I'm fed up with annoying weeds ruining my patio so tried 3 viral hacks to get rid of them – a FREE trick worked a treat

The Irish Sun02-05-2025

WITH the warm weather taking hold, it's more than a little tempting to dust off the barbecue and get the burgers cooking.
But one thing that puts me off having a garden gathering is the state of my patio - with the weeds invading the cracks between every paving slab.

I'm definitely no gardener, but the hacks were easy enough for even me to give a go

And while there are countless products on the market claiming to get rid of the pesky plants, they're usually packed full of chemicals - and can be pricey too.
So I decided to try three different hacks to see if any of them worked to kill the patio weeds once and for all.
Vinegar victory?
First off, white vinegar.
While it has long been used for cleaning purposes, it seems to have become increasingly popular over the past year.

From getting rid of limescale to removing marks from windows, there are few things the liquid apparently can't do.

White vinegar is commonly used for a variety of cleaning purposes - and apparently works as a weedkiller

But I wasn't very impressed with the results - as it looked much the same as when I started

And apparently, white vinegar can also be used to get rid of weeds, thanks to the fact it contains acetic acid, which acts as a "contact herbicide".

"The acid within vinegar breaks down cell walls and removes moisture from weeds, causing them to die off," Rebecca Sears, chief marketing officer at Green Garden,
"Vinegars that you keep in your kitchen, such as white vinegar, contain a level of acidity that can help remove weeds."

So, I splashed out on a huge jug of vinegar from Amazon - figuring that I can use it for a variety of other cleaning chores if it didn't work to kill weeds.
To make the weed killing concoction, I used 75% of white vinegar with 25% water, and put a generous helping of table salt in there too.

I then put it into an empty spray bottle, and gave the weeds a generous soaking.
Once that was done, I left the weeds for a week, to see whether or not white vinegar would answer my gardening prayers.
The result? Well... not very successful, in all honesty.
The weeds looked pretty much the same as when I started - with only a few of them starting to look brown around the edges.

Verdict: 1/5
Maybe this would work better if you were to use it on a daily basis, but as a one-off, it's not particularly effective.
Keep pests out all summer
Hornets and wasps - hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.
Moths - acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.
Flying ants - herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.
Mosquitoes - plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mossies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.
Shake it off
Next on my list to try out was salt.
Another cupboard staple that people turn to for other cleaning purposes, such as removing sticky spots from irons or keeping your coloured clothes nice and bright.

On the slab I'd used salt on, the weeds had started to brown

But this time, I was using it in the garden.

This means the plant will then dry out and die.

Salt also adds toxic mineral ions to the soil, replacing calcium, magnesium and potassium - the minerals the plant needs to survive - with sodium, which is toxic to the greenery.
I took 200g of table salt and dissolved it in one litre of water, adding a splash of white vinegar for good measure.
You can use warm water for this, as a higher temperature of water will help the salt dissolve faster.
I then poured this solution over the top of the weeds, and waited for a week.

Once again, the weeds had started to brown - slightly faster than the ones on the vinegar tile - but not particularly noticeably.
Verdict: 2/5
Works better than the white vinegar but still not very effective.
Wat-er hack
One of the most popular hacks to use on weeds is boiling water.

And the reason this is so popular is that it's completely free.

Boiling water is another, completely free, hack that a lot of people swear by

7
And for my patio it was clearly the most effective - with the weeds I'd poured the water on brown and pretty much dead

It works by causing "immediate and irreversible damage to the plant's cells", and is most effective on young weeds that have just made an appearance.

This is because it works by killing the roots - and those weeds that have really taken hold have thick roots, that won't be affected by the water.
However, gardening writer Simon Akeroyd explained on Instagram that it's still worth trying out the water hack.
"If it does manage to come back again it will be much weaker, and a quick second or third dose with boiling water will finish it off,"
Simply boil the kettle, and pour the water straight over the weeds.

But be careful when doing so - especially if you're wearing sandals - as the water could splash up on your feet.
Out of the three hacks I tried, I wasn't holding out much hope for the water.
But much to my surprise, it ended up being the most effective.
While I left the tiles the same amount of time before checking the results, the weeds I hit with water were noticeably browner than the other two.

Verdict: 4/5
The most effective of all three hacks, and the cheapest. What's not to love?

China Out of Contention for World Cup after 1-0 Loss to Indonesia

China was eliminated from 2026 World Cup qualification Thursday after a 1-0 loss to Indonesia in Jakarta. A first-half penalty from Ole Romeny was enough to keep China, whose sole appearance was in 2002, last in Group C with just one game remaining. Indonesia, coached by Patrick Kluivert, took the lead just before the break when Romeny converted from the penalty spot. Elsewhere in the group, a last-minute goal from Aziz Behich gave Australia a 1-0 win over Japan in Perth to put the Socceroos within touching distance of a sixth straight World Cup appearance. Australia can qualify for its sixth successive World Cup later Thursday if Saudi Arabia, next week's final group opponent, fails to win in Bahrain. The already-qualified Japan fielded an experimental XI with only Daichi Kamada and Koki Machida having made more than four international appearances, but still had the majority of possession and chances. Substitute Takefusa Kubo had perhaps the best opportunity with 10 minutes remaining, but the midfielder shot wide of the post from inside the area. In the 90th minute, Riley McGree broke free down the right and pulled back for Behich to curl home to bring Perth Stadium to its feet and give Australia its first win over Japan in 16 years. 'It hasn't sunk in just yet but when the final whistle went it was a great feeling,' Behich said. 'It was a tough game and we had to grind it out. It's been a long campaign and we have worked so hard.' The teams who finish third and fourth in the three groups in this third round of Asian qualifying will advance to a fourth stage to compete for the remaining two Asian places at the World Cup.

Sabalenka: Finally Conquering Paris Clay Would Mean the World to Me

Hardcourt specialist and world number one Aryna Sabalenka was told for years that claycourts were not her surface but on Thursday after reaching her first Roland Garros final she said that winning the French Open would mean the world to her. Sabalenka battled past four-times champion Iga Swiatek in three sets to a place in the showpiece match on clay, Reuters reported. Her collection of three Grand Slam titles comprises back-to-back Australian Open crowns in 2023 and 2024 plus the US Open title last year. Both of those Grand Slam tournaments are played on hardcourts that suit the Belarusian's power game perfectly. "Well, it's going to mean everything to me and my team, because I have to say that almost like (my) whole life I've been told that it (clay surface) is not my thing and then I didn't have any confidence," she told a press conference. "In the past, I don't know how many years, we've been able to develop my game so much, so I feel really comfortable on this surface and actually enjoy playing on clay." Sabalenka, who had reached the last four in Paris only once before -- in 2023 -- powered through the third set and won 19 of the last 21 points to subdue her opponent 7-6(1) 4-6 6-0 and set up her biggest career final on clay. She will face world number two Coco Gauff, who eased past French wildcard Lois Boisson in straight sets. The American, a semi-finalist last year, also reached the final in 2022. "I have to say that for the clay I got better, much better physically," Sabalenka said. "I think it's really important on clay to be physically strong and ready to work for each point. "If I'll be able to get this trophy, it's just going to mean the world for us," she said.

Eurasian Development Bank Reveals Partnerships with the Gulf to Develop Energy Projects

Chairman of the Management Board at the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) Nikolai Podguzov revealed plans to cooperate with GCC countries, including Saudi Arabia, to develop energy infrastructure. Podguzov told Asharq Al-Awsat that the bank, which is the international financial organization that operates in Central Asia and in Eurasia, works on implementing a working plan based on three strategies. 'Every year we execute around 30-40 new projects and set up agreements,' he said. 'The investments of the bank are growing at least 20% each year,' Podguzov revealed. 'We are quite a fast developing bank. Uzbekistan has just joined the bank this year.' Regarding the size of loans and investments handled by EDB, Podguzov explained that the bank's average investment ranges between $100 million and $400 million. He added however, that the bank is capable of syndicating larger loans that can reach up to $1 billion or more, while the average annual investment volume is around $2.53 billion. Regarding the bank's work plans for the coming year, Podguzov explained that the Eurasian Development Bank is simultaneously working to strengthen its relations with the GCC countries and the Islamic Development Bank. 'We improve connectivity, transport infrastructure and logistics. We improve access to water for regions in Central Asia. We develop energy infrastructure in our member states,' he told Asharq Al-Awsat. 'We take care of food safety and food safety infrastructure, which provides access to food and provides food security for our member states. And I think in this field we can set up very good economic ties and cooperation between GCC countries and Central Asia.' 'I know that such countries like Saudi Arabia, Emirates, Oman are quite interested in the topics of our strategy,' he said. 'We mainly do non-sovereign finance ... which is very convenient for our potential partners,' he added. Podguzov said there is a partnership with Masdar which 'is a world leader in bringing renewable energy technologies into the world. They are quite active in Central Asia, in Kazakhstan in particular.' 'That is why, for example, we are very much interested in cooperation with Masdar company. This is one of examples. I think logistics and logistics project also could be of interest for Saudi Arabia. A lot of infrastructure could be developed together with the help of Eurasian Development Bank.' 'I believe that it's also very important to build economic bridge between GCC countries and Central Asia. And I think the bank can do a lot in this field and finally we can bring together economic interests of Central Asian and GCC countries.'
