2025 Utah construction season begins — here's what projects are in store
SALT LAKE CITY () — You may be seeing more cones on the road soon as construction season kicks off. The Utah Department of Transportation will be focusing on 152 new construction projects, worth $1.68 billion, as well as an additional 145 continuing projects.
These include repaving highways and creating new interchanges and bridges, as well as measures for better pedestrian access, such as building trails and improving transit options.
Utah union leaders gather more than double the required amount of signatures in referendum process
Rob Wight, UDOT Region I director, said that these projects have been years in the making, with lots of coordination between cities, counties, and planning organizations.
'Our partners with our consultants, engineers, and our great folks and our employees here at UDOT, have spent a lot of time putting this together before you actually even see construction going on out here on the road,' said Wight.
UDOT says to remember as crews are working to improve the state's transportation, drivers should plan for potential delays, and remember to slow down and be safe in work zones.
'Every day, Utahns are out driving to work, picking up kids, heading to the mountains or just getting where they need to go,' UDOT Deputy Director Lisa Wilson said. 'Our job is to make sure those trips are as safe and smooth as possible. These projects might cause some short-term delays, but in the long run, they'll mean better roads, less congestion and a safer and more reliable way to get around — no matter how you travel.'
1800 North and I-15 intersection: Davis County – $385 million
'This project will build a new interchange at the intersection of 1800 North and I-15 in Clearfield. Additionally, to accommodate current and future travel in the area, 1800 North will be widened up to 2000 West, an overpass at 500 West to cross the railroad will be added and other measures are planned to create space for a future Hill Air Force Base entrance gate. Work began in March and is expected to finish in fall of 2027.'
I-84 bridges in Weber Canyon: Morgan County – $52 million
'UDOT will replace two I-84 bridges over the Weber River and Union Pacific Railroad just west of the Weber Canyon rest area. First, a new eastbound bridge will be constructed immediately to the south of the existing bridges. Once complete, the new eastbound bridge will accommodate all traffic while the existing structures are removed, and the westbound bridge is constructed. The project is underway and is anticipated to take two years to complete.'
I-215 from SR-201 to North Temple: Salt Lake County – $190 million
'Crews will repave three miles of I-215 and 14 miles worth of ramps on SR-201, I-80 and California Avenue. In addition to repaving, 22 bridges will be repaved, a new drainage system will be installed and pavement will be preserved for the next 15 years. This project is expected to start this summer and is anticipated to take two years to complete.'
I-80 from SR-36 to SR-201 and SR-36 from Stansbury Parkway to I-80: Tooele County – $38.4 million
'UDOT will widen this growing corridor and add an auxiliary lane on eastbound I-80 from SR-36 to the SR-201 on-ramp. Additionally, a northbound lane on SR-36 from Stansbury Park to the I-80 eastbound on-ramp will be added. Work is underway and will continue through summer of 2026.'
Geneva Road from University Parkway to 1800 South: Utah County – $34.4 million
'Crews will widen the road to two lanes in each direction and create a center turn lane. Additionally, this project will add bike lanes, a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the east side of the project area and a sidewalk on the west side. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer and conclude in fall of 2026.'
US-189 from Wallsburg to Charleston: Wasatch County – $53.1 million
'This project in Provo Canyon will widen US-189 to two lanes in each direction, create a signalized intersection at US-189 and SR-113 and enhance the Island Beach Day Use Area entrance. Wildlife protection measures will also be part of this project. Construction is expected to begin later this summer and wrap in late winter of 2026.'
US-6 from Chicken Hollow to Tie Fork: Utah County – $59.9 million
'Crews will widen US-6 from two lanes to four lanes – with acceleration and deceleration lanes at the Sheep Creek intersection – and add a center median. Additionally, drainage in the area will be improved to accommodate recent issues. Construction is expected to start this fall and last approximately two years.'
US-191, north of Summit: Duchesne County – $30.75 million
'UDOT will add a two-mile-long passing lane and increase the number of shoulder and chain-up areas. Crews will also add a variety of safety measures, including drainage improvements and guardrail and fencing additions. Construction is scheduled to begin April 21 underway and expected to wrap by the end of next year.'
I-15 from Kanarraville to South Cedar interchange: Iron County – $90.3 million
'This project will create a 13-mile-long northbound climbing lane on I-15 from the Kanarraville rest stop to the South Cedar interchange. Additionally, the project will widen I-15 to three northbound lanes, tying in an existing three lane section constructed in 2020. The project will also reconstruct the northbound side of the Hamilton Fork interchange to improve clearance and construct a roundabout on the east side of I-15, next to Exit 51. Construction is anticipated to begin in May and is expected to conclude by December 2026.'
5600 South in Roy and Riverdale: Weber County – $361 million
'This year, the 5600 South Improved Mobility project will begin phase three of its construction. This includes construction on the middle and side of I-15, as well as the reconstruction of 5600 South. Construction is expected to last through the summer of 2026.'
Bangerter Highway interchanges: Salt Lake County – $415.3 million
'For more than a decade, UDOT has been working to eliminate stoplights on Bangerter Highway by converting intersections into interchanges. UDOT is currently building our new interchanges at 9800 South, 13400 South, 2700 West and 4700 South, with completion expected by the end of the year.'

'Led and funded by UTA, UDOT will begin major construction of UTA's third bus rapid transit (BRT) route. This brand-new, seven-mile route will have 15 stations and provide a valuable connection to UTA commuter rail and light rails. The construction of this all-electric line will also include the creation of 1.4 miles of bus-only lanes and priority traffic signals to speed up the transportation of public transit users. Construction is expected to wrap in fall 2026.'
Mountain View Corridor: Utah County – $466 million

ROAD CLOSURE: I-80 to close overnight for concrete repairs
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A section of I-80 toward I-15 will be closed overnight for concrete repairs, according to the Utah Dept. of Transportation. The closure extends from the I-80 Eastbound ramp to Southbound I-15 in Salt Lake City. The closure is in place so new concrete can solidify before the road reopens, according to UDOT. The closure will last until 4 a.m. on Monday, June 30. Drivers will reportedly be diverted onto the I-15 Northbound ramp toward Ogden. 80% of the world is now within 1 stop of Salt Lake City thanks to its newest direct flight
A small cheer erupted at Gate A25 when a Delta Air Lines gate agent got onto the intercom to welcome passengers to the inaugural flight between Salt Lake City and Incheon, South Korea. Some passengers were still sifting through meal boxes set up in the corner, including a cookie featuring a logo to celebrate the occasion. A few were also taking photos with Delta's mascot, Widgey, which made an appearance. A louder cheer broke out moments later when representatives from Salt Lake City and Incheon international airports gathered to cut a ribbon that signaled the opening of this new daily route. The crowd then began eagerly boarding the fully booked Airbus A350-900, which lifted into the hazy blue sky at noon as it began its roughly 13-hour journey. While this was just one of several flights out of Salt Lake City International Airport that took place Thursday, this new service is major in linking Utah's capital city with the world. It also has importance beyond passenger travel. This flight marked Salt Lake City's first direct flight to Asia in 15 years, eliminating the need for Utahns to fly to another U.S. city before flying to Asia. That means about 80% of the world is now accessible within one stop of the city, said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, speaking at a celebration of the new route earlier in the day. It makes it easier for Utahns to travel to Asia, and for South Koreans and residents of other Asian countries to visit Utah. 'This is a monumental step forward … and my invitation to Salt Lakers is to start looking out for more visitors from Asia, and welcome them with open arms,' Mendenhall said. What helps is that Incheon International Airport, which is located less than 20 miles from South Korea's capital of Seoul, is also a key hub for Korean Airlines, which coordinates frequently with Delta. That means passengers flying in from Utah can quickly connect to other major Asian cities. At the same time, it now connects Incheon with all four of Delta's key U.S. hubs, said Daniel Dongik Shin, executive director of the Hub Strategy Group, which oversees Incheon International Airport expansion. 'This new service is more than just an additional route; it is the opening of a new air corridor connecting the U.S. and Northeast Asia,' he said. The Airbus can seat over 300 passengers, much more than most flights in and out of Salt Lake City, which speaks to the benefit of the city's new airport. The old facility could fit similarly-sized planes, but it was a logistical nightmare. Airlines needed to use three gates just to accommodate its size, which took away from other potential flights in and out of the facility, which is why airlines were hesitant to bring nonstop flights of Incheon size to Utah, Wyatt explained. 'This one would have been extremely difficult to service in the old airport, and now we can line up six of them on the other side,' he told The plane's wider belly means more than just passenger travel, too. It has enough space that it will be easier for businesses to transport cargo between Salt Lake City and South Korea, Wyatt points out. The new service helps cut travel time for pieces of the state's supply chain. Utah exports can end up in South Korea, while items manufactured in South Korea — home to Samsung, LG Electronics, Hyundai and other big global brands — can be imported into Utah faster. Salt Lake City and Utah Inland Port Authority officials are expected to travel to South Korea later this year to bolster these new trade opportunities. It's unclear if the new service to Incheon will open the door for more nonstop flights to Asia, but Wyatt says he does see more international flights in Salt Lake City's future as it is linked even more closely with the world now. 'I see more Europe; I can see more South and Central America, and now we have the facilities to do it, which had always been a constraint here,' he said.

UDOT announces road and lane closures in Davis, Tooele County
SALT LAKE CITY () — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced road closures on I-15 in Davis County and lane closures on northbound SR-36 and eastbound I-80 in Tooele County. Here's what you need to know to plan your commutes and travel. I-15 in Davis County is going to close for two Saturdays overnight in order to demolish the Shepard Lane bridge. Drivers will be detoured to U.S. Route 89 and Main Street in Kaysville during the closures. SR-36 in Tooele will see weekday lane closures beginning on June 16 and continuing through the summer of 2026. There will be nighttime work as needed, and I-80 lane widths will be reduced during construction. For information updates, visit the or download the UDOT traffic app. This weekend, on Saturday, June 14, southbound I-15 between 200 North and Park Lane will close between 9:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. on June 15. Next weekend, on Saturday, June 21, northbound 1-15 between 200 North and Park Lane will close between 9:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. on June 22. UDOT said that these closures are to create a safe work zone for crews to demolish the Shepard Lane Bridge, which closed permanently in May. These closures are part of a project to build a new interchange at Shepard Lane in Farmington 'to reduce congestion and enhance safety in the area,' according to UDOT. The interchange will create another connection to local roads by crossing over the Union Pacific Railroad and UTA tracks, and it will improve pedestrian and bike connectivity. The new interchange is expected to open in late 2026. Beginning June 16, lanes on NB SR-36 will close on weekdays, continuing through the summer of 2026, and I-80 lane widths will be reduced during construction. The is intended to improve mobility and reduce congestion on SR-36 in Tooele. It will widen SR-36 to three lanes between I-80 and Stansbury Park in addition to adding an auxiliary lane on EB I-80. The auxiliary lane will be added between the SR-36 on-ramp and the State Route 201 exit. As part of the project, UDOT has been working to widen southbound SR-36 between Sunset Road and Stansbury Parkway, which is expected to be finished this summer. UDOT also shared some traffic impacts in Salt Lake County on Interstate 80. Eastbound lanes and ramps on I-80 in Parley's Canyon will be closed at exits 132-134 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for paving through June 14. Lambs Canyon (exit 137) and heading westbound is the alternate route. Detours are posted. I-80 Eastbound between 5600 W and Wright Brothers Drive in Salt Lake City will be reduced to one lane each night this week to repair bridge beams. Lane closures last from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. until June 16.
