Downton Football Club's social media warning after fan death

BBC News06-02-2025

A football club has launched a campaign urging people not to post negative comments on social media after the death of a fan. Wiltshire-based Downton Football Club has teamed up with charity YoungMinds to launch the campaign after Alice Clark, the daughter of one of the club's volunteers, took her own life. The club's 'Pause for Thought' campaign urges people to think twice before posting online."Negative words written about a person on social media can have a significant negative impact on their mental health," a club spokesperson said.
They added negative posts can cause "anxiety, stress, depression, and lowered self-esteem" if they are widely shared."Think how it would make the writer feel if reading the words about themselves."Think about how the words used might reflect them as an individual," they added.
Players will also take part a minute's silence before some league matches this year.Club volunteer Paula Henley, who also lost a family member to suicide, said Downton FC held a special match on Boxing Day as a fundraiser for YoungMinds in memory of Alice, who was 15."It was really important, her family were all here. It was very well supported," she said."Her dad was actually captaining one of the teams and I think they really appreciated it as a family – It was very raw at the time."It made sense with what's happened here to engage with them [YoungMinds] as our charity partner."
The club's vice-chairman Rae Hughes said it takes its role with the community "really seriously"."The least we can do is use our position in the community and our big social media following and spread the word," he said.Over two consecutive weekends in the spring, every Velocity Wessex League team will be encouraged to pause for a minute's silence, with the final game of the season also being dedicated to the campaign.Downton FC is raising money for YoungMinds, which specialises in supporting young people with their mental health, via its social media pages.

Tonight's rugby news as rugby league star joins Wales coaching team and powerhouse tipped for breakthrough

Tonight's rugby news as rugby league star joins Wales coaching team and powerhouse tipped for breakthrough The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Ben Flower has joined the Wales Women's coaching team (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) These are your evening rugby headlines on Monday, June 16. Rugby league star joins Wales coaching staff Former Welsh rugby league star Ben Flower has been appointed to the Wales Women's coaching team for their summer training camp. The 37-year-old - who was also part of the coaching staff for the last Women's Rugby Word Cup in New Zealand - joins Sean Lynn's team as collision coach and will play a key role as the squad prepare for a two-Test match tour to Australia and their 2025 World Cup campaign in England later this summer. ‌ Cardiff-born Flower represented the Welsh-based Crusaders as well as Super League sides Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions during a glittering career that saw him win the Challenge Cup, three Super League titles and the World Club challenge with Wigan. ‌ On the international stage, he won 17 caps for the Wales rugby league side. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Having moved into coaching, Flower has taken charge of the South Wales Jets rugby league side as well as working with Wales Women four years ago. Upon returning to the coaching staff for a busy summer of rugby, he said: "Being involved with Wales is always a privilege and being asked and to have the chance of being involved with my country is an honour you don't turn down. Article continues below 'Having played at a World Cup as a player and to have this chance to play a role as Wales prepare for a World Cup is an opportunity I am looking forward to.' Wales are looking to turn around a poor run of form that saw them lose every match at the recent Women's Six Nations, with head coach Lynn hoping that added focus on their collision work will make a big difference during their upcoming World Cup campaign. Welcoming Flower to his staff, Lynn said: "'Ben is someone who has worked with this squad of players before and the W6N review highlighted the need to improve our collision work and dominance, both sides of the ball, as a real area we can improve on.' ‌ Ospreys powerhouse tipped for Wales call-up Departing Ospreys star Adam Beard has tipped teammate James Fender to become a Wales international despite missing out on a place on the summer tour to Japan. The 23-year-old lock has been a consistent performer for the Ospreys, with his no-nonsense style, athleticism and huge physicality seeing him dominate stronger packs, all while getting through a massive amount of work in defence. He had been on Warren Gatland's radar last season, but injuries prevented him from being called into the Wales squad. ‌ With Beard and Will Rowlands also not selected for the Japan tour by interim coach Matt Sherratt, Fender could count himself as extremely unlucky not to be picked, with many onlookers viewing it as the perfect time for him to be blooded as an international. Fender has been tipped to win international honours But while he looks set to have to wait to win his first cap, Beard has no doubt that Fender has the ability to thrive as an international second row, with another teammate, Rhys Davies, also tipped to add to his three Wales caps if he can steer clear of further injuries. ‌ 'There are some good second rows in Wales,' Beard told RugbyPass. 'I know from playing at the Ospreys that they have boys pushing through. "James Ratti is in the squad but they also have Rhys Davies and James Fender. Rhys has had some bad luck with injuries. If he has a run of games, it won't be long before he's wearing the Welsh jersey again. 'James is only 23, but he has all the attributes to be an international second row," he added. ‌ "He's had good exposure over the past couple of years, has taken charge of the set-piece and is learning with every game.' Borthwick names England squad By PA Sport Staff England head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 36-man training squad for next weekend's match against a France XV. ‌ The squad includes nine Bath and Leicester players – Charlie Ewels, Joe Heyes, Ted Hill, Guy Pepper, Will Muir, Max Ojomoh, Ben Spencer, Freddie Steward and Jack van Poortvliet – that featured in Saturday's Gallagher Premiership final, plus Bath's Sam Underhill, who missed the game due to suspension. However, there is no place for 21-year-old Saracens scrum-half Charlie Bracken, the son of former England international Kyran, one of 16 uncapped players named in the original training group when it was confirmed by England Rugby on Monday. Sale flanker Ben Curry is included among a list of players in rehabilitation along with Northampton duo Fraser Dingwall and George Furbank and Bristol's Harry Randall. ‌ Players who have been called up to Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions party for their tour to Australia were not considered for selection, and neither were Joe Batley, Ollie Lawrence, Alex Lozowski, George Martin or Ollie Sleightholme. An England XV will face a France XV at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Saturday ahead of Test matches against the United States and Argentina. Gareth Bale in talks to become surprise co-owner of League One club

Real Madrid and Tottenham legend Gareth Bale is in talks to become the new co-owner of League One club Plymouth Argyle. The former Wales captain has remained largely out of the football scene after hanging up his boots in 2023, aside from the occasional appearance as a pundit. But Bale, 35, is now fronting a US-based private equity group who are plotting a full takeover of the Devon team who have been looking for new investment for some time. According to The Telegraph, the group includes members of the American-based Storch family but Bale's involvement in the bid has come as a complete surprise. Plymouth were relegated from the Championship last season, unable to recover after a dreadful start under the management of Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney. The Pilgrims did improve after Rooney was sacked on New Year's Eve, notably knocking eventual Premier League champions Liverpool out of the FA Cup. They'll begin the 2025/26 season with another former United and England star in the dugout, after appointing Tom Cleverly as head coach on a three-year contract last week. Bale is the latest big name sports star to become involved in owning an EFL club after his former Real teammate Luka Modric bought a minority share in Swansea City in April. The move had fuelled hope from fans that the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would be signing for the Welsh club upon leaving Madrid, but the 39-year-old is instead set to move to AC Milan this summer. Additionally, NFL legend Tom Brady is a co-owner at Birmingham City, while golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas bought shares in Leeds United prior to their promotion to the Premier League. Clubs: Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Los Angeles FC Appearances: 554 Goals: 185 Assists: 132 Major Trophies: League Cup, La Liga x3, Copa del Rey, Champions League x5, Club World Cup x3, MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield One of the greatest forwards of his generation, Bale began his career at Southampton before joining Tottenham, where he established himself as arguably the Premier League's best player. More Trending In 2013, the winger moved to Real Madrid for a then-world record £85million and over the next nine years won five Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles and three Club World Cups. He also become Wales' top goalscorer and appearance maker with 41 goals in 111 caps, playing a key role in the Dragons' remarkable run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. Injuries did affect his career at Los Blancos and after returning to Spurs for a season on loan, he finished his club career at Los Angeles FC and retired shortly after captaining his country at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Louis Rees-Zammit makes Wales rugby admission in live TV interview as he returns to UK

Louis Rees-Zammit makes Wales rugby admission in live TV interview as he returns to UK The Jacksonville Jaguars player gave an interview to Sky Sports about his NFL career and whether he would return to rugby Louis Rees-Zammit enters the Sky studios in west London (Image: Instagram/Louis Rees-Zammit ) Louis Rees-Zammit admits he misses playing rugby for Wales and has left the door ajar for a possible return to the sport in the future. The Welsh NFL prospect has re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of the 2025/26 season, following his first full campaign in the sport. The Jaguars are set to return to London for a regular-season fixture, alongside the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. In the build-up to the event, Rees-Zammit has travelled back to the UK to help promote his team's Family Fun Day at Ealing Trailfinders rugby club this Saturday. ‌ Rees-Zammit was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs last season before being snapped up by the Florida-based outfit. He did, however, remain on the training squad and did not make the 53-man playing roster. It looks set to be a gruelling few months ahead for the 24-year-old as he bids to make the active squad for next season. ‌ "It's been a whirlwind year and a half, two years now. I haven't had time to really look back on it," he told Sky Sports. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. "I'm still trying to make it in Jacksonville and treating every day the same, working as hard as I can and try to be a great team-mate and learn from them. They've been playing the sport for years and years and I'm just coming into it. "We have just had a 10-week camp we finished last weekend. It's been very intense, learning a new playbook - it's my third playbook in the last year. Article continues below "I am really looking forward to the future. We have a month off now before training camp starts and the pre-season games, where I am going to try and put my best foot forward and make the 53." Since the former rugby wing's departure from the sport for a new jaunt in America, Wales' fortunes on the field have been dire. Wales have lost a record-breaking 17 Test matches in a row and Rees-Zammit admits it's been painful watching from afar. Nevertheless, a proud Welshman, he admits he misses pulling on the red jersey. ‌ "I obviously miss playing for my country. I have got to get a balance, a little bit," he said of playing rugby for Wales. "I'm obviously loving life over in America, but my country is always going to be my country, so when I was able to play for Wales it was a dream come true." And what about a possible return to rugby in the future? "You never know in life, do you? Anything can happen," he said. ‌ "I'm still young, which is a good thing, I'm only 24, so I have got time on my side. So we will see what happens." For now, at least, with Rees-Zammit laser-focussed on getting into the Jaguars' active playing roster, Wales are going to have to end the winning drought without him, with a two-Test tour of Japan next up. "I think this is going to be a great, fresh start for them, playing in Japan under Matt Sherratt," he added. Article continues below "There are two players who have gone to the Lions from Wales, so they have got a good bulk of players who will come through to play in the next few years. "I think it will be a great tour for them and fingers crossed I'm hoping they'll win."
