Seeking first LPGA Tour victories, Schmelzel and Valenzuela team to take Dow Championship lead

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) — Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela took the third-round lead Saturday in the Dow Championship, shooting a 2-under 68 in alternate-shot play to move into position for their first LPGA Tour victories.
Schmelzel and Valenzuela had a 13-under 197 total at Midland Country Cup heading into the better-ball final round. They opened with an alternate-shot 68 on Thursday and had a best-ball 61 on Friday.
'You're kind of on pins and needles most of the day, just hoping you don't get your partner in trouble,' Schmelzel said. 'Just super solid. I feel like we had really good attitudes throughout the entire day. I think both of us took every single shot as it came.'
The teams of Jin Hee Im-Somi Lee (68) and Manon De Roey-Pauline Roussin-Bouchard (69) were a stroke back.
'I'm very proud of us,' De Roey said. 'We hung in there. We fought until the end.'
Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire, the second-round leaders after a 60, birdied the final two holes for a 72 that left them tied for fourth at 11 under with Lauren Hartlage-Brooke Matthews (66) and Sung Hyun Park-Ina Yoon (67) . Kupcho won in 2022 with Lizette Salas.
'Just try and go low and try and post a number early and see what happens.' Maguire said. 'I think it was nice to see two putts go in at the end.'
Lexi Thompson-Meghan Kang (68) and Rio Takeda-Miyu Yamashita (67) were 10 under.
Defending champions Ruoning Yin and Jeeno Thitikul, both among the top five in the women's world ranking, were 9 under after a 67.
Schmelzel and Valenzuela parred the final seven holes. They had four birdies and two bogeys in the round.
'I feel like we had a really good day,' Valenzuela said. 'Our goal in foursomes was just to get a couple under or maybe a little bit better. We had a few mistakes, and that's going to happen in this format. We also did a lot of really good stuff.'

Honduras beats Panama in shootout to reach Gold Cup semis
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Carlos Pineda scored the decisive penalty shot as Honduras beat Panama in a shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals on Saturday night. Honduras advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California, where it will face the winner of Saudi Arabia and Mexico. It's the first time Honduras has made the Gold Cup semis since 2013. Honduras struggled to generate many scoring opportunities until coming alive late in the second half. Los Catrachos evened the scored in the 82nd minute when Anthony Lozano deflected a shot from Carlos Pineda into the corner of the net following a corner kick. Both teams made four out of five shots in the initial round of kicks. Honduras had a chance to win with its fifth attempt, but Orlando Mosquera made a diving stop on Lozano's shot. Panama's Eduardo Guerrero sailed the next penalty kick over the net, giving Honduras another chance to win. This time, Pineda took advantage, burying his shot into the bottom left corner to give Honduras the 5-4 shootout win. Panama dominated possession in the first half, but couldn't break through until Cristian Martínez was fouled by Honduras' Edwin Rodríguez in the 44th minute just inside the penalty area. Ismael Díaz took the shot and calmly scored his Gold Cup-leading sixth goal, finding the bottom left corner of the net to give Panama a 1-0 lead. Panama scored 10 goals in the three games during the group stage, including eight in the first half. With his sixth goal, Díaz passed Gabriel Torres as the Panamanian player with the most goals in a single Gold Cup. Panama is a three-time Gold Cup runner-up, losing twice in the championship game to the U.S. (2005, 2013) and once to Mexico in 2023. Honduras was runner-up in the inaugural tournament in 1991, losing to the U.S. It was the first knockout round meeting between the two countries in the Gold Cup. Panama advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals after winning Group C, beating Guatemala, Jamaica and Guadeloupe. Jake Paul is about to take his biggest boxing test against notorious ex-champ Julio César Chávez Jr.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jake Paul is set to take the biggest risk of his unique boxing career on Saturday night when he faces former middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr. at Honda Center. Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) is facing his most accomplished opponent yet when he takes on the 39-year-old Chávez (54-6-2, 34 KOs) in front of a raucous Orange County crowd. Chávez has fought once since 2021 and is best known for failing to maximize the potential in his famous father's genetics. He is still the most credible boxer by far to share the ring with Paul, who is now 5 1/2 years and 13 fights into his lucrative boxing tenure. Paul has successfully leveraged his Internet ubiquity and his own hard work to become a force in the business of boxing, if not in championship bouts. He has founded a busy promotional company and flirted with mixed martial arts while becoming one of the most important combat sports athletes in the world on his unique career path. Paul has mostly fought mixed martial artists and fellow online celebrities, and he took his only loss in February 2023 when he stepped in against actual boxer Tommy Fury, whose fame also exceeds his ring skills. Paul hadn't fought since last November, when he beat Mike Tyson in a much-hyped bout that couldn't live up to improbable expectations from fans who didn't understand the simple realities of Tyson being 58 years old.
