Nico Harrison offers strong response to Knicks' Jason Kidd pursuit

New York Post5 hours ago

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is putting the kibosh on the Jason Kidd-Knicks rumblings once again.
'Are there rumors out there about J-Kidd?' Harrison told reporters Wednesday after the Mavericks took Cooper Flagg with the first pick of the 2025 NBA Draft.
'I thought I shut those down. Yes, he will be the head coach next year.'
Despite his current position as head coach of the Mavs, Kidd's name has been in Knicks coaching rumors ever since New York fired Tom Thibodeau in early June.
On June 9, The Post reported that there was mutual interest between Kidd and the Knicks for the opening.

The Knicks requested permission from Dallas to speak with the Hall of Fame point guard on June 11. The Mavericks declined.
The speculation has persisted, nonetheless. NBA insider Scoop B. Robinson reported Tuesday that Kidd views the Knicks' opening as a 'dream job.'
On June 5, two days after the Knicks dismissed Thibodeau, ESPN.com reported that there had been major franchise decisions in Dallas that Kidd was 'not on board with.' That included the firing of athletic trainer Casey Smith, who is now with the Knicks.
Kidd would bring a winning pedigree and a wealth of basketball savvy to New York.

He took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season and was a 10-time All-Star in his 19-year playing career.
The San Francisco native spent the last season of his playing career with the Knicks in 2012-13, teaming up with Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler.
In the past week, the focus of the Knicks' coaching search has reportedly shifted to former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, former Kings coach Mike Brown and Pelicans assistant James Borrego.

In the weeks prior, the Knicks had reportedly reached out to several teams to request interviews with their current coaches, including the Rockets' Ime Udoka, the Bulls' Billy Donovan, the Timberwolves' Chris Finch and the Hawks' Quin Snyder. All four requests were denied.
Kidd has two years remaining on his contract in Dallas.
In Dallas, Kidd now has a new young star to mentor in Flagg after Harrison shockingly traded away Luka Doncic to the Lakers last season.

Dwyane Wade Makes Stunning Admission on LeBron James Being ‘Greatest Heat Player Ever'

Dwyane Wade Makes Stunning Admission on LeBron James Being 'Greatest Heat Player Ever' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a remarkable display of humility and sportsmanship, NBA legend Dwyane Wade has publicly acknowledged LeBron James as the greatest player to ever don a Miami Heat jersey. Advertisement The admission, shared via a post on X by @HeatCulture13 on Wednesday, comes with a reflective quote from Wade himself: 'I have the greatest body of work of anybody that's ever put a Miami Heat jersey on. If you wanna be honest, LeBron James is the greatest player to ever put a Miami Heat jersey on,' Wade stated. This candid statement accompanies a striking image of Wade (No. 3) and James (No. 6) standing side by side in their Heat uniforms, a testament to their iconic partnership during the "Big Three" era from 2010 to 2014. Together, they led the Heat to two NBA Finals championships and four Eastern Conference titles, cementing their legacy. This admission not only underscores the mutual respect between the two superstars but also reignites debates about their respective impacts on the Heat franchise. As the basketball world reflects on this moment, Wade's gracious nod to James solidifies his status as a true gentleman of the game. Minnesota Timberwolves will make the first selection of the second round of the NBA draft

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA draft resumes Thursday night with the Minnesota Timberwolves making the first selection of the second round. The draft picks up where it left off at Barclays Center in Brooklyn — though in a much smaller portion of it than was used Wednesday for the first round. The second round begins with the No. 31 pick and this year runs through No. 59 instead of 60, with the New York Knicks having been penalized their selection for tampering by negotiating with Jalen Brunson too soon before eventually signing the guard away from Dallas in 2022. The NBA points to the success of players such as Brunson, who became an All-NBA selection in New York, and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic of Denver when touting the types of difference-makers who could come out of the second round. The Mavericks, who selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick on Wednesday, do not currently have a selection in Round 2. The NBA began a two-night format for the draft last year after doing it one night ended too late. ___ AP NBA:

Cleveland Cavaliers' Owner Retains Bank to Sell Stake in NBA Franchise

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is looking to sell a stake in his NBA franchise, according to a half-dozen sources who asked not to be named because the details are private. He has retained Allen & Company to explore selling up to 15% of the team, according to three of those sources. The transaction could be in one parcel or to several individuals. Gilbert would retain his majority stake in the team he bought in 2005 for $375 million, which was a record at the time for a standalone NBA franchise. In December, Sportico valued the Cavs at $3.95 billion in its NBA team valuations, which ranks 18th in the league. Advertisement More from The Cavaliers and Allen & Company declined requests to comment. NBA values have doubled over the past four years—and are up 1,100% over the past 15 years—to an average of $4.6 billion in December. To top that off, in the past three months, the Boston Celtics ($6.1 billion) and Los Angeles Lakers ($10 billion) reached agreements to sell their franchises at 8% and 24% premiums to Sportico's estimated values. The Cavaliers are coming off their second-best regular season in franchise history. Their 64-18 record included a franchise-best 15-0 start to the season, and the win tally sits only behind the 66 victories during the 2008-09 campaign. Last month, the Indiana Pacers knocked them out of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Advertisement The Cavaliers are led by guard Donovan Mitchell, who was voted First-Team All-NBA this year, and Evan Mobley, who made the second team. Mitchell is under contract for the next two seasons, with a player option for 2027-28, while Mobley starts a five-year, $269 million deal next season, making the Cavs a substantial luxury taxpayer. The team last had to pay the luxury tax during the 2017-18 season, LeBron James' last with the team before he joined the Lakers. During Gilbert's two decades as owner, the Cavaliers have made five NBA Finals—largely on the back of James—with the franchise's lone title coming in 2016. Last year, Allen represented immersive media platform Cosm when it raised more than $250 million from investors, including Gilbert. The bank was also retained to lead the WNBA's expansion process for its 16th team, with a Cleveland bid from Gilbert one of the leading contenders to nab the slot. Advertisement Gilbert's sports assets sit within Rock Entertainment Group and also include the Cleveland Monsters in the AHL and Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League. REG also operates Rocket Arena, Cleveland Clinic Courts and Rock Entertainment Sports Network, a joint venture with Gray Media. In November, the company announced its plans to bid on the WNBA expansion franchise. Gilbert made his first fortune in the mortgage business with Quicken Loans, which is now Rocket Mortgage. He has a net worth of $32.1 billion, according to Bloomberg. Best of Sign up for Sportico's Newsletter. For the latest news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
