Opinion - To short-circuit the higher education AI apocalypse, we must embrace generative AI
The rapid improvement of generative AI tools has led many of my peers to proclaim that higher education as we know it has come to a crashing and shocking end. I agree.
In my large-enrollment general education course at the University of Florida, I can no longer assign an essay asking students to state their views on genetic engineering and assume the responses I receive are written by humans. So the critical question we must ask as academics is, 'What do we do now?'
Rather than try to create assignments that AI cannot tackle, I propose we develop assignments that embrace AI text generation.
We don't want to ignore the 54 percent of students who use AI at least weekly in their course assignments, according to the Digital Education Council. We don't want to ban AI. And even when we, as educators, try to trick AI tools, newer versions of ChatGPT just come along to thwart that strategy.
With this in mind, I modified the final assignment in my course to require that students submit an entirely AI-generated first draft, which they then modified to reflect their own perspectives. In the first couple of semesters using this strategy, students color-coded the sources of text to mark which parts were human-generated and which were AI-generated. This strategy allowed students to use and reflect on how they would utilize AI in the future.
Tracking of text origin was further streamlined using the recently released 'Authorship' tool from Grammarly, which accurately attributes text as 'typed by a human' or 'copied from a source/AI-generated.' Advancements in technology have upended the careful development of assessments in higher education before and will continue to in the future, even if AI appears to be an all-encompassing, do-everything tool.
For those of us born in the 1970s, we remember a time before the ever-present calculator. Math teachers could assign long-division problems without worrying that students who came up with the correct answer did not understand the methods required to generate the answer.
More recently, language translation, a key learning tool in language acquisition, was upended over a few days in 2016 by the release of a new version of Google Translate. The rapid improvement in Google Translate bears similar parallels to how ChatGPT 3.5 burst into the consciousness of a large portion of the population in November 2022. In both cases, educators eventually embraced and used these new tools to improve student learning outcomes.
While requiring a GenAI first draft of an assignment is not a model that will work in all situations, 'showing the work' and student reflection can play key roles in student assessment. My twin high school seniors possess graphing calculators that are more powerful than the computer on which I wrote my dissertation. So I have observed firsthand how educators have modified assessments to adjust for such changes, emphasizing the processes needed to answer the assignment more than the final answer.
Language teachers have pivoted to incorporate student reflections on why one word was chosen over another, for example. In my course, Part B of the final assignment requires students to reflect on how well (or poorly) the initial AI draft reflected their views on the assigned topic.
I acknowledge that students with access to AI during the reflection portion of assignments could use the tool to show how they produced the 'work.' Tools that track AI usage, like the 'Authorship' tool, hold promise for providing both instructors and students with information on where and how much AI text was used in an assignment.
The capability of AI to generate text (and images) will keep advancing, becoming increasingly integrated into the daily lives of both us and our students. In our professional lives, it will be capable of responding to the most imaginative essay prompts educators can design.
By shifting the focus of assignments from pure content creation to critical engagement, analysis and editing, we will teach our students how to think creatively, collaborate and communicate their ideas effectively and responsibly. These are the same skills they need to master to successfully work in teams and communicate efficiently in their future careers.

Microsoft-Backed OpenAI (MSFT) Has Reached $10B in Annual Recurring Revenue
Microsoft-backed AI company OpenAI has reached $10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) less than three years after launching its popular ChatGPT chatbot. This total includes sales from its consumer products, ChatGPT business services, and its API, but does not include licensing revenue from Microsoft (MSFT) or large one-time deals, according to an OpenAI spokesperson. Interestingly, this amount jumped from about $5.5 billion in ARR last year. However, its rapid growth has come at a cost, as OpenAI lost around $5 billion last year to support its expansion. Confident Investing Starts Here: Nevertheless, OpenAI is aiming for even bigger targets. Indeed, the company is reportedly looking to reach $125 billion in revenue by 2029, according to a person familiar with the plans, which was first reported by The Information. In addition, earlier this year, OpenAI closed a $40 billion funding round that turned out to be the largest private tech deal on record and valued the company at $300 billion. As a result, based on today's revenue, OpenAI is currently valued at about 30 times sales. This highlights the huge expectations that investors have of the company. It is worth noting that OpenAI first launched ChatGPT for consumers in late 2022 and added business products the following year, with adoption growing quickly. By late March, the firm said that it had 500 million weekly active users. Moreover, earlier this month, OpenAI reported that it now has 3 million paying business users, which was an increase from 2 million in February. These strong user numbers are helping drive OpenAI's fast revenue growth as it continues to expand its AI products for both consumers and businesses. Is MSFT Stock a Buy? Although you cannot directly invest in OpenAI, you can buy shares of Microsoft, which has a 49% stake in OpenAI. And according to analysts, Microsoft stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating among 36 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 31 Buys and five Holds assigned in the last three months. Furthermore, the average MSFT price target of $514.93 implies 9% upside potential.

Terry Savage: AI used to guide seniors to Medicare programs
Does the concept of artificial intelligence intimidate you? Or do you figure it won't have much impact on your life, so why bother learning about it? Well, AI is definitely entering — and improving — your life, whether you choose it or not. When I first wrote about ChatGPT several years ago, AI was viewed as a powerful tool to collect information from huge databases and sort it out to provide answers to questions. Since then, AI has quickly morphed into a useful tool for business and individuals, creating accurate and life-like interactions that make outcomes easier. For example, the new Social Security commissioner, a former tech payments CEO, has announced that Social Security will soon be using AI in its call centers. If the idea of talking to a 'robot' sends chills down your spine, think again. In this column, I'll show you a company that is already using AI in its call center — and generating responses that truly make you think you're talking to a helpful person. A reality check It's a generational thing. When I want help after calling a toll-free number for product information or credit card adjustments or insurance issues, I want to talk to an intelligent human being. I guess there aren't enough to go around! One of my pet peeves is being transferred to a voice messaging system that tries to 'help' me decide how to get answers to a simple question. They offer five choices, none of which is helpful. Representative, please! The only thing worse than a voice-activated decision tree is getting transferred to a live person who just happens to live in a foreign country and who is obviously responding off a script. If I ask to talk to a supervisor, I'm told there is no supervisor available! Don't these companies care about their customers? (Insert your own swear word here!) Artificial intelligence that's real So I must say I was absolutely shocked to hear a demonstration of AI being used by eHealth to start the process of guiding seniors to the appropriate choices for Medicare programs. For many years, eHealth has been a popular health insurance marketplace that helps people find the right insurance coverage by comparison-shopping plans from more than 180 insurers for coverage ranging from Medicare Advantage and supplemental plans to individual and family health policies, along with other benefits such as dental and vision. Many people access eHealth through its website, Others use their toll-free number 1-800-EHEALTH (1-800-343-2584) to reach their licensed and helpful insurance agents. Getting to the agent licensed in your state of residence, and knowledgeable about your specific product request, could take a lot of time during busy days around Medicare enrollment. And what about calls that come in late at night? That's why eHealth created 'Alice' — an AI 'agent' who does not actually sell insurance policies but who asks relevant questions to direct you to the correct licensed agent. You'd swear that you are talking to a live person, since 'her' responses are not only appropriate but friendly. Listening to the demo that eHealth sent me, I was absolutely blown away. I knew that you'd want to hear the same thing, so if you are reading this column online at my website you can click on this link in the article. In this case, an audio demo is worth a thousand words! Even if you're not shopping for health insurance, I recommend listening to this short clip of an interaction between someone calling the toll-free line late at night and the AI agent, Alice. This company has taken AI to the next level. Suddenly, you'll understand how much more helpful an AI agent can be than a call center in the middle of nowhere! And, on a personal level, you'll see how AI has so much potential to change our lives for the better (yes, or for the worse). I spoke with Ketan Babaria, chief digital and AI officer of eHealth. He notes that while AI is not (yet) selling policies, it is making a big difference in their processes: 'Our new AI agents are trained to be patient, caring and sympathetic. As a result, we are making it easier and faster for people to start the shopping process for a Medicare plan, enabling them to more quickly connect with a licensed agent who can help them comparison shop for the right health coverage.' So the next time you hear that your call will be answered by AI, don't hang up in fear, hoping that the next time you'll get a 'real person.' Odds are that soon you'll be connecting with many AI agents. And the odds are even better that you'll get the correct answer from a compassionate robot than you'd get from the overworked and underinformed call center worker. That's The Savage Truth.
