Downton Football Club's social media warning after fan death
A football club has launched a campaign urging people not to post negative comments on social media after the death of a fan. Wiltshire-based Downton Football Club has teamed up with charity YoungMinds to launch the campaign after Alice Clark, the daughter of one of the club's volunteers, took her own life.The club's 'Pause for Thought' campaign urges people to think twice before posting online."Negative words written about a person on social media can have a significant negative impact on their mental health," a club spokesperson said.
They added negative posts can cause "anxiety, stress, depression, and lowered self-esteem" if they are widely shared."Think how it would make the writer feel if reading the words about themselves."Think about how the words used might reflect them as an individual," they added.
Players will also take part a minute's silence before some league matches this year.Club volunteer Paula Henley, who also lost a family member to suicide, said Downton FC held a special match on Boxing Day as a fundraiser for YoungMinds in memory of Alice, who was 15."It was really important, her family were all here. It was very well supported," she said."Her dad was actually captaining one of the teams and I think they really appreciated it as a family – It was very raw at the time."It made sense with what's happened here to engage with them [YoungMinds] as our charity partner."
The club's vice-chairman Rae Hughes said it takes its role with the community "really seriously"."The least we can do is use our position in the community and our big social media following and spread the word," he said.Over two consecutive weekends in the spring, every Velocity Wessex League team will be encouraged to pause for a minute's silence, with the final game of the season also being dedicated to the campaign.Downton FC is raising money for YoungMinds, which specialises in supporting young people with their mental health, via its social media pages.

Real Madrid and Tottenham legend Gareth Bale is in talks to become the new co-owner of League One club Plymouth Argyle. The former Wales captain has remained largely out of the football scene after hanging up his boots in 2023, aside from the occasional appearance as a pundit. But Bale, 35, is now fronting a US-based private equity group who are plotting a full takeover of the Devon team who have been looking for new investment for some time. According to The Telegraph, the group includes members of the American-based Storch family but Bale's involvement in the bid has come as a complete surprise. Plymouth were relegated from the Championship last season, unable to recover after a dreadful start under the management of Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney. The Pilgrims did improve after Rooney was sacked on New Year's Eve, notably knocking eventual Premier League champions Liverpool out of the FA Cup. They'll begin the 2025/26 season with another former United and England star in the dugout, after appointing Tom Cleverly as head coach on a three-year contract last week. Bale is the latest big name sports star to become involved in owning an EFL club after his former Real teammate Luka Modric bought a minority share in Swansea City in April. The move had fuelled hope from fans that the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would be signing for the Welsh club upon leaving Madrid, but the 39-year-old is instead set to move to AC Milan this summer. The Welsh NFL prospect has re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of the 2025/26 season, following his first full campaign in the sport. The Jaguars are set to return to London for a regular-season fixture, alongside the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. In the build-up to the event, Rees-Zammit has travelled back to the UK to help promote his team's Family Fun Day at Ealing Trailfinders rugby club this Saturday. Rees-Zammit was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs last season before being snapped up by the Florida-based outfit. He did, however, remain on the training squad and did not make the 53-man playing roster. It looks set to be a gruelling few months ahead for the 24-year-old as he bids to make the active squad for next season. "It's been a whirlwind year and a half, two years now. "I'm still trying to make it in Jacksonville and treating every day the same, working as hard as I can and try to be a great team-mate and learn from them. It's been very intense, learning a new playbook - it's my third playbook in the last year. Article continues below "I am really looking forward to the future. We have a month off now before training camp starts and the pre-season games, where I am going to try and put my best foot forward and make the 53." Since the former rugby wing's departure from the sport for a new jaunt in America, Wales' fortunes on the field have been dire. Wales have lost a record-breaking 17 Test matches in a row and Rees-Zammit admits it's been painful watching from afar. Nevertheless, a proud Welshman, he admits he misses pulling on the red jersey. "I obviously miss playing for my country. I have got to get a balance, a little bit," he said of playing rugby for Wales. "I'm obviously loving life over in America, but my country is always going to be my country, so when I was able to play for Wales it was a dream come true." And what about a possible return to rugby in the future? "You never know in life, do you? Anything can happen," he said. "I'm still young, which is a good thing, I'm only 24, so I have got time on my side. So we will see what happens." For now, at least, with Rees-Zammit laser-focussed on getting into the Jaguars' active playing roster, Wales are going to have to end the winning drought without him, with a two-Test tour of Japan next up. "I think this is going to be a great, fresh start for them, playing in Japan under Matt Sherratt," he added. "I think it will be a great tour for them and fingers crossed I'm hoping they'll win."
