High-Rated HEPA Air Purifiers On Amazon
If news about the air quality in the Midwest and on the East Coast has you concerned about air inside your home, you should consider purchasing an air purifier.
'Poor indoor air quality can be two to five times more polluted than outdoors because of the lack of fresh air, circulation and ventilation,' respiratory therapist Joyce Baker previously told us, citing an assessment from the Environmental Protection Agency. Most air purifiers work by drawing air through an internal filter, trapping contaminants, and then re-circulating the clean air back into the room. Ones that offer the added benefit of a HEPA filter can provide increased filtration of airborne particles, and those with a HEPA filter are the most effective against smoke.
If you're looking to obtain one of these household appliances quickly, Amazon may be your go-to. Ahead, we've rounded up some of the highest-rated air purifiers that the site has to offer.
A highly-rated Coway purifier for larger spaces
If you want to use a HEPA air purifier in an even larger space, the Coway Airmega 200M is a great choice (Wirecutter named it one of the best air purifiers you can buy). It will work in spaces up to 361 square feet, and its auto mode will kick into higher gear when it senses that your air quality is compromised. It's got three layers of protection: a pre-filter, deodorization filter and True HEPA filter, and in addition to removing 99.999% of 0.01-micron particles, Coway says it also removes 99% of volatile organic compounds and odors. The filters are extremely easy to replace and/or wash when needed. Promising review: "I first used this air purifier in my child's room. My child has seasonal allergies, and after using this air purifier, the allergy symptoms definitely improved, and the air in the room feels fresher. I liked the Coway airmega purifier so much that I replaced the previous one in the living room with a Coway model. Since then, the air quality in the entire house has improved. One of the best features is Eco Mode. When we're out or when there's no one home, I leave it running in Eco Mode, and it keeps the air quality great all day without wasting energy. After a day out, I come home to fresh, clean air. I'm really happy with the results. Replacing the filter is easy, and the noise is minimal, so it doesn't disturb me even in the living room. I highly recommend this air purifier for anyone sensitive to allergies or dust! It's not only great in performance, but the design is sleek and fits well with the decor of the house" —Jane LeePrice: $169.99 (available in two styles)
An air purifier with a 360-degree intake
Levoit's Core 300 HEPA air purifier has an all-around air intake and can clean smoke and allergens from up to 1,095 square feet. It also has a sleep mode for even quieter operation and the option to turn off display lights so they won't disturb your slumber. The triple-layer filtration system includes a pre-filter, HEPA filter and activated carbon filter. And Amazon buyers love it: The Core 300 has a 4.7-star rating from more than 87,000 users. Promising review: "This might be the best product I've ever owned. I know that sounds dramatic but it's truly life changing. I have terrible allergies including being allergic to cats which I have two of. This helps tremendously. I put it in the same room as their litter boxes and the smell is completely gone. Like 100% gone. Not just masked or covered up. I've tried so many things to help with the smell and nothing has ever worked like this. I actually watched a clump of fur in the air get sucked into the machine… wow!! Super easy to set up, doesn't take up too much space or look bad, love everything about it! Highly recommended especially if you have allergies and/or pets. If you're considering getting this, get it!!!! (Also side note, I just used the regular filter that comes with this. I know they have one that's specifically made to help with pet odors and allergies but so far I find the original one works great for me and my cats but if you have more animals or stronger odors and find the regular doesn't work, try the pet-specific one?!) (I also use it on the highest setting and it does have a 'white noise' sound to it but it doesn't bother me personally and I don't find it extremely loud.)" —AmandaPrice: $99.99+ (available in two colors)
An air purifier you can control from your phone
This Levoit Vital100S will not only clean the air in a space up to 1,110 square feet, but you can see real-time air quality readings, set a timer, create an automated schedule, check filter life and turn it on and off all from a smartphone. The True HEPA filter is joined by a washable pre-filter and an activated carbon filter for optimum efficacy. Promising review: "We purchased this to have as an all-around home air purifier. We have one in the back of the house and one in the front. Our daughter has allergies and I have asthma and with pets we wanted to do the best we could to keep our home air as clean as possible. We keep ours in auto mode at all times. Generally it stays in a 'good air quality' mode and when I pass it I end up putting my hand above the output to make sure it is actually running as you cannot hear it at all. The first night we had it we made BLT's and as always the bacon smoked up the house a little and the air purifier kicked in and went into 'bad air quality' mode and the house was cleared within15 minutes easily. And this was even with the air purifier in the next room over. The quality of it seems really well made, it is easy to manage and the filters are easily accessible which is nice for cleaning the large particle grate. Would definitely recommend this item to others." —ErinPrice: $139.99+ (available in two colors)

My All-Time Favorite Headphones for the Outdoors Are 11% Off now
For anyone who walks, runs, cycles or does just about anything outside on a regular basis, I always give the same piece of advice: Ditch those noise-canceling headphones. Don't get me wrong. I have a pair of big over-the-ear headphones that have spectacular noise cancellation and I love them. But when I'm outside -- especially if I'm close to fast-moving cars and heavy traffic -- I need to be able to hear the world around me and not just my music or whatever podcast I'm bingeing at the moment. In those cases, I want something like the OpenFit true wireless headphones from Shokz. I love a good pair of headphones but I don't love spending a ton of money on them. My threshold is about $100, which is why when all of my cycling friends started raving about bone-conduction headphones a few years back, I was more than a little hesitant because I would probably only use them when working out. However, now is a great time to get in on this innovative headphone technology. The Shokz OpenFit headphones are currently marked down to $160 at Amazon, which is a discount of $20. These headphones are designed to be used in places where bone conduction may not be enough and, as a result, I'm rarely seen without mine on. You can grab these headphones at a great price in black and beige. A week after I picked these up, I was nearly sideswiped by a pickup truck and the only thing that saved me was hearing it come up behind me. There's a reason these are recommended on our list of the best running headphones you can buy. If you're looking for outdoor-friendly workout headphones, my first recommendation is always Shokz, formerly known as Aftershokz. Bone-conduction headphones sit just outside your ear, resting on the bone. Music vibrates through a set of pads into your skull and you hear those sounds as if they're coming from a speaker a few feet away. You can hear everything you're listening to on your phone without interrupting the sounds coming from the rest of the world around you. For cyclists and runners -- really anyone who does anything outside -- this is a game-changing experience. It's more accurate and pleasing than traditional headphones with "passthrough mode" and you sacrifice very little in audio quality. My favorite bone-conduction headphones -- and I've tried them all -- are the OpenRun Pro headphones from Shokz. They're waterproof (which means they're easy to clean when I'm all sweaty), the battery lasts me about 7 hours on a charge (perfect for those 70-mile riding days), and they're comfortable enough that I can wear them all day and not feel them pressing on me. They charge magnetically with a proprietary charger but Shokz includes two cables in the box in case you lose things, as I do. If these headphones are a little rich for your blood, no worries. Shokz also has cheaper OpenRun and OpenMove bone-conduction headphones with up to 6 hours of battery life and IP55 dust and water resistance. Whether you're physically active outdoors or you just like exploring new things, I highly recommend giving these headphones a try. The Shokz OpenMove make a great gift for an outdoor runner The Shokz make a great gift, either for yourself or the outdoor runner in your life. Not only are they the best of their kind but giving these to a runner may also give you some peace of mind to know they're a little safer when they're out running alongside busy streets or other high-traffic areas. Bill Gates Pledging $200 Billion to a Worthy Cause
Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft with his late friend and business partner Paul Allen. The company became a major part of the computer age, and Gates amassed billions in fortune following the success of the company's hardware and software. He became the world's youngest billionaire at the age of 31, the year after Microsoft went public. Gates then became the world's first centibillionaire, with a net worth of over $100 billion. After stepping down from many of his Microsoft-related duties, Gates has dedicated the most recent portion of his life to philanthropy. In line with that pursuit, Gates has contributed to several foundations and causes that aim to improve the lives of others. On Monday, Gates announced his intention for one of his most substantial donation efforts. "I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years. The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa," Gates said on Monday in Ethiopia, according to a statement from his charity. "By unleashing human potential through health and education, every country in Africa should be on a path to prosperity — and that path is an exciting thing to be part of," he added, noting that his net worth would drop by 99% over the next 20 years as a result of the pledge. Gates, his ex-wife Melinda, Warren Buffett and others joined The Giving Pledge, which encourages billionaires to donate 50% or more of their wealth to philanthropic causes and humanitarian efforts. Other notable signees include Elon Musk, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg and MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Earlier this month, Gates said that he was inspired to donate the majority of his fortune after reading a quote from industrialist Andrew Carnegie. In his 1899 essay "The Gospel of Wealth," Carnegie said that "the man who dies thus rich dies disgraced." Gates made his announcement at Nelson Mandela Hall at the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday. Over 12,000 attended the event in person and virtually, including government officials, diplomats and youth leaders.
