Mexico threatens to sue Musk's SpaceX over contamination from exploding rockets
A small Texas town just across the border from Mexico is the testing ground for Starship, the hulking spacecraft that Elon Musk hopes will one day ferry people to Mars.
In recent months, multiple test launches have ended in explosions, causing debris to rain down on both countries and in the Gulf of Mexico.
Mexican scientists say the wreckage is killing wildlife, including dolphins, sea turtles and fish.
Amid growing pressure from her constituents, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said this week that her government is investigating the "security and environmental" effects of Musk's rockets and has found that "there is indeed contamination," a charge Musk's company denies.
Sheinbaum said her government is trying to determine whether SpaceX has violated international laws and said Mexico will file 'necessary lawsuits."

Her statements come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Mexico on security, migration and the economy. President Trump's tariffs on Mexican imports and threats of U.S. drone strikes on cartel targets have sparked a surge of nationalism here.
Musk, a billionaire who is also the CEO of Tesla and the owner of X, is closely allied with the U.S. administration, having donated more than a quarter-billion dollars to help elect Trump. For several months this year he was the informal head of Trump's Department of Government Efficiency.
SpaceX said in a post on X that independent tests performed on the material used in Starships confirm that it "does not present any chemical, biological or toxicological risks."
The company said it attempts to recover all debris from exploded devices.
U.S. groups have also blamed SpaceX rockets for environmental degradation. The company's Starbase launch facility in South Texas abuts the Boca Chica Wildlife Refuge, an expanse of tidal flats, mangroves and sand dunes that is home to rare and endangered species including ocelots, sea turtles and northern aplomado falcons.
A coalition including the Sierra Club and a local Native American tribe sued the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, alleging the agencies approved test launches without conducting thorough environmental reviews. They say failed rocket launches have spread concrete and metal debris across thousands of feet of surrounding lands — and once set off a fire that burned several acres of protected dunes.
In Mexico, environmentalists began raising alarms earlier this year after space debris was discovered in the border city of Matamoros, in the Río Bravo — as Mexico calls the Rio Grande — and in the Gulf of Mexico.
A local nonprofit in the state of Tamaulipas issued a report documenting animal deaths in a region known as a nesting ground for manatees, sharks, whales and other animals. It warned particularly about risks to sea turtles who ingest particles of space debris.
The group said it had collected more than a ton of debris scattered along an area more than 25 miles long.
The governor of Tamaulipas said authorities were also looking into the issue. Gov. Américo Villarreal Anaya said his government will verify whether 'the internationally required distances are being respected in order to have these types of facilities so that there is no risk to urban centers.'

US investigates Tesla's Robotaxi launch after videos show erratically driving cars
The main transportation safety regulator in the US is requesting information from Tesla after videos showed the company's self-driving Robotaxis exceeding the speed limit or veering into the wrong lane. The company launched the service in Austin, Texas, over the weekend. Tesla heavily promoted the initial, limited rollout of its Robotaxis, which included pro-Tesla influencers using the paid ride service and showing off footage of their trips. Instead of positive promotion, though, those videos appear to have drawn scrutiny from the National Highway Transit Safety Administration (NHTSA), as the cars struggled to comply with traffic laws. 'NHTSA is aware of the referenced incidents and is in contact with the manufacturer to gather additional information,' the agency said in a statement. Related: Tesla set to unveil self-driving car service in Austin The Robotaxi's debut over the weekend featured about 10 cars with 'safety drivers' in the front passenger seat driving around a circumscribed area of Austin. Although Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, touted the launch as a huge success and vowed it would make driving safer, several influencers posted videos that appeared to show their Robotaxis glitching or speeding. One video – posted by a Tesla investor who formerly hosted a podcast about the company – showed the Robotaxi wobbling as it misjudged a left turn, then going into a lane meant for oncoming traffic before driving across a double yellow line back into the correct lane. No cars were in the lane intended for oncoming traffic at the time. In another video, a pro-Tesla YouTuber praised how the car was going several miles per hour over the speed limit. Musk has bet a large part of the automaker's future on its Robotaxi program, for years selling a vision of the future in which millions of his driverless cars roam cities all over the world. Both watchdogs and investors are closely scrutinizing if Tesla can turn the possibility into a reality or whether it joins a long list of Musk's missed promises. 'I predict that there will be millions of Teslas operating fully autonomously in the second half of next year,' Musk said during an earnings call in April. He made a similar statement in 2019. The NHTSA does not pre-approve new technologies or driving systems, it said in a statement. Instead, manufacturers certify their vehicles meet agency standards, then investigators look into potential safety defects. The NHTSA assesses reports and relevant information then decides on how to address road safety issues. 'NHTSA will continue to enforce the law on all manufacturers of motor vehicles and equipment, in accordance with the Vehicle Safety Act and our data-driven, risk-based investigative process,' the agency stated. Robotaxis have taken on increased importance for Tesla this year as sales have fallen and year-on-year profits dropped 71% over the first quarter of 2025, amid backlash against Musk's far-right politics. While revenues have declined, Musk has vowed that Tesla's Robotaxis will become the future of transportation. In addition to its preliminary inquiry into the Robotaxis, the NHTSA also has an open investigation into Tesla, begun in 2024, over whether the automaker's 'Full-Self Driving' mode is safe during conditions that reduce roadway visibility. A Tesla allegedly using the autonomous feature struck and killed a 71-year-old woman in 2023 while the sun was setting and casting glare over the road in Arizona.

‘Lidar is lame': why Elon Musk's vision for a self-driving Tesla taxi faltered
After years of promising investors that millions of Tesla robotaxis would soon fill the streets, Elon Musk debuted his driverless car service in a limited public rollout in Austin, Texas. It did not go smoothly. The 22 June launch initially appeared successful enough, with a flood of videos from pro-Tesla social media influencers praising the service and sharing footage of their rides. Musk celebrated it as a triumph, and the following day, Tesla's stock rose nearly 10%. What quickly became apparent, however, was that the same influencer videos Musk promoted also depicted the self-driving cars appearing to break traffic laws or struggle to properly function. By Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had opened an investigation into the service and requested information from Tesla on the incidents. If Tesla's limited rollout of the robotaxi service was the culmination of more than a decade of work, as Musk touted on X, its struggles are also emblematic of technical decisions and fixations that the world's richest person has embraced as he pursues the goal of a fully autonomous car. Musk has cast the concept of a driverless car as a core part of the company's future business, and, as sales have sharply fallen this year, he has vowed that its robotaxi service will rapidly and drastically expand. Yet the faltering launch this week suggests Tesla is still facing technological challenges that have attracted regulators' notice, delayed Musk's vision of a robotaxi on every corner, and highlighted the gulf between it and its driverless rival, Waymo. The robotaxi launch featured about 10 cars traveling in a limited area of Austin with safety drivers in the passenger seat. The pilot included other restrictions, such as not operating in bad weather or during certain nighttime hours. Rides, which the company offered to a host of handpicked influencers, cost $4.20, in keeping with Musk's proclivity for cannabis memes. 'Tesla self-driving can be deployed anywhere it's approved. It does not require expensive, specialized equipment or extensive mapping of service areas,' an official Tesla account posted on X the day of the launch. 'It just works.' Footage from at least 11 rides showed that the trial run did not pan out as flawlessly as Tesla's tweet suggested. In one case, a robotaxi failed to make a left turn and instead drove into a lane meant for oncoming traffic, then corrected itself by driving across a double yellow line. Other videos appeared to show the cars exceeding the speed limit, braking for no discernible reason and dropping passengers off in the middle of an intersection. The videos drew the attention of the NHTSA, which said in a statement it was aware of the incidents and had contacted Tesla to obtain more information. Musk, meanwhile, posted throughout the technical failures and regulatory inquiry, retweeting pro-Tesla influencers who praised the service. One account Musk posted showed off a video of a robotaxi stopping to avoid running down a peacock crossing the road, and another told followers: 'Don't listen to the media.' Musk has long insisted that using only cameras on driverless cars is the singular way to achieve true self-driving capability. Tesla's consumer vehicles come with what it calls 'autopilot' and 'full self-driving' features that allow drivers to cruise on the highway hands-free. They rely on multiple external cameras to navigate, steer and brake. The company's robotaxis use similar software and also depend solely on cameras. The reliance on cameras alone stands in sharp contrast with other autonomous vehicle companies such as Waymo and Zoox. Those companies use arrays that combine cameras and sensors, including radar and lidar. For example, the newest version of a driverless Waymo uses about 40 external cameras and sensors, whereas a Tesla with one of the latest versions of full self-driving uses about eight external cameras, according to an analysis by Bloomberg. Lidar and radar allow for self-driving cars to better detect objects in bad weather and poor lighting. Despite the advantages to lidar and radar, Musk has been adamant that Tesla remain lidar-free. 'Lidar is lame,' Musk said during a Tesla autonomy day in 2019. 'In cars, it's friggin' stupid. It's expensive and unnecessary.' Lidar is far more expensive, costing roughly $12,000 per vehicle, as compared with cameras, which come in at around $400 per car, according to Bloomberg. Musk maintains that camera-only technology is the most 'human' way to approach self-driving, since people use their eyes to navigate the road. Musk's insistence on camera-only technology has landed Tesla in hot water over fatal crashes involving drivers using the full self-driving feature. The company is now the focus of government investigations and civil lawsuits, which allege that full self-driving is impeded by weather conditions such as sun glare, fog, dust and darkness. There have been at least 736 crashes and 17 deaths involving the technology, according to an analysis by the Washington Post. 'Tesla continues to have this fetishistic view that it's going to operate its system solely on cameras, despite every intelligent human being in this entire space saying that can't be done,' said Brett Schreiber, an attorney who represents several alleged victims of Tesla's autopilot failures. 'Everyone who has been following collision-avoidant technology since the 90s knows that the holy trinity is radar, lidar and cameras.' Schreiber said he was not surprised to see the wobbling rollout of Tesla's robotaxis in Austin. 'What you're also going to see, which is the true tragedy of this thing, is people continuing to be injured and killed by this technology,' he said. 'And that's where it becomes less of a 'Oh, isn't that cute? The vehicle can't make a left' to now we're actually at someone's funeral because of the choices Tesla makes.' Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on the lawsuits, government investigations and crashes involving full self-driving. The differences between Waymo and Tesla's approaches to launching commercial self-driving services in dense cities don't end with the debate over lidar versus cameras. Waymo is seen widely as the frontrunner in the self-driving race in the US – a race that was once crowded with dozens of automakers, VC-backed startups and ride-share companies and has since been whittled down to just a handful of major players. There are numerous reasons why Waymo has outlasted so many of its competitors and why it's ahead of the curve. The Google subsidiary has historically spent months, if not years, mapping cities and testing its vehicles in them before launching. In San Francisco, one of the first cities where Waymo launched its fully driverless commercial service, the company began mapping out and testing its service in 2021 before launching it to the public in 2024. Even with a careful and gradual city-by-city approach, Waymo, which launched as a project under Google's X research lab in 2009, has encountered problems with its self-driving cars. Earlier this year, Waymo had to recall more than 1,200 of its vehicles over a software issue that was causing collisions with chains, gates and other stationary roadway barriers. The NHTSA also launched an investigation into the company last year after the agency received 22 reports of Waymo vehicles acting erratically or potentially violating traffic safety laws. Contrast Waymo's approach with Tesla's. While Tesla is still in the testing phase of its service, its robotaxi launch in Austin is the first time the car company's fully self-driving technology is being unleashed in the wild. The company has not released information on whether, or how long, it has spent mapping out or testing the driverless technology on Austin's streets. The launch is reminiscent of Uber's first foray into a self-driving ride-share service in 2016. The company launched a self-driving pilot in San Francisco without seeking a permit from the California department of motor vehicles, as was required. On the first day of the pilot, an Uber vehicle ran a red light. The company was forced to shut down the service a week later after the DMV revoked its registration. An Uber self-driving executive at the time had pushed the company's engineers to rush to launch the San Francisco pilot to attract more investor and public attention. After being sued by Waymo over its self-driving operations and struggling to catch up to its competitors, Uber sold its self-driving arm in 2020. Tesla also did not have a permit to operate its robotaxi service in Austin. Texas does not currently have a process to acquire a permit and won't have one in place until September. While there's at the moment less visibility into what Tesla's rollout of its robotaxi service looked like behind the scenes, the automaker is no stranger to rushing to meet deadlines set publicly by Musk. With the launch of robotaxis, Musk, who has been promising that Teslas will be fully self-driving since at least 2016, is perhaps getting closer to meeting the deadline that he set and has deferred several times over the past 10 years. Tesla's IPO was 15 years ago. The stock is up almost 300-fold since then
At the time of Tesla's IPO 15 years ago, the company had generated roughly $150 million in revenue in its lifetime. That came almost entirely from the Roadster, a two-seat electric sportscar that boasted a range of 236 miles on a single charge. The Model S sedan was still in the lab, two years away from hitting the market. "The Model S, which is planned to compete in the premium vehicle market, is intended to have a significantly broader customer base than the Tesla Roadster," the company said in its IPO filing, ahead of its planned $226 million offering. A bet on Tesla, which debuted on the Nasdaq on June 29, 2010, was a wager on CEO Elon Musk's ability to develop a roster of mass-market electric cars and scale an automaker far away from the Detroit auto hub, focusing instead on Silicon Valley, home to much of the world's top tech talent. Musk didn't start Tesla, but he invested early, served as chairman and took over as CEO in October 2008, after leading a board revolt against founding CEO and inventor Martin Eberhard early that year. An investor who put $10,000 into Tesla's stock at the time of the company's IPO and held onto all those shares would now own a stake worth close to $3 million. A similar investment at the time in the S&P 500 would have resulted in holdings worth about $57,000. Far removed from its days as an experimental clean-tech startup led by a member of the "PayPal mafia," Tesla is now the eighth most-valuable publicly traded U.S. company, with a market cap of over $1 trillion after nearly hitting $100 billion in revenue last year. The Roadster is largely in the history books, and the Model S is no longer of great importance to the company's bottom line. Rather, it's Tesla's top-selling Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan, along with sales of environmental regulatory credits, that helped define the company's financial success over the past decade. But for the 54-year-old Musk (his birthday was Saturday), now the world's wealthiest person, that's the past. He's told investors that the reason to buy and own Tesla stock from here has almost nothing to do with selling cars to consumers. "If somebody doesn't believe Tesla's going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company," Musk said on an earnings call in April of last year. He added, "We will, and we are." Two months after that, Musk said his company's Optimus humanoid robots that he hopes some day will perform like R2-D2 and C-3PO in Star Wars, could some day lift Tesla's market cap to $25 trillion. Musk, who last year characterized himself as "pathologically optimistic," has said he expects thousands of Optimus robots to be working in Tesla factories by the end of 2025, and that the company will begin selling the robot next year. As for autonomy, Tesla currently lags behind Alphabet's Waymo, which is operating public robotaxi services in several U.S. markets, and Baidu's Apollo Go in China. Tesla's Robotaxi just launched a very limited pilot service in Austin, Texas, earlier this month, and said Friday it had completed its first driverless delivery of a new car to a customer. While Tesla still has its share of fanatics and a largely bullish slate of analysts, Wall Street is skeptical of Musk's futuristic promises or sees them as baked into the stock price. The stock is down about 20% this year, badly underperforming major U.S. indexes and trailing all of its megacap tech peers. Apple, down 19.7% for the year, is the only one close. Earlier in June, Tesla's vice president of Optimus robotics, Milan Kovac, said he's leaving the company after a nine-year tenure, and Musk more recently fired Omead Afshar, the automaker's vice president of manufacturing and operations. Meanwhile, Tesla EV sales have been sluggish in 2025, with automotive revenue suffering a second straight year-over-year decline in the first quarter due to an aging lineup and bustling competition, especially from lower-cost Chinese manufacturers. New Tesla sales in Europe fell for a fifth straight month in May, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, or ACEA, and Tesla's newest model, the Cybertruck, has failed to gain significant traction in the U.S. after a series of recalls. Hovering over Tesla's business is the unpredictability of Musk. Long glorified for his business success — through PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX, brain tech startup Neuralink and artificial intelligence company xAI, among other pursuits — Musk asserted himself in the political realm last year, when he endorsed Donald Trump for president and subsequently injected nearly $300 million into his campaign and related Republican causes. Musk spent the first few months of 2025 spearheading President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), slashing the size of the federal government and stripping resources from regulatory agencies, including those tasked with oversight of his companies. But his pivot to politics came at a cost, at least in the short term. Musk's vocal and financial support of Trump, endorsement of Germany's far-right AfD party and extended string of charged and divisive remarks and gestures, including on his social network X and in press appearances, has been correlated with declines in Tesla's reputation, and a drop in his overall favorability, according to polling data. "Unless Tesla can come up with a whole range of new products that will really excite consumers, and unless they can mitigate some of the antagonism caused by their leader, they will be seen as past their peak and will begin to go down," David Haigh, CEO of research and consulting firm Brand Finance, said in January. Brand Finance's data showed that the value of Tesla's brand fell by 26% in 2024, a second straight annual decline. That was before Musk's time working in the second Trump administration. Musk's official tenure in Washington, D.C., ended earlier in June, just as his relationship with the president was souring. Shares of Tesla fell 14% on June 5, as President Trump threatened to pull government contracts for Musk's companies, escalating a war of words over the president's spending bill. Musk temporarily slowed his posting about politics on social media after that, and appeared to focus more on promoting his businesses. But this weekend he resumed attacking portions of the bill that would hamper solar and renewable energy companies, including Tesla. Whether Musk is now focused enough to solve Tesla's problems and, even if he is, whether that's a big catalyst for the company, is very much up in the air. Musk and Tesla didn't respond to a request for comment. Tesla investors have learned that volatility is a big part of the story, and has been since the company's stock market debut. On more than 40 occasions in the past 15 years, Tesla's stock has gained or lost at least 20% in a single month. Here are the three best and worst months for the stock and what happened to cause these hefty moves: May 2013 In Tesla's best month on record, the stock jumped 81%. The company for the first time reported a quarterly profit, albeit a very narrow one. It didn't mark a sudden turn to profitability, as Tesla continued to lose money until 2018. But sales of Model S cars topped estimates as did revenue from zero emission vehicle (ZEV) credits, which have long been a boon for the company and have sometimes been the difference between a quarter ending in the red or the black. August 2020 Following a big dip in the early days of the Covid pandemic, Tesla's stock began an historic rally, leading to an eightfold increase in the stock in 2020, by far its best year on record. Its single best month that year was August, when the share price jumped 74%. Model 3 sales were accelerating rapidly, but much of the momentum was tied to buzz that the company could soon enter the S&P 500, and a pandemic market boom, when retail investors poured into meme stocks, cryptocurrencies and FOMO (fear of missing out) assets. Tesla's big announcement in August 2020 was a five-for-one stock split, with the share price having soared well past $1,000. Tesla would split its stock again in 2022. November 2010 Tesla's 62% rally in its fifth full month as a public company was as much a sign of early volatility as anything else. The next month, the company would lose almost a quarter of its value, wiping out most of those gains. Tesla's cash position at the end of 2010 was precarious enough that the company warned it may need to raise more money in the future, particularly "if there are delays in the launch of the Model S." On Nov. 9, 2010, Tesla reported a 31% drop in year-over-year revenue to $31.2 million and a net loss of $35 million. A week earlier, the company said Panasonic had invested $30 million in Tesla through a private placement. December 2022 Tesla's steepest monthly slump on record was a 37% decline to wrap up 2022, which was the worst year for the Nasdaq since the 2008 financial crisis. The company faced a production halt at its Shanghai facility, which was dealing with a fresh onslaught of Covid cases. Musk had been selling Tesla stock in big chunks to fund his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, which he later renamed X. Musk said on Twitter Spaces on Dec. 22 that he wouldn't be selling any stock for 18 to 24 months. In a debate with a Tesla shareholder, he pinned Tesla's declining share price on Federal Reserve rate hikes, writing that "people will increasingly move their money out of stocks into cash, thus causing stocks to drop." The distraction of the Twitter deal weighed on Tesla shares, and Musk also frustrated some shareholders by borrowing personnel from the Tesla Autopilot team to work on his social media company's technology. February 2025 What was supposed to be a honeymoon period for Tesla, thanks to Trump's return to the White House, turned into a massive selloff, with the stock plummeting 28% in February. In its earnings report in late January, Tesla said automotive revenue sank 8% from a year earlier and the company reported a 23% drop in operating income. Tesla cited reduced average selling prices across its Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X lines as a major reason for the decline. Investors also worried about impending tariffs on goods and materials coming from Canada and Mexico, where some of its key suppliers are based. With Musk ramping up his political rhetoric, new vehicle registrations dropped in Europe, plummeting in Germany by around 60% in January from a year earlier. January 2024 The beginning of 2024 was almost as bad for Tesla, with the stock tumbling 25% to open the year. The company reported revenue and profit for the fourth quarter that trailed estimates, partly because of steep price cuts around the world. Tesla warned that volume growth in 2024 "may be notably lower" than in 2023, and cautioned investors that it was "currently between two major growth waves." There were countless other monumental moments for Tesla along the way and, had Musk gotten his wish in 2018, the IPO anniversary may have never taken place. "Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured," Musk infamously tweeted in August of that year. Tesla's stock trading was initially halted and shares were volatile for weeks. A take-private never occurred. The SEC investigated and charged Musk with civil securities fraud as a result of the tweets. Tesla and Musk struck a revised settlement agreement in 2019 over those charges. The agreement forced Musk to temporarily relinquish his role as chairman of the Tesla board, a position that's now held by Robyn Denholm.
