4 Lake Mead trails close as summer heat sets in

Yahoo21-05-2025

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Four popular trails at Lake Mead closed today as temperatures climbed ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
The Goldstrike, Arizona Hot Springs, White Rock and Liberty Bell Arch trails are now off-limits for hikers, a regular seasonal closure for the safety of people out for recreation.
'The annual closures during the summer season are due to extreme heat and remoteness as air temperatures can exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius). There is little to no cell service to call for help and it can take rescue teams hours to reach some locations,' according to a social media post from Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
On April 9, a hiker died on the Arizona Hot Springs Trail, and officials suspected it was heat-related. A day later, officials shut down that trail, along with the Goldstrike trail as rangers helped 28 hikers, including 25 children with special needs. The trails reopened less than a week later.
The forecast high for Willow Beach on Wednesday is 97 degrees, with temperatures Thursday expected to reach 101 degrees.
As the seasonal closure arrives, officials remind the public to be prepared if they go out in the heat for recreation. They cited hundreds of rescues on these trails in recent years.
The closures are meant to keep people safe and to allow rangers to focus on other duties.
The trails will reopen in early fall when forecasts for the high temperature at Willow Beach come down to 92 degrees, according to the social media post.

Early summer heatwave settles in with a few afternoon thunderstorms

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) – Happy Monday, Utah! It's shaping up to be a hot start to the week across Utah and as high pressure settles in overhead. Temperatures are already running above normal, and you can expect things to heat up even more heading into midweek. We're talking sunshine, very warm afternoons, and that classic summer feel…especially across northern Utah where temps will rise a few more degrees today. Daytime highs will climb to around 90 degrees along the Wasatch Front, and triple-digit heat for St. George. That said, it's not completely dry out there. There's still some lingering moisture hanging around, and that means we can't rule out a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms, especially over the higher terrain. These storms won't be widespread, but they'll be the kind that bubble up with daytime heating, toss out a few gusty outflow winds, and then fizzle once the sun starts to dip. By midweek, the ridge remains in control, but a weak low nearby could stir up a bit more action in the skies. Look for another round of high-based storms that might stretch beyond the mountains and drift into the surrounding valleys late Tuesday and Wednesday. Again, they won't bring much rain…but they could kick up some wind. Looking beyond midweek, things really dry out. A broader pattern shift will usher in hot and breezy southwesterly flow across the region, especially from Thursday into the weekend. That means we'll need to keep a close watch on fire danger—conditions are looking ripe for critical fire weather, especially in central and southern Utah. We'll keep you posted on the latest updates in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
