Railways' nod sought for girder work of Coimbatore's Avinashi Road flyover at night
COIMBATORE: The ambitious Avinashi Road elevated flyover project in Coimbatore has hit a major roadblock near Hopes Junction, as the Southern Railways has granted limited working hours for the construction activity in the area.
With the 10.1-kilometre-long flyover nearing completion, the last major hurdle involves installing eight massive iron girder beams over the railway lines at Hopes - a task that now hangs in the balance due to time constraints and traffic congestion concerns.
The Rs 1,621.30-crore flyover project, which began in December 2020, is being executed by the Special Projects Wing of the State Highways Department to ease traffic congestion on the busy Avinashi Road stretch between Uppilipalayam and Chinniyampalayam. The four-lane elevated corridor is 17.25-metre wide and includes 10.5-metre-wide service roads on both sides, along with stormwater drains and footpaths. Officials said 95% of the work has been completed, and the project was earlier slated for completion by July 30.
However, the critical phase of installing girder beams over the railway track near Hopes Junction remains pending. Due to the presence of the existing railway bridge, columns cannot be erected at that stretch. To bridge the 52-metre gap, officials have planned to use eight iron girders, which have arrived from Hyderabad in parts and are currently being assembled at the Government Polytechnic College Ground. Six of the eight girders have already been assembled.

This particular model is the standard version of the Cullinan, not the more exclusive Black Badge variant. When it was available in the market, the standard Cullinan had a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 6.95 crore. In the case of a Rolls-Royce, customizations from Rolls-Royce will always be an add-on to the final price, never an offer for a discount. Several media reports suggest that the Ambani family spent significantly more on bespoke features and personalization than the standard base price of a regular Cullinan. One of the standout features of this particular Rolls-Royce Cullinan is its eye-catching paint job, which is reportedly priced around Rs 1 crore alone. Along with the beautiful exterior, the SUV also has a fully custom interior, pushing individuality and comfort even further. According to reports, they reportedly paid about Rs 12 lakh for the '0001' number plate. Normally, this number costs Rs 4 lakh, but it got so expensive because it had to be bought from a new series. The previously desired numbers in that series had been taken; thus, the RTO made them pay a huge premium, just for the registration.

Contribute now New Delhi: In a matter of two weeks, the number of companies which are awaiting licences from China's Commerce Ministry to procure rare-earth magnets has nearly doubled. While the number of such companies was 11 earlier, it has now increased to 21, with new companies joining the list including Bosch India, Marelli Powertrain India, Mahle Electric Drives India, TVS Motor and Uno Minda, reported The Economic Times. 'These companies have duly filled in and got endorsed the end-user certificate and shipped the requisite documents to their suppliers for procuring rare earth magnets from China, but licences are yet to be awarded by the government there,' a senior industry executive told ET. On April 4, China had issued orders mandating exporters that ship medium and heavy rare earth magnets to seek a licence from its commerce department after getting an end-user certificate from the buyer. The certificate requires buyers to make certain guarantees including the guarantee that these items will not be used for storing, manufacturing, producing or processing weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, 52 companies based in India source magnets from China to supply to automobile manufacturers across India. At present, stakeholders in the electric vehicle (EV) industry are concerned about the fact that inventories of rare-earth magnets used in EV traction motors and power steering systems could run dry by mid-July this year. Rating agency Icra has said that in wake of the depleting inventory, there is a need for urgent contingency planning. In FY 25, India imported around $200 million worth of rare-earth magnets. A majority of these imports were used in automotive and industrial applications. In electric two-wheelers, motors cost between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 15,000, with rare earth magnets accounting for around 30 per cent of the motor cost.
