
Trump's First Surgeon General: RFK Jr. Purging the CDC Advisory Committee Will Put Lives at Risk
When Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. began his tenure as Health and Human Services Secretary, he pledged, 'We won't take away anyone's vaccines.' However, recent policy changes under his leadership—coupled with the unprecedented dismissal of all 17 members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on June 9—have proven that statement false, raising grave concerns for our nation's COVID-19 response and broader vaccine policies. These shifts not only jeopardize public health but also threaten to erode trust in our health institutions at a critical time.
In May 2025, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) introduced a new COVID-19 vaccine framework, limiting access to updated vaccines for Americans aged 65 and older or those with specific risk factors. Furthermore, Secretary Kennedy announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would no longer recommend COVID-19 vaccines for 'healthy' children or pregnant women—bypassing the standard ACIP review process.
Compounding these changes, the abrupt removal of ACIP's entire panel of independent experts, who have guided evidence-based vaccine policy for decades, risks destabilizing a cornerstone of public health. These actions collectively restrict access to a vital tool for saving lives and undermine confidence in our health systems.
During my tenure as Surgeon General under the first Trump administration, we faced significant public health challenges, from addressing the opioid epidemic by increasing access to Naloxone to launching Operation Warp Speed for the COVID-19 vaccine development effort. The vaccines developed under Trump's first term have proven to be one of our most effective defenses against COVID-19; yet, the current administration's new policies limit their availability, potentially leaving millions vulnerable. The dismissal of ACIP's experts—without a clear plan for replacing them with qualified scientists—further jeopardizes trust in the institutions tasked with protecting Americans.
The major flaw in the new vaccine framework is its narrow assessment of risk. Although the immediate dangers of COVID-19 have lessened, it remains a leading cause of death and hospitalization, claiming nearly 50,000 lives in the U.S. in 2024—more than breast cancer or car accidents. The fact is, 75% of Americans have risk factors, such as obesity or diabetes, that increase their vulnerability to severe COVID outcomes. However, the burden is now placed on individuals to self-identify as high risk, creating confusion and inconsistency in access. Unlike other countries with centralized systems for identifying at-risk individuals, the U.S. expects patients—many of whom lack easy access to healthcare—to navigate eligibility alone.
Risk assessment should also consider individual circumstances beyond underlying health conditions. A 58-year-old bus driver or healthcare worker faces significantly greater exposure than someone working remotely. By limiting vaccines to specific groups based solely on preexisting health status, the policy overlooks these critical contextual differences.
Secretary Kennedy's team argues that there is insufficient evidence to support updated COVID-19 vaccines for healthy Americans under 65, but this claim is flatly unfounded. Years of real-world data demonstrate that vaccines save lives and reduce hospitalizations across all age groups. During the 2023 to 2024 fall and winter season, 95% of those hospitalized for COVID had not received an updated vaccine. While the administration cites other countries' more restrictive vaccine policies, such comparisons ignore the unique health landscape in the U.S., which includes higher obesity rates, worse maternal health outcomes, and uneven healthcare access.
The policy also neglects the issue of Long COVID, which affects millions with debilitating symptoms lasting months or years. Though older adults are at higher risk for severe acute infections, Long COVID disproportionately impacts adults aged 35 to 49—and children are also affected. Vaccination reduces the risk of developing Long COVID, an essential reason many healthy individuals choose to stay up-to-date with their vaccines.
Particularly concerning is the decision to end COVID vaccine recommendations for 'healthy' pregnant women, which contradicts the FDA's own guidance. Pregnant women face heightened risks of severe COVID outcomes, including death, pre-eclampsia, and miscarriage. Vaccination during pregnancy is crucial—not just for maternal health but also for protecting infants under six months, who cannot be vaccinated and rely on maternal antibodies for protection. Decades of research confirm that vaccines, including COVID vaccines, safely transfer antibodies to newborns, lowering their risk of severe illness.
The dismissal of ACIP's members amplifies these concerns. ACIP has been a trusted, science-driven body that ensures vaccines are safe and effective, saving countless lives through its transparent recommendations. Its members, rigorously vetted for expertise and conflicts of interest, provide independent guidance critical to public health. Removing them without clear evidence of misconduct risks replacing qualified scientists with less experienced voices. This move fuels vaccine hesitancy and skepticism about public health decisions, particularly when paired with the bypassing of ACIP's review process for the new COVID vaccine policies.
These changes create uncertainty about who can access vaccines. Without clear CDC recommendations, insurance companies may impose their own coverage criteria, potentially increasing costs for a vaccine that was previously free for most Americans. Healthcare providers, lacking federal guidance and ACIP's expertise, may struggle to advise patients, leading to a confusing and inequitable system that limits choice—hardly the 'medical freedom' Secretary Kennedy claims to champion.
Ultimately, these actions threaten to erode trust in public health. FDA officials argue the new framework enhances transparency, yet bypassing ACIP's review and dismissing its members undermines that aim. Extensive data demonstrate that updated vaccines lower hospitalization and death rates, yet this evidence was sidelined. Such actions breed skepticism, making it harder to unite Americans around shared health goals.
The stakes are high, but a better path is possible. Restoring trust requires transparent, evidence-based policymaking that prioritizes access to life-saving tools. I urge Secretary Kennedy and the administration to reconsider this framework, reinstate ACIP's role in vaccine policy, and ensure any new appointees are qualified, independent experts. If concerns about ACIP exist, they should be addressed through reform, not dissolution. Healthcare providers and community leaders must also educate patients about vaccination benefits, particularly for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and those with high exposure. Individuals can take action by staying informed, discussing vaccination with their doctors, and advocating for clear, equitable access to vaccines.
By working together—government, providers, and citizens—we can protect lives, reduce the burden of Long COVID, and rebuild confidence in our public health system. We must seize this opportunity to unite around science and ensure a healthier, safer, and prosperous future for all Americans.

Trump Admin Brings Back Hundreds of CDC Staffers it Previously Fired
The Trump administration is reversing its decision to fire hundreds of staffers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in a humiliating about-turn. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) told STAT that the CDC will be bringing back more than 450 employees that were fired in an attempt to reorganize the agency. Some of the departments that will be reinstating employees are: The National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention; the Global Health Center; the National Center for Environmental Health; the Immediate Office of the Director. These divisions helped track and prevent HIV, prevent lead poisoning in children, as well as ensure that cruise lines were safe from disease. HHS, which also oversees the CDC, first announced this 'dramatic restructuring' in March, saying that they would downsize from 82,000 to 62,000 full-time employees, claiming that it would 'save taxpayers $1.8 billion per year.' The department also revealed that it would be creating a new division called the Administration for a Healthy America (AHA), which would be led by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 'We aren't just reducing bureaucratic sprawl. We are realigning the organization with its core mission and our new priorities in reversing the chronic disease epidemic,' Kennedy said. 'This Department will do more—a lot more—at a lower cost to the taxpayer,' he claimed. He reaffirmed this sentiment in an X post in March, noting that these cuts would help eliminate the current 'alphabet soup of departments.' 'We are streamlining HHS to make our agency more efficient and more effective. We will eliminate an entire alphabet soup of departments,' he said. As a result, around 10,000 employees were fired under the guidance of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Yet Kennedy has already backtracked on these sweeping federal layoffs, admitting in April that too many cuts were made in the effort to 'Make America Healthy Again,' though he said that 'was always the plan.' 'We're streamlining the agencies. We're going to make it work for public health, make it work for the American people. In the course of that, there were a number of instances where studies that should have not have been cut were cut, and we've reinstated them,' Kennedy said. 'Personnel that should not have been cut were cut—we're reinstating them, and that was always the plan,' he stated.

Rockefeller Foundation Releases New Polling Data: Majority of Americans Want Food is Medicine Programs
Nearly 80% of Americans think food and nutrition should be covered by insurance to address chronic disease NEW YORK, June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- New polling data from The Rockefeller Foundation shows that more than four in five adults in the United States – across demographics, income levels, party affiliations, and geographies – support integrating Food is Medicine (FIM) programs into U.S. healthcare. The survey, conducted by Hattaway Communications, highlights high interest but low public awareness of FIM programs, which aim to treat and manage chronic disease by increasing access to nutritious foods. The research underscores the perceived benefits of Food is Medicine programs, with 79% of respondents reporting that FIM programs would personally help them eat better after they received a definition of the intervention. "Americans want nutrition and food solutions to help them eat better, improve their health, and save money," said Dr. Rajiv J. Shah, President of The Rockefeller Foundation. "We know that these programs are effective in helping patients manage diet-related chronic disease and are cost-effective too. Now, it's even clearer that there is a huge opportunity to improve Americans' health outcomes by investing in low-cost, individualized Food is Medicine solutions that are both proven and popular." Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, impact an estimated 133 million Americans—more than 38% (or one-third) of the total U.S. population—and cost the United States $1.1 trillion per year (equivalent to what the U.S. spends on food itself). The vast majority of chronic conditions are diet-related: In the United States alone, poor diets contribute to 500,000 deaths annually. Modeling on medically tailored meals shows that investing in FIM programs could save an estimated $32.1 billion a year, significantly reducing Americans' healthcare costs. Even still, only 13% of Americans polled said they knew about FIM programs, which include interventions such as medically tailored meals and prescriptions for accessing fruits and vegetables, coupled with nutrition support. When presented with the definition of what they entail, survey respondents (84%) resoundingly supported the efforts. Some of the key findings include: More than 4 in 5 Americans believe U.S. healthcare should offer more food and nutrition programs to treat and manage illnesses. Nearly 9 in 10 patients would prefer to rely more on healthy eating than on medications to manage their conditions. Nearly 4 in 5 Americans think that Food is Medicine programs should be covered by both public and private insurance, including 85% of self-identified Democrats and 78% of Republicans. 84% of respondents believed FIM could help improve the overall quality of health in the United States. 79% of respondents said FIM programs could help them personally. 49% of the American public and 67% of healthcare workers view high costs of nutritious food as the single largest barrier to eating well. "We are seeing a growing awareness of diet-related diseases and their consequences in the U.S.," said Devon Klatell, Vice President for the Food Initiative at The Rockefeller Foundation. "This polling data shows that Americans want more support to eat well and live well. Food is Medicine programs are one tool that health care practitioners and providers must be considering as they work to address chronic disease in America." The Rockefeller Foundation commissioned Hattaway Communications to conduct the survey, which polled respondents across all 50 states between February 28 and March 11, 2025. The survey sampled 2,271 respondents, including 1,135 patients and 399 healthcare workers. The sample was weighted by gender and education to align with the actual proportions within the population and is representative of racial demographics across the U.S. Since 2019, The Rockefeller Foundation has supported Food is Medicine programs and invested in research to improve their effectiveness and understand the benefits and costs. As part of this effort, The Foundation announced its $100 million investment to expand access to Food is Medicine, including supporting vital research like the American Heart Association's Health Care by Food Initiative. The Foundation also initiated partnerships with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to speed the integration of Food Is Medicine into health systems. MTV's Ananda Lewis Dies at 52
Ananda Lewis, a former MTV VJ, has died at the age of 52. Lakshmi Emory, whom Lewis once described as a 'phenomenal sister' in a birthday message, shared news of her death in a June 11 Facebook post. 'She's free, and in His heavenly arms,' she wrote next to a black-and-white photo of Lewis. 'Lord, rest her soul.' Emory did not share additional details, including Lewis' cause of death. Lewis was an MTV staple in the late '90s, hosting 'Total Request Live' and video countdown show'Hot Zone.' She also hosted her own talk show 'The Ananda Lewis Show' in 2001. Lewis was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2019, but later revealed that she opted against the double mastectomy doctors recommended at the time. In a January 2025 op-ed for Essence, Lewis shared that she tried alternative methods to monitor her breast cancer, including cuting out alcohol, sugar, monthly ultrasounds, high-dose vitamin C IVs, hyperbaric chamber sessions and qigong exercise, among others. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she discovered that her tumor had grown and underwent genetically targeted fractionated chemotherapy, which is a treatment that destroys cancer cells without harming healthy ones, according to Cleveland Clinic. However, a PET scan done in October 2023 confirmed that her cancer had progressed to Stage 4 cancer. This time, she shared that she underwent treatment at an integrative facility. While Lewis had previously said she regretted refusing to undergo mammograms out of fear of radiation exposure, she urged the importance of women getting informed and learning about prevention. In her 2025 Essence piece, she wrote, 'Going into 2025, I would say to women: Do everything in your power to avoid my story becoming yours. If I had known what I know now 10 years ago, perhaps I wouldn't have ended up here.' Adding, 'I encourage people to look at the information and studies that exist.
